My name is Jared Beckwith and I’m an EEG technologist. An EEG or electroencephalogram records the electrical activity in the brain and is best used to diagnose seizures. At my hospital our night shift people were sick, so I had to work a 12 hour day along with an 8 hour night to make sure the patients we’re monitored.

Thank you for all of your posts. Is it difficult to find open positions in this field? I live in the suburbs of NYC and only 2 jobs showed up withing 25 miles of me (which includes NYC). Thank you!

If you can show you know the basics of EEG and can measure a head correctly you should be able to find a job. The three main places that hire EEG techs are hospitals with epilepsy monitoring units, neurologist offices, and also remote monitoring opportunities once you’re good at seizure recognition. It’s starting to get good at reading EEGs with normal backgrounds, but struggles a lot on ICU records. Maybe within a decade all EEGs will be read by AI instead of humans. This won’t replace our jobs, it will just allow us to hookup and monitor more patients.

I’m starting at Laboure next month and I’m so nervous! I will definitely be watching your videos:) I believe that’s where you went right? I wanted to ask how you liked it and how challenging it was. I’m planning on working part time at my current job and am wondering if it will be too much too handle.

Hey thanks for reaching out and watching my videos! Don’t be nervous I can help you with any questions you have about EEG. I’d limit working part time to 20 hours a week because you’ll have to go to the hospital 2 days a week for clinical experience plus 2 online classes per semester. It’s totally manageable and will be worth it after you graduate (:

Is this a steady job all year around? Do EEGs mostly work nights?

Some of us do days, and some do nights. It’s a steady job if you work at a hospital. Working on a travel contract pays more money, but you’ll need a new contract every 3 months.

so during school, they didn’t focus on students learning to read eegs?

In the beginning they mostly focused on learning how to hook it up since the doctor is ultimately responsible to read the EEG. Near the end of school they went in-depth into how to read the EEGs. It’s still something that takes years of practice to build perfect pattern recognition.

@@jaredbeckwith hook up as in measurement/electrode placement/machine? how long was your program and did you practice w mannequin heads and real heads plenty of times before externship?

Program was a year long. Before going into the hospital, they made us learn all the electrode sites and have good measurements on a bald mannequin + one with hair after that.

Wow full circle , I’m in school for NDT and PSG and you ended your video right on cue regarding the necessity of good sleep hygiene. Get some rest. LOL
