Holy Land USA is a roadside attraction in Waterbury, Connecticut. Opened in 1955, the park features miniature replicas of biblical cities and locations as well as a large illuminated cross. In 1984 the park closed to the public and sat abandoned until recent years. Join me as I explore this eerie abandoned roadside attraction!

Strange place. Loved the opening shot with the sirens in the background.

Waterbury native here. A local lawyer named John Greco, a very devout Catholic, built Holy Land in the late 1950's. He had some help from volunteers but mostly built and maintained it himself. As he grew older he could do less work and the property started deteriorating. After John Greco died around 1990 the nuns who by then watched out for the property claimed that the money he had left for ongoing maintenance had been embezzled, who knows. Holy Land was locked up but continued to deteriorate. About ten years ago a civic group took control of it and has done so restorations as funds permit.

That's the name I was trying to think of, thanks. I'm not a Waterbury native but I've spent enough of my life there to feel like one. This place has been a legend for sure. I remember April of 08 I went to NY for two weeks, and when I returned I looked for the cross from the highway and it was gone! I hated the one that replaced it, that one is in a church parking lot on Thomaston Ave.

Too bad you didn’t stumble upon the catacombs. That was the craziest part of that hill. I haven’t been up there in years but I’ve spent a lot of time up there.

I remember when a guy took a life up there. She young and beautiful. I had to go to court the same day he was arraigned. To this day I remember him in his orange jumpsuit with shackles on his wrists and feet along at the waist. No one said a word. He was pure evil. He killed her and raped her. No good comes out of a place that is abandoned and dark never mind holy. Back in the day if you looked into those little buildings they had people in them. I visited in 1980 with my mom and it didn't look like this. Between vandalism and people misusing this wonderful place it has seen better days. There were water fountains and it was remarkable but of course people did such damage to it that it will never be the same. It's a shame too. I can't see how they can restore it now

I read about that, it was so horrible what happened. I had her in the back of my mind the whole time I was there and it made the place feel so sad

@@RayOutThere I can't believe you actually saw my comment let alone responded to it. Yes I had to go to court three days after her body was found and the police officers led him in and you could hear a pin drop it was that quite. I can't remember her name. I keep wanting to say Angela but it doesn't sound right. Waterbury has gone to crap. At one time it was a nicer place. I grew up in a small town called Wolcott which is the next town over and you never heard of people getting shot. I moved there briefly and someone was shot across the street from me and someone got stabbed in my driveway. It is a dangerous place to live. Thank you for taking the time to share and to respond to my comment

I've had an interest in the history and current state of this place for many years. The giant cross on the top of the hill is synonymous with Waterbury, and one of my first fascinations when my family moved to the area in the summer of 1991. I finally saw the park, originally called Pine Hill, 15 years ago after the cross was initially taken down and replaced by a smaller cross that looked like a giant pendant. After the tragic incident, the whole site was put up for sale, and purchased with the intent of restoring it to what it once was. In the 60's and 70's, people came from all over to see the place, and to pray. It closed down in the mid 80's when the owner and builder died, so it sat for about two decades uncared for, with nature and vandals destroying a massive labor of love and faith. I've been there a bunch of times, before the cleanup was done, and seeing it now is impressive. There's videos here of the place, just search Holy Land USA....
