Effective Body Punching - An Introduction

www.myboxingcoach.com - I have a real passion for great body punching. Body punching is the ultimate leveller. Well placed body punches can slow an opponent down and in many cases stop them in their tracks.
In this article I am going to provide you with a sound basis for understanding body punching and using body punching to best effect.
The article and video will break down into 3 sections:
- How to target body punches with precision
- How to land body punches at long range
- A final ‘wrap up’ to bring things together.
Being a great body puncher is not about hammering away wildly at the torso of the opponent.
Neither is great body punching about smashing shots at the ribs of the opponent. The rib-cage is a very tough structure of bone and sinew, a structure that is not very often hurt in a boxing ring because of the protection provided by the gloves.
It is crucial when using body punches that you focus precisely on very specific areas of the body.
By targeting the body of the opponent in the correct way will more often result in the right result for you and the wrong result for them.
Here are 5 points to guide you identifying the perfect target for your very cultured body punches:
Find the base of your sternum (with the catchy scientific of the ‘xiphoid process’.)
The width of 3 fingers below that point you will find the solar plexus. The solar plexus is a bunch of nerves that are very vulnerable to impact.
If your shot strikes lower than the solar plexus then the abdominal muscles are more likely to absorb the impact of the shot.
From the solar plexus, take the shape of an inverted ‘V’ down each side of the body beneath the lowermost rib.
This area is where you will find the liver, the spleen and a route inside the rib-cage to all of the other valuables. :-)
Angle the Body Punches
Having identified the best place to land your shot the next task is to deliver that body shot. And remember, this is not a tickling contest ( as Ricky Hatton once said), the shot is design to incapacitate your opponent…nothing less!
Aim to deliver the punch at an angle to ensure that the ‘shockwave’ of the body punch travels through as much of the mass of the body as possible.
Some really simple principles that should deliver immediate improvements in your body punching. The next step then is to look at nailing the opponent with long range body punches.

Some feedback. This is without doubt the best coach on RU-vid. A little light-hearted sense of humour here and there and the game is yours.

Whenever I take a good punch or kick to the liver, my interest in sparring seems to disappear and I wish I was doing a different sport, like croquet or lawn bowling....……..

It is possible to punch slightly downwards in a semi-crouched position without having to be off balance though, you would have to be leaning forward a lot to be off balance if you are angling the punch slightly downwards. It is actually a heavy shot if done well covered.

Fran - my approach for body hooks would be to try and land right on the very bottom edge of the rib cage ( the rib line ). If you don’t really “hug” the rib line, there is danger of going too low and glancing off the hip. If you hit on that rib line, you will also be impacting the soft tissue, due to the size of the fist or glove. Could you please comment? Thanks!

Good stuff, I'm fairly tall and lanky which makes body punches a risky situation (unless I'm the shorter opponent). What do you think Fran? Use fewer body shots as a taller fighter? Instinct tells me it's a golden opportunity for an incoming bombs as the shorter man might see an opening?
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach 7 лет назад
You could try with the jab William and see what reaction you get. Generally as long as you use speed there's no particular reason why not.
@richardlyons8422
@richardlyons8422 7 лет назад
You should watch some Gerald McCleanan. He was tall and a great body puncher. Teddy Atlas wreckoned taller fighter punched very hard because of the leverage of their long limbs.

I always found it tough bending my knees because of my long skinny legs... if I missed the shot, i felt like it took a lot out of me... though I do completely agree with you
@DerDude87
@DerDude87 6 лет назад
Then you probably have long arms as well, right? So for defense - as Fran suggests you could use straight body punches - you have a lot more options anyway!
@dfpguitar
@dfpguitar 5 лет назад
realise your comment was a year ago. But the longer your legs are the wider your stance has to be when squatting down. Shuffling your feet from shoulder width to something 2ft wider will also drop your height significantly.

Well spotted Marc. Risk increases and decreases with every second and every passage of boxing. The key is whether the risk is worth it to land that body shot on the way in. You can always double arm block (cover) and simply come upright to be at close range. Nice observation mate, appreciate that.
@bernardblackhurst7792
@bernardblackhurst7792 7 лет назад
That sounds good Fran. What about this as an alternative though? As you land the backhand to the body your weight goes onto your front foot so you can easily push off the front foot and spring backwards with both feet to an out of range position?

@vernshein5430
@vernshein5430 5 лет назад
Plus if you are conventional as you slip to deliver the hook you are slipping to his outside where it is safer IMHO. As a kicker I like to roundhouse kick to the southpaws spleen with my right leg shin. That certainly seems to slow them down. I also find either liver or spleen shot seems to hurt more if they are landed at a slight upward angle to the body.
