Edward Furlong (The Terminator, American History X) joins us this week to share his journey with addiction and the rock-bottom he hit that allowed him to get clean and re-discover the joys of a sober life. Edward shares fond memories with cast and crew while filming The Terminator franchise - all the while, acknowledging how he took it for granted in his youth.
We also talked about going from teenage heartthrob to parent of a teenager, breaking the chain of generational trauma, and what Edward still wants to prove to himself.

A lot of people know Edward Furlong from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but American History X is just as epic of a film and performance. I'm glad Ed is still with us. I would have loved to have seen where his career went if drugs weren't such a destructive force in his life. I'm a recovering alcoholic. I know how destructive addiction can be.

My rockbottom was contemplating suicide and spending my last check on crack and heroin. Was injecting both in public and homeless. This episode made it very clear how genuine of a human he is. Addiction is Hell but he is a good dude. It's pretty easy to tell when an addict is still lying to themselves, when they are lying to others, and when they are genuinely trying to live an accountable life. He's not lying to himself, not lying to others, and is living an accountable life. Nobody is completely out of the woods with addiction but he's the real deal here. Really really happy to see him in such a good head space at this point in his life.

I have two parts of his story that cast a little bit of doubt for me, but maybe there is something at play that not quite as bad as self deception. When he heard the knock on the door and (for some odd reason) they magically were asked to move rooms. I’m going to say that’s at least 80%+ probability that they had something to do with that. And I’m going to say that the next incident (cop just randomly busting his girlfriends balls and asking if she had drug on her, followed by both of them getting arrested) is about 95% likely that there was nothing random at all about that event and they were both at fault there as well. Why he’s still pretending to be a victim as well as speak like a 12 year old is a warning sign that he isn’t rooted in reality completely and that’s always a major risk factor for relapsing. I hope he never uses again though.

Great interview! I’m recently sober but something that Edward said about it taking a long time to get sober totally resonates with me. I recently said to my (very sober, patient) husband, I thought once I’d decided to give up that would be it. But it has taken me 4 years to actually get to a point where I finally feel I’ve turned a corner. For some of us it takes many tries. For anyone still addicted, don’t give up hope. Admitting you are an addict is the first step of many, but the most important step. One day, the urge will go away if you keep trying and wanting better for yourself. 💜

Good for you. If you were into heroin there really is no going back now that fentanyl has COMPLETELY taken over. The fent is so bad in my area of West Coast USA that people who are addicted to fentanyl and who are trying to use methadone instead are having to take between 250-300 mgs of methadone daily, and that clinic is even routinely having to write over 300 mgs a day for many. That same clinic in 2012 when it was just heroin on the streets wouldn't give anybody over 120 mg a day unless they were terminally or had horrible chronic pain. To give some context 40 mg is enough to kill anybody who doesn't use opiates. Let that sink in.

I toured constantly being in a band since I was 17 and collapsed one night leaving a bar and almost died. I wasn't homeless or in a tent, I thought life was great. I didn't feel sick prior to that night it happened or even thought something was wrong. I almost lost my life and now am forever changed after losing most of my pancreas, I have to deal with the repercussions every day for the rest of my life now 36. Quitting any addiction is hard. My Grandma smoked from the age of 13 (1942) to the age of 60 (1989). She was about 2 packs a week throughout this time period. My cousin Tyler deserves all the credit in the world for getting her to quit because one night when us kids were real little he just said to our Grandma, "Grandma, cigarettes are bad for you and I love you and I don't want you to hurt yourself". And I remember this crystal clearly to this day, by God that saint of a woman put her cigarette out and she never smoked again. Not once. She never complained about withdrawals. She never made a big deal about it. She just did it. To me that is the greatest act of love I've ever witnessed in my life.

@BoboMcBooboy
@BoboMcBooboy Месяц назад
@@jaredmartin7040there's a happy middle ground. If youve done crimes that require jail time, because they're serious enough, you absolutely should be put in jail imo. However, if the root cause of your stealing for example, is to fund your addiction, then let's work on treating the addiction WHILE you're in prison as best we can. If the crime itself IS the using/acquiring of drugs, and you're a non violent offender, no, jail time is absolutely ridiculous. The fact we still have people in jail for pot in the US is absolutely disgusting.
@BoboMcBooboy
@BoboMcBooboy Месяц назад
Giving people criminal records because they use a substance that's different then the substance millions of people use around the world to 'get drunk daily" for example is just so beyond ridiculous. Imagine if there was almost zero illegal black market for drugs! Imagine if you could completely avoid the risk of getting drugs cut with dangerous crap! Accidentally getting crap with fentanyl in it... Imagine if you could get you legal "upper or downer or psych high" dose controlled accordingly from a medical professional, and was taxed accordingly, instead of all the money we LOSE fighting a worse then pointless "war on drugs" for decadeS now...
@merrycaviller8145
@merrycaviller8145 Месяц назад
while your premise is agreeable, there comes a point in time where the line becomes blurred. while most non-organized criminal behavior is caused by people as a result of an addiction, most drug addicts don't wind up committing felonies as necessary outcome of their addiction. as a matter of fact, some of those who do escalate criminality might just be what 'snaps them out of it'. it's for these reasons that there must remain punishment for addicts who hurt people. addicted or not, they are still in there, and they have a choice, afterall

_THAT'S_ Edward Furlong? Holy cow! I think whenever studios hire young actors for huge movies they need to factor in the enormous pressure that can fall on their shoulders and have counselors work to prepare them for this and help guide them after the process fro several years. SO many young actors have spiraled out of control after becoming famous on TV or in movies. Some never recover.
