EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990) Movie Reaction - FIRST TIME WATCHING 

I am super excited to share this movie with you all! I absolutely LOVED this film even more than I thought I would to begin with. The snow dancing scene is pure cinema and I will fight anyone who says otherwise and the ending destroyed me to my core with the amount of emotion, both happy and sad, that it provided. This is such an emotional film Johnny Depp is outstanding, and the score is one of my favorites of all time So glad you liked it!

The reason Edward coming to this little suburb was such a hot topic among the women of the neighborhood was because nothing EVER HAPPENS in their empty little lives with their pastel cake frosting houses and their 1950s attitudes towards everything. Edward's appearance and presence in their neck of the woods basically through everyone for a loop, like a celebrity coming through. They treated him like a rock star...at first.

Glad you enjoyed this one. It was so weird to see Anthony Michael Hall play such a convincing bully. before this movie we had only really ever seen him play goofball characters. Edward Scissorhands is one of my favorite Tim Burton movies (and Danny Elfman's score is so, so good! This was one of the first soundtracks I ever bought. I think I had it on cassette tape, hahaha!)

Aside from anything else, this film was Vincent Price's final role. He was one of small group of Old Horror icons. So I kinda think of it as passing the torch. Since you're dong some older films, a new set of rabbit holes could be the films of Price, and perhaps of Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi etc. The work of that group goes all the way back to the 1930s or so. And a few of them who were still available... including Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing... show up in the Star Wars movies. Another example of tribute and passing the torch.

This is one of the few musical scores that I have never forgotten, hauntingly beautiful. Even after more than 30 years, it still resonates. Props to Danny Elfman for creating something like this. Over time, I have come to appreciate Burton's grasp of "the dark side" of a community, and the ability to convincingly portray it in film. This film starts off almost like a fairy tale, with a spooky house on a hill, an incomplete protagonist who lives alone and steps out into a wider world, the experience of his first love interest, etc. At first, it seems to set up the "happily ever after" ending, but the film cleverly subverts this. Initially, the community smiles and is curious about Edward, but as soon as he does not do what they want or expect, the community quickly turns against him. Initial acceptance changes into rejection and open hostility. As much as Edward and Kim want to be together, in the end they both know that is impossible: The community will never perceive Edward as anything else than different and dangerous. Instead of ending with a happily ever after, it ends tragically, with Edward permanently expelled from the community. People can be very fickle, initially accepting, then turning hostile the moment something goes wrong. A community can be accepting, but shift so easily into cruelty, and this film shows that all too well.

There are an elite group of movies where I just cannot escape from the overwhelming emotion of it. This is one of them. Glad you enjoyed it. This is absolutely undiluted Tim Burton though, make no mistake. You do need to watch "Mars Attacks!" though for the final, in my opinion, truly great Burton movie. At least that one won't make you cry, except from laughing!

37:46 Dude, the drug talk came out of nowhere. He gave him Scissorhands because that’s what the machines he had made previously had, they had different tools for hands and feet.

Tim Burton also directed the first 2 Batman movies in the 80’s/90’s which I highly recommend. I wish he had directed all of them since the others fell flat and got extremely cheesy. I mean there is a level of cheese to the original comic books to begin with, but Tim Burton did a MUCH better job of bringing the comic book Batman to life while making him a bit dark as well as cool. He left only a bit of cheese in there (just enough to make you smile) and it all blended together beautifully. He brought a fantasy comic book character to life! 🥰 So please react to “Batman” and “Batman Returns”. P.S. - “Batman Returns” is kind of a Christmas movie. ❄️😁

Dianne Wiest, who plays the mother, also gives an excellent performance in Parenthood (1989) - that's a comedy-drama that I think you would enjoy. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, and so many more.

I always thought that he was given scissors for hands to learn how to be careful and gentle. When he finally learned how to be a perfect gentleman he was going to be rewarded with functional human hands.

He didn't give Edward scossor hands. He made Edward from one of his machines. He started off with them. Though you could argue that he could have made the eggbeater hands robot a man instead.

That pastel colors and the exaggerated things in this movie of course were intentional. It was meant as we are seeing things from Edward's perspective. His innocent, childlike perspective and not being familiar with things. Tim Burton stated such in the special features of the DVD.

Definitely always considered this a Christmas movie. It’s so good and thoughtful. It’s Tim Burtons way of showing how it snows in a place where it shouldn’t every Christmas.

This just made me think about something. If all of you have seen Beetlejuice Cartoons think of Prince Vince. That alone was another honor to Edward Scissorhands in the BJ Cartoon.

Great reaction! The ending is poignant - exactly that! It’s the most potent kind of happiness/sadness - it’s a combination of the two most intense states of mind. Our hero lives on, yes forever free to be himself and live his life, yet he lives alone. Society has outcast him, yet he also loves what happy time he had with them and his creations paint the picture of him looking back on his times with happiness - the ice sculptures all being images of Kim dancing, the children playing on the lawns… for all the world has struggled against and pained him… the purity and love in his heart still wins. So yes, there’s a great tragedy in what happens in the plot, but in terms of the soul and the spirit it’s a story that in some magical way shows our hero’s spirit triumph. His love, his passion and his memories for the good times live on. Life is made up so much struggle and pain, but what matters is how we let ourselves let our love and joy for life be what makes us who we are in the end - it’s such a great story and life message. “The Grand Finale” track at the end is one of the most powerful musical cues from any film, whenever I hear it, it’s just this overwhelming sensation that comes over me… one of both great joy and sadness. It completely sums up all the words I just explained above but instead of words you just feel it all moving through you - happiness, beauty, sadness, childhood, loneliness, innocence, loss, memory. It’s such a perfect film!

Sleepy Hollow has been mentioned a couple times already here, but based on what you seem to appreciate in film, I feel like you might really adore it. It is absolutely charming, aesthetically beautiful, slightly frightening (as it should be!), surprisingly funny, and thoroughly entertaining in the sort of mystery-adventure of it all. Just a thrill, so fun, and doesn't get mentioned nearly enough in my opinion!

This was the last movie of one of my favorites, the great Vincent Price.

She's super nice in real life too; her personality is really like that, a bit less exaggerated though.

Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Batman, Batman Returns, and Big Fish are his absolute best movies.

I thought you'd like to know that...I'm typing up a script for an Edward Scissorhands sequel. It's called, "Edward Scissorhands 2: Edward's Special Love." In the script, Edward finally finds his true love in his new disabled and special friend, Jennifer Peterson, who moves to Suburbia after her mother's funeral, but is badly mistreated by the parents of her neighbors, as the result of her autism and Cerebral Palsy.

You would LOVE Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. It was Burton's first full length film as well as Danny Elfman's first film score. It is a CLASSIC.

Great reaction. You are over thinking the motivation of the creator and maybe a few other things. This movie is a beautiful melancholy modern fairytale. You can break it down as simple as folklore of where snow comes from in this town or you can also break it down in much more detail about society and the nuclear family and so on. This is Tim Burton at his peak. It's also Danny Elfman's masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

I should've put 2 and 2 together when I saw Beetlejuice Cartoon Creepy Cookies. That was an homage to this movie. :D

I won't say that it's his best, but this is definitely not Tim Burton's worst. This movie solidified what Tim Burton is all about, for better or for worse. Fun Fact: The houses used in the film were a real community in Florida, completely unchanged, except for their garish exterior paint. This also explains why there's no snow until Edward Scissorhands starts making ice-sculptures.

This was Vincent Price's last movie. Burton was a huge fan of Price.

To me, this movie is pretty decent but not a favourite of mine. However Danny Elfman's score is one of the finest I've ever heard and will always have a special place in my life. Couldn't agree more that the dancing scene is also the best moment of the whole film.

Edward's presence is "such a big deal" because in suburbia, petty people put a lot of effort into being just like everybody else. Anyone in the neighborhood who dares to be different must be gossiped about. It's all they have to do.

Saw this movie in theaters. I was 4 or 5.

You should check out Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) with Robert DeNiro as Frankenstein's monster. It's my favorite adaption. Edit: It has some dark moments oof!
