Internationally renowned street artist Banksy installed multiple pieces of public art in New Orleans three years after Hurricane Katrina. But over the years the tributes have been covered up with different street art, political posters and plexiglass. Jamie Wax speaks to restoration artists on their effort to save the artworks.

The message changes when it is preserved. I don't believe that was the intent of the artist himself. Katrina was messed up. Bush messed up Katrina. Banksys did what artists do he shined a light there.

I should only hope that many of Banksy‘s drawings and paintings will be preserved and proceeds go to the New Orleans people who lost their homes and their lives.

The City of New Orleans should provide a warehouse location that could be turned into an official Hurricane Katrina Museum, similar to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. After all Katrina was in the U.S.A. The Holocaust was in Germany. It would be a tourist attraction providing employment and an educational opportunity for future generations.

No offence, but I don't see the hotel guy's "passion" for art at All?... Like when the interviewer asks him, "What do you call this room?" - "Banksy room", he replies flatly. I don't think he cares about art, I think he just wants to Possess it, it's a Commodity to him.

I thought maybe the hotel guy was annoyed at the interviewer interrupting him while he (hotel guy) was trying to explain the reason for trying to preserve these. It seemed to me he replied flatly because the interviewer cut him off in the middle of the his explanation.

So, they removed the artwork that was layered on top of the Banksy pieces because they placed more value on his work than the others? These people don't understand Banksy at all. I understand wanting to preserve the original pieces for history, but that's what photographs are for. This is just to make art less accessible and more profitable. Everything Bansky is against. Edit: What about those other artists? What about the messages Banksy was sending? Nothing has changed. Message not received.

I have a photo I got from a second hand store that has a date like stamp thats says Banksey Inspired and a bunch of numbers I do not understand and have not been able to find anything on it online at all.I want to piost pics here and can't seem to find a way to. I would like ba dady to know what it means. I a few days after this found myself in shock face to face at a shop with a panting of his next to a fire extinguisher as the only other thing on that wall. It was one with "keep your coins we want change." I took pictures I aslo took it as my sign that this was good enough because I had no thoughts of ever seeing a real one of his paining in person amd no when to smile at a experience and a half.

It's still graffiti but he does it under the cover of disguise and night because defacing property is still illegal. His stuff is no different than anyone else with a can on spray paint and a little flair. I had a friend that did that in the Westside/SM area. All he did was write his name in block letters but it was distinctive. Wonder if any still exist...
