In 1988, then junior health minister Edwina Currie warned the British public that most of the egg production in the UK was affected by Salmonella.
The ramifications were colossal, causing egg sales to plummet.
Twenty-five years on, Edwina spoke to The Grocer's deputy fresh foods editor, Richard Ford, on Skype from her home, to talk about whether she had any regrets, what she thinks of the industry now...and how she likes her eggs.

Although Edwina Currie received bad publicity at the start of the salmonella outbreak, as time went on it was proven to be true and the industry eventually put their hands up and admitted she was right. But not all hope was lost, with her help the industry has worked to an astonishing degree to make eggs safer and well and truly back on the menu where they belong. Well done Edwina!!!
