Yep, another J-500 hits the bench of D-lab. Reported erratic tuning. However, many more issues are surfacing. This transmitter had work performed on it several years back. The new owner purchased it with hopes of proper operation. Well, were not there yet. Over the years as these radios pass to new owners, maintenance & mods happen. When the radio fails, the poor tech at the other end has to sort out right from wrong. At some shops, if it doesn't agree with the schematic, repair efforts stop. As a remedy, I always try to return the radio to the stock design per the print. Some are to far gone and become hanger queens. So yes, you fall into the rabbit hole, as happened here. Many lost hours, sleep & increasing expense. Proverb. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Great video! Nice work, Terry. It’s always harder to troubleshoot something that’s already been messed up by someone else. The Johnson 500 is a beauty!

Great video, Terry. I've just received the initial parts order to get my 500 running for testing. I have worked on a few Rangers and Valiants, and have zero experience with the 500. Your videos are very helpful.

Nice fix, Terry, glad you got that identified and resolved. During my days of CB radio repairing, probably 40% of my work involved reworking modifications and "golden screwdriver" tune-ups, with about 10% being microphone replacements and rewiring. Putting things back as close as possible to stock, as you suggest, often resolved the customer's problems. Another 15~20% was reworking coax connectors and cabling issues! I hope the New Year goes well for you, Terry. Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year! I was about to point out that the low resistance could be due to the bias resistor. But luckily you discovered the issue. Also, the fan sounds crazy!! Hapy New Year!!

Well said Terry. I have bought numerous pieces of gear that were "Hamized" with modifications. Sadly no documentation on any of them either. Now anything I buy that "works" I consider a strip it to the chassis and rebuild per schematic set.

Looks like someone just assumed those were electrolytic 22 mfd capacitors, and upgraded the size to 33 mfd, when in fact they were paper capacitors that were 0.22 mfd with the outside foil band markings.
@zulumax1
@zulumax1 Год назад
If pin 7 is -45 volts the electrolytic capacitors were in backwards as well. Outside foil markings don't matter for polarity, just needs to be the low impedance side. (non electrolytics)
@bobblum5973

Replaced with the incorrect type and value seems likely! And I was wondering about the polarity myself, good catch.

Yes I agree, it may have been an oversight. The Mod section is heavily modified and does not work : ( that's next)

@@d-labelectronics I would be curious if that 300 ohm dc resistance is the capacitors themselves being shorted from being hooked backwards. Would be curious to see those capacitors tested for dc leakage. I do not have access to the full schematic on this unit, I could only pause the screen on the partial schematic you were showing. I do love these videos that make the brain strain. No matter how long you are in this hobby, something comes along that seems to defy logic and a person needs to step away. Love these kind of videos that the community learns together.

Yes Sir, I will measure the DC resistance again & see if there is a change. Now, I have no modulation, More mods!

I reversed engineered my SB 200 amp because the 572b tubes from China are very poor quality and now I have fitted GI6B pulse radar tubes and are much cheaper than 572B. It was a case either use it as a door stop or spend huge amount of money on a solid state amp. G4 LMZ happy new year.

More so than you at D-lab. I understand mods. when and when not to mod. correcting misguided mods is a problem. ALL mods are not misguided. it takes understanding of these things to decide. I agree with your method. when in doubt do not mod. ONLY if you know what you are doing should any mod be made. these things mostly work in original condition. even with the modulation distortion and splatter.
