I was Edwins Tailor up until his passing in Nottingham UK ..2003...I travelled with him & the 'team' to all the gigs as 'wardrobe man' He lived a few doors down from me in Chilwell ,Nottingham.UK..There will never be a better soul\disco singer than Edwin....RIP big man ...keep the faith ✊thanks for this li'l reminder bro'...
I remember when this song came out (1970) - it is such a powerful song by such a powerful singer. It was one of the best anti-Viet Nam war songs of the period and its lyrics still ring true.
You can imagine how powerful this song was during the time of the Vietnam War, which is when it was released. Edwin Starr is one of my favourite artists, try My Weakness is You, great tune.
This is my all-time favorite song. I remember well when it first came out. We were in the Vietnam Police action by the way it was never declared a war. Our troops were treated so badly when they came home that people here spit on them. It was heartbreaking, and something I will NEVER FORGET.
Small Soldiers must be the movie you’re talking about. I don’t remember this song being in it, but “the internet” tells me it was. Loved that movie back then, by the way 🙂.
You don't understand young brother. When he made the song America was experiencing extremely turbulent times during the late 60s and early 70s. Vietnam going on. Riots were breaking out in Detroit, Los Angeles and other parts of the country. Martin Luther King was assassinated. And on and on. Artists were just expressing themselves about their frustration and anger.
He's right about the movie it had the gargonites who look like monsters but we're the good guys and the soldiers were the bad guys. The toys came to life.
I loved Small Soldiers! One of my favourite movies. We need more anti dualism songs like this. That keep it universal even if this was about Vietnam at the time. We need more songs... we still sell arms to Saudis, creating refugees.

Really enjoyed this I was lucky as I got My Mums record collection as she was a Mod in the 60s ;-) Edwin Starr is a fave saw him in 1989 at a Mod club ;-) give time by him a bop. All my love from the UK
