ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. ANDREW MANZE!! Bravo! And the NDR!

I've heard many, many performances of this piece, going back to the 70s. I've even seen it live. The overall sound quality he's getting here, along with the microscopic cleanliness of the performance, are truly unbelievable!! And with such a casual physical setup, even. I'm definitely going to follow this conductor.

Almost everything to be said about this wonderful performance has been said already, but I must comment on the way Andrew Manze's facial expressions show how he is 'living' the music - what a fabulous conductor.

What a fabulous performance with such sound quality and sensuous expression. The NDRRP under Manze, has truly achieved something very special here!

A superb German orchestra on top form under an English conductor as well known for his scholarship as his inspired conducting. WOW!

Along with his second, Sir Edward Elgar wrote two of the finest symphonies ever composed. As a tremendous admirer of his works, I must say that although I have never heard of this orchestra, they have done themselves proud with this immaculate performance of Sir Edward's First Symphony. I own and have heard many renditions, including once in person; and this was one of the best I've listen to. My compliments to Maestro Manze, and NDR Radiophilharmonie. Bravo and thank you! Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der erste Satz klingt echt majestätisch und auch melodisch. Im Kontrast klingt der zweite Satz echt lebhaft und auch rhythmisch. Der dritte Satz klingt besonders schön und echt sehnsüchtig. Endlich kommt der letzte Satz mit der Erinnerung an den ersten Satz. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester in verschidenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

The finest German orchestra playing the finest English symphony. A memorable concert, indeed. While listening, I am wondering why the two most admirable countries fought so viciously, to life or death, twice in the the past century. If heat rises (ever) again, invite NDR orch to London and play an Elgar (or Vaughn Williams.) And, invite LSO (or like) to Berlin and play a Beethoven (or Bach, Brahms, ....) It might cool down the temperature.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I first discovered this symphony 44 years ago. 38:06 is one of the most gorgeous, most tender things I have ever heard, and the finale is nothing short of a blaze of glory. Elgar became my favorite composer years ago and I went to his birthplace and later to his grave to place a flower on his stone in gratitude for all the pleasure he has given me. I attended a performance of the Dream of Gerontius only 2 weeks after my mother passed. I wasn’t sure that I would get through it, but the sublime Angel’s Farewell was deeply consolatory

I believe Elgar himself would be entranced by taut and exciting performance. Bravo to both the composer and the conductor and orchestra. I shall listen to this again.

Andrew Manze is one of the best conductors of our time. In the field of old well known reference performances/recordings of classical music he is making his own mark and "becoming" Svetlanov, Karajan, Klemperer, Bernstein... in a sense where we, classical music fanatics and the musical market feeding our addiction, patiently wait for the new release of Manze's performance/s. To work in Germany, where level of musicianship of orchestras and competition in quality is without equal, is a plus for both maestro Manze and for the orchestra. Indeed this season for the NDR sounds like the beginning of a great friendship.

Outstanding - a truly wonderful performance

I agree with all the comments I have read! Andrew Manze is a fine conductor. And with the recent death of Andrew Davis I know that performances of English music are in good hands. Also, its great to see German orchestras and audiences appreciating Elgar. Ever since I listened to Daniel Barenboim playing Elgar with German orchestras I have realised that such musicians are every bit as good at playing English music as English orchestras. Better!

This is a revelation... is the secret to Elgar having his works rendered by non English orchestras and conductors? I am beginning to think so. The crispness, pitch and the phrasing of this elevates it to the pantheon of No. 1 recordings. Just astonishingly moving and magnificent throughout. The Edwardian Age... sigh.

Thanks for the upload. The most magnificent opening to the finest symphony ever written. It’s always good to hear Elgar played by a non British orchestra. The best performance of “In the South” I’ve ever heard was by the Polish Radio S.O.

Dear Andrew Manze - das ist die großartigste Interpretation dieser Symphonie, die ich bisher kenne! (Aber für die Tonqualität muss man auch der Technik danken!) Das Eingangs-Andante... ich finde keine Worte dafür. Es ist aus einem einzigen "Atem". Alles ist plastisch und durchsichtig, wo die Gefahr besteht zu "verschmieren" oder zusammenzuballen, auch in den durchführungsartigen Stellen, die harmonisch kompliziert sind. Dadurch erlebt man auch viel deutlicher, wie differenziert und farbig Elgar instrumentiert hat. Die Wiederkehr des Eingangsthemas an verschiedenen Stellen wird mir erst in dieser Aufführung richtig bewusst - es ist wie ein ein "edles Samt", das das Dramatische, Düstere oder Exstatische immer wieder in das den Frieden des As-Dur hüllt... Und ein wunderbares Orchester! Was für ein Violinsolo im ersten Satz... Danke!

This is a cracking performance! The audience are a bit frozen in their seats. I doubt that Handel or Mozart had the benefit of such dainty reverence. The NDR, along with the the WDR orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic (of course), the Berlin Radio symphony, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and so many other splendid and extraordinarily talent bands, prove the incomparable depth and richness of German musical culture. What a blessing for all of Europe, and indeed human civilisation across the globe! As long as geniuses write great symphonic works, and brilliant musicians interpret them to crowds of human hearts enraptured and transfigured and thereby given a vision of the divine before our very ears and souls, it can be said, with some confidence, that humanity has achieved something, and has some future. Quite a lot in fact! Organised and formalised and state-sponsored religions in Western Europe have largely faded, and we are being dangerously seduced by the falsehoods of possessive individualism, of mountains of techno-junk, and by the thinly disguised hell of AI and so called Virtual Reality - which is nothing but a masculine-boyish retreat into a neurotic, soporific and indeed narcotic fantasy. But our womanly humanity persists, and thus so do our better womanly capacities for kindness and tender regard and care, and for the electrifying warmth of mutual erotic surrender, and the adoration of each other with pure altruistic love, and above all our power to create and nurture new life. Likewise to cook and dine together (the essential and very Mediterranean art of la cucina), and sing and dance, and make supremely expressive music. And to keep learning more and more. These are the better aspects of our species, perhaps indeed our truest, and in an ironically mundane or commonplace way, the original route to our ceaseless grasping for the divine, to look into each others eyes for that beneficent face, for that shimmering aspect of the transcendentally generous and supremely good. This is a vision available to everywoman who loves, and embraces, and is enraptured by the "look of love" between her and her one or several girlfriends. England was once disparagingly regarded by their Teutonic cousins as “das land ohne musik”, until Elgar came along and made the latter eat their words like saumagen! I regard this performance as the very best of the whole lot of Elgar’s First I have ever heard, made possible only by having a superb orchestra, led by an equally superb conductor. What a moving and expansive slow movement which made me teary. Wunderbar. Danke. Incidentally, with the recent demise of Queen Elizabeth (and her lying-in-state at this very moment) how appropriate to hear this magnificent music of a very English composer who, not since Purcell, can be regarded the equal of any from the Continent!

Watching the conductor, one gets an impression that the orchestra gives an outstanding performance despite him. But, of course, this isn't true. While I didn't see a lot of evidence of performers casting frequent glances toward him, that only reflects excellent preparation in the rehearsals. More please.

So often the scherzo is rush and the marvellous semiquaver passages in the violins are blurred. This orchestra plays them with such panache and precision ... love hearing Germans playing Elgar.

さっきマンゼのエロイカ見たところ!! 今度はエルガー!! どうでも良いけどさっきバルビローリのエルガー交響曲第1番とモントゥーのエロイカを聞いたところ ICAのBBC LEGENDS BOX3が最近届いたので聞いてた 個人的にテンシュテットの録音の再発に大喜びして買ったんだけど エルガーの交響曲は初めて聞いたかも!!

Abit too careful, Elgar wanted more passion than this and the second movement is too slow.

Mahler never achieved this level.

Nothing but Hollywood movie music. Not art.
