There's one application I can see for directional audio cables: Star grounding. You can shield an audio cable by grounding ONE side, and there are some opinions whether it's best to ground on the source or sink side. Directional speaker cables though... I got nothin.

Dave, you nailed it with the control room matrix (ie, "monitor matrix"): it's basically a monitor switching box, with a few added features (you were also correct with the Talkback function, which is also usually built into mixing consoles.) Recording studios, especially ones that work with bands and musicians, will test mixes through several different types of monitors to ensure that the mix sounds good on a wide range of speaker types. It's not uncommon to see a large set of monitors that cost $5k _each_, alongside the cheapest, shittiest speakers available. Somewhat ironically, the "cheap and shitty" speakers are often most representative of what the vast majority of actual listeners will end up listening to the recording on! There are much nicer monitor matrix units available, but ultimately they're all just glorified speaker switchboxes.

You were right Dave. Wenger belongs to Victorinox. Wenger and Victorinox sold a lot of their pocket knifes at duty free shops at airports worldwide. After 9/11 small pocket knifes were forbidden and both companies lost a big portion of their sales volume (30% for Victorinox). Wenger went bankrupt and Victorinox could remain in the profit zone, but only just. Victorinox then bought the remains of Wenger and kept the brand and production site alive. In 2013 Victorinox announced that the brand Wenger will no longer be used for knifes. Instead they are now called Victorinox Delémont collection.

13:30 This is a bidirectional RF amplifier for cable TV and cable net (one wideband amp for downstream + cable TV, one narrow band amp for upstream, separated with directional coupler). One input (bidirectional, so it's an output also for the upstream), an output for the TV, and another output for the cable modem. The blue blobs at the F connectors are probably HV ceramic caps for DC decoupling, not PTCs (I'm watching it at 480p, so cannot read the values).

Hi Dave! Paul from QikTag. No worries about opening late, poor marketing sort of failed QikTag, although quite a few electronic companies have ordered them as a dynamic business card slash keychain. The original idea is that the owner can set what information is shown on the linked page. Sometimes you wouldn't want to show your cell number, on house keys certainly not your address (as someone mentioned in the comments). A PCB is great material for this due to its durability. Cheers!

Those hose clamps have been around for many decades and are generally intended for when removal without tools is required. I used to supply them in another life! Porton Down is the UK government and military scientific research establishment, for nuclear, weapons, electronics, biological, radiological, chemical etc. Probably the most secret place in the UK. A friend of mine works for a subcontractor that works there and despite his highest level security clearance, he still goes through the ringer every time he visits!

Nordost combats all of these losses by employing a “Micro Mono-Filament” dielectric alternative. This technique allows wire to increase its VP (Velocity Propagation) as much as 20%. The Mono-Filament is an extruded fluoropolymer string-type material, helically wound around each signal wire at a predetermined. I bet that booklet that went in the bin would have won a gobbledegook award.

But I gotta say that I'd find it hard to live without a good knife with a lockable blade.

My Samson C-Control has an issue with the LED bar lights staying on. A Control Room Matrix is to be able to switch from different input sources and select different output monitors so you can reference your mixes/masters. The "Speaker B" switch actually disables "Speaker A" when it is depressed so that you can only reference through one set of monitors or another. The Subwooder output is always active when selected. Quite a useful system.

The names are Chinese, they put the last name first and the first name last; therefore Song, is their last names. That is not called a "flathead"Screwdriver, but a slotted screwdriver, for use on slotted screws, which are NOT all flathead screws.
@nickguy6820
@nickguy6820 8 лет назад
A control room matrix is used to route line-level audio signals between various inputs and outputs. E.g., to route a mixing desk to alternate pairs of monitors (audio monitors, aka speakers); or switching between a computer audio system (recorded audio) and the main mixer outputs (live audio). This seems like a simple task, but something like this really makes life easier. A mixing engineer would have multiple speakers -- e.g., one or more pairs for technical listening, plus another one or more pairs to see what it sounds like on smaller (consumer) speakers, etc. Notice also the mono switch, to make sure the stereo material can be combined without excess phase cancellation. The Dim (or attenuate) switch is a partial mute -- the "what did you say?" button. This one also provides a handy talk-back mic and footswitch control so you can speak between sound-isolated control and performance rooms.

Still have and actively use my old TI-89, pre "titanium" model. Did the firmware update to 2004 version some years back, as I recall. Sure, you can get by with those 83s and such, but why bother with it if you don't have to? I think the 89 is one of the last ones you can still program in assembly for as it comes out of the box. Processor is the same as some of the early Macs and other such PC gear from back in the day, or a version of it.

Regarding the smart watch, the IC mounted on the display's flex cable is not an LCD controller; it's a capacitive touch controller -- this is super common construction found in many small form-factor displays. The LCD's electronics would be embedded close to the panel itself. Also, Song is a family name, not a first name. Family names are often written first in many Asian cultures.
@keeboudi
@keeboudi 8 лет назад
I think it is so Song may be the family name ... maybe they are related? And the Samson may be what is used in a recording studio for the headphone feeds to the musicians ... the talkbalk button + mic would be used to talk to them from the control room

Dave, I've always used the standard or medium size Swiss Army Knife. We have strict rules on knife carrying in Scotland so The Crocodile Dundee Knife is out of the question and in fact the large size Swiss Army if blade over 3" illegal to carry outside the home in Scotland. For me the Mini champ is too small but I would use it as a backup knife. My other main Knife is specially made to be UK legal and is American Made. I recently evaluated the Leatherman - I like the utility but the machining is a little bit crude vs the Swiss.

The plastic case of that splitter is the same style as Global Invacom's range of Loftboxes and other home RF distribution kit so I'd suspect they were the manufacturers. Edit: The reason for all the screening and filtering is the cable signal uses frequencies that would cause interference with radio using these frequencies if it got out.

The Samson unit is for controlling your studio monitor speaker(s) from your audio source. Theyre great for A/Bing the difference between several speaker desitnations. This is an analogue only unit obviously but where the real power comes in is of you have multiple sound cards and digital sources you can switch between those sources and speakers. I use my PreSonus Central Station for such tasks. The trick is getting one that doesn't colour the sound at all as this can greatly effect your sound design process and mastering of the audio. This one looks like it would be handy for a couple of PCs and a single set of speakers or just using headphones.

alu plate in the ti-83 could help the display to not break easily. i like the idea of a balanced calc which will improve fast drawing and speed up input in critical situations. but a stamped piece of steel would be much cheaper than a piece of alu which then is lightened again by drilling holes into it. so im thinking more stability than balance.

I'm not American, and I'm not in the US, I'm an Aussie working all around the world as an AV integrator. He used the term RCA plug. He was referring to the quarter inch jack as a phono input. Phono, is short for phonograph. Phonographs use RIAA preamps.

@nickguy6820 8 лет назад
Regardless, people still call RCAs "phono". Really common in Europe, for e.g. Argue all you'd like about the origin of the word, and whether it's appropriate. It's vernacular. Etymology seems to have little regard for literal accuracy. Maybe in the video he verbally mixed up 1/4" and RCA. Wouldn't surprise me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, there.
@TheBrightPixel
@TheBrightPixel 8 лет назад
I'm not arguing about anything. All I did was said, constructively, to a technical guy, on a technical and educational channel, that the term phono is technically incorrect. Which it is. Take it or leave it. Every comment after that was other people arguing.
