The Rice Yellow Stem Borer (Scirpophaga incertulas), also commonly referred to as the paddy stem borer or yellow rice borer, is a significant insect pest that inflicts considerable damage on rice crops in agricultural regions. This pest is especially prevalent and destructive in areas where rice is a staple crop. Comparative analysis between the Kharif (monsoon) and Rabi (winter) growing seasons indicates that the impact of the stem borer is more pronounced during the Rabi season. Damage assessments reveal that early transplanted rice fields may suffer up to 20% yield reduction due to pest infestation, while fields where transplantation occurs later in the season can experience a staggering loss of up to 80%.
It has been observed that the incidence of stem borer infestation is particularly high during the crop's growth period of 40 to 50 days after transplantation.
In this video, we present recommendations for two potent insecticides that have been proven effective in controlling the Rice Yellow Stem Borer. The first insecticide, Vayego, is produced by Syngenta and contains the active ingredient Tetraniliprole at a concentration of 200 grams per liter. This innovative insecticide is recognized for its rapid action as an antifeedant and for providing residual control across all developmental stages of the pest, ranging from eggs to adults. As a result, Vayego is efficacious against a wide array of insect pests that may affect rice crops.
The second insecticide that we advocate for use is Cosayr, manufactured by ADAMA. Cosayr contains Chlorantraniliprole at a concentration of 18.5% by weight and is formulated for foliar application. This insecticide is known for its efficacy in combating both the stem borer and leaf folders, another category of pests that are notorious for damaging rice paddies. These pests collectively pose a significant threat to rice production, with the potential to cause substantial crop losses annually.
Through the strategic use of these insecticides, farmers can effectively manage pest populations, safeguard their rice crops, and minimize the adverse economic impact of infestations.
