I'm converting my 89 to carb. I needed to grind away some aluminum from between the third and fourth runners to clearance the exhaust manifold. I plan on using a HEI type distributor . I already rebuilt a 450 cfm Holley from a Ford 302. Glad to hear you improved fuel economy .

Sweet! I love this engine along with the AMC 4.0 in the jeeps. That's when 6 cylinder trucks sounded like trucks, unlike the ones of today that sound like race cars.

I dont know, my dads 2017 f150 with the 5.0 sounds nice, then agin my l6 sounds like a popping johnny at 50 rpms, or undor a load. Witch is best? I dont know.

if you do this dont cheap out on parts it anit worth the time and pain of tuneing it, i have about 700$ in this set up if i had spent the 100$ more on a nicer carb it would be flawless

@@oldreliable303 That's just a holley thing from my experience, I've used an edelbrock before and they just run better out of the box, same with those summit carbs (but they're made of pot metal and I've broken one before). Holleys are a lot more finnicky but I like how they run better when they're dialed in pretty well. Especially if you have a smaller cube engine or it's a mild build. I've found that an edelbrock 600 cfm will make a smaller engine gutless while the same size holley with vaccum secondaries has a lot more low end and better part throttle response.

I've got a spare 78 300 i6 with original carb I'm tempted to drop into a spare 87 F150 I've got, due to the original engine having a tap no one can run down. This video helped a lot with a few things I was pondering, fuel supply, ignition, etc.

Thanks for the response. I guess I am learning as I go. From the little research I've done, there has been a couple that has used 500 cfm, guess I thought 600 was a little much, but coming from someone who has done this, that helps.

MAN! that's a lot of effort and a dang good one, i could never attempt that, i like watching (u lost me on 2 months of wiring) buildups of 300's I have an 81 that I put a 300 out of a late 60s, i need to change the oil pan and pump, the 60s has sump in front because of straight axle, and the carb dosnt have kick down leankage, I'm getting it there, Thanks for the video, you are a smart guy,....(GET A CLUB STEERING WHEEL LOCK!!)

Great job friend bless your heart for wanting to help us who have the 300 cid struggles with EFI my 95 runs great for 15 minutes then starts missing pulling my hair out ! New fuel pump plus all the usual stuff did notice a lot of air in fuel line I eliminated my rear tank a year ago capped off rear lines with compression fittings ran well now air bubbles new map sensor egr valve man I’m tempted to do what you did would like to have a little more wireing info any help would be great l love my truck thanks

I think the rear PCV needs to be hooked up to some kind of vacuum under the carb. At least thats how its hooked up on stock ones with carbs so that blow by stuff can be pulled out of the valve cover area and doesnt gum stuff up

It still keeps the oil, sluge clean with just the breathers on top, but instead of the oil mess being inside of the intake, it makes a mess on the valve cover

Edelbrock 1405 carb , offenhauser square bore intake , split tri Y header , 240 inline head with mild port and bowl work, comp 268 h cam, duraspark 2 conversion tall rotor, adapt a cap and brass terminal cap, recurved distributor and msd 6al box and the 300 6 will make all the hp and trq a regular joes pickup will ever need and then some.

Having played with Ford 300 I6's back in the day, for everyday driving, your best bet is to stay close to stock but, get the HD engine if you can. The power is only a bit better than the regular but, it is built much stronger. If you can't get one, the regular 300 is fine. Find some late 1970's heads because they have higher compression. Don't waste your money and time with headers. Ideally, get the HD exhaust manifold. Otherwise, just stick with the regular production exh manifold. You must have heat under the intake regardless. Otherwise, it will never run right because of fuel condensation along the walls. The HD engines got the Carter YF carb, which had a bigger venturi than the YFA. Make sure there is NO SLOP in the carb linkages. A lot of performance is lost because of loose linkages. The dump truck / school bus 300's gave the best net HP number of 126hp. With the higher compression head, it felt like another 10hp at least. It wasn't the fastest 300 but, it was eager to rev and had great throttle response because it had the hot spot under the intake, like carbureted inline sixes should have.

@@beunbad Mainly school buses and small dump trucks. I remember them being standard equipment in the trucks over 6000 GVW. That meant F-350 and heavier. I think it was optional for the F-250 but, I'm not sure. The 300 HD was popular with fleet buyers who just wanted the lowest prices possible for X number of trucks. Bottom line is that many probably haven't survived due to the nature of the vehicles they worked in. They were worked hard and sold off after seven years depreciation.

I have a 81 that's burning a lot of oil and knocking. I just picked up a 94 efi complete block and head. My plan is to swap all my carb manifolds and accessories onto it.

Put the tail pipe out the passenger side so you can fumigate the ditch for mosquitos as you drive. And when the smoke stops then it needs more oil.

two revisons, get a carter fuel pump not the sending pump from ford. and a 600 cfm holley works much better.

Grant Smith yes, the regulater is holley bp 12-803 it is realy over kill for this but is faily cheap, and it being a by pass regulater it keeps you from boiling your fuel, over presserizeing your fuel sistom, it is used manely it act in place of the retrun line from the carb. because most carbs do not have a retrun line from them, this line nominaly comes from the mechainley fuel pump.

Don’t listen. A 350 holly is all you need. Not enough cfm for a 4 barrel carb. The 350 Holley with a 260 comp cam will amaze you !

Will any carborated manifold made for this engine fit? I have efi as well and want to put a four barrel on it and see different manifolds on summit racing and jegs. Do the carborated manifolds bolt up same as efi?

thankyou so much for sharing, i have a 91 ford f350 4by4 deisel. i want to put a 89 300 six in it, now i know i can use all the parts off an older six from the 70s. i want a carburater instead of all the crap. i want it old school. would i be able to put a distributor that has points in it?? im just not that good at wiring up electronic ignition. id like to look under the hood and it would look like something from the 60s

Hello Russell I know your post is old like 2 years old but you said your truck was diesel so was it 7.3 or 6.9 idi iam looking for parts or the whole motor I have a 91 f350 with a 7.3idi but I also have a 1991 f150 with a 4.9 300 6 cylinder that doesn't run I think the computer is bad because I dont have any spark, the fuel pumps dont kick on when I try to start it I haven't tried to shot either in it go start it will do that

Do you think the cam you have has helped power and MPG over the stock EFI cam? My plan is , is to use the GM HEI distributor and do away with any of the Ford box. Even before this was common I've cut the tops out of GM distributors and machined it to the engine I needed it for. One hot wire for ignition and you're racing. I also wanna try to adapt the EFI plenum to take the carburetor over having to buy the offenhauser setup. I have 2 of these with M-5 transmissions with 4x4 transfer cases. I now wanna put one in an 87 GM Silvarodo. Personally I love the 4.9 5 speed 4x4. But luv the 87 square GM 4x4 Silvarodo truck better than the F- series. Thanks for your reply. Any ideas on using the long tubes of the EFI intake I'm listening. My Silvarodo is too clean and nice to cut a hole thru the hood for the carburetor n air filter to stick thru. , But those long runners should make the gas fully atomized before getting into combustion chamber. A preacher friend of mine was racing in the late 50's - 70's and made his own intake manifolds. He would get the carburetor as far away as possible and make runners from it to the head ports. He won lots of races by simply making his intake runners as long as possible.

Yes you can the lobe is on the cam, and the boss is on the block, but you have to cut a hole in the block for the pump arm to pass though

I'm in the process of changing a 92 model EFI inline 6 300 to run carbureted very similar to yours but I'm putting it in a 2000 F250 extended cab and be hooked up to a np435 manual transmission with Granny low Thumbs Up On You video it's giving me a lot of pointers that I couldn't understand the lingo off of the forms. Wondering if you tried or thought about mounting the carb rotated 90 degrees (primaries towards passenger side fender well). I was told I had to do this as it provides better fuel distribution, particularly at slower speeds (running only on primaries). Otherwise front 3 cylinders could get more fuel than rear 3. However, I have throttle cable challenges because of it and would prefer to set mine up like you did. Any thoughts on carb mount position? Any lean condition on the rear cylinders? My Offy is a dual plane, not sure if that makes the difference.

The offy dp like you have is made for that setup, my is the offy c on witch i can only mount the carb the way i have it. Have had both i dont think the mounting rotateson makes much diffen.

I'm in a position where I have to do as you have are you still willing to share advice? My main concern is wiring ,I have same model truck. Cannot find wire causing me to have a miss at part throttle every thing imaginable has been replaced in engine management system

Anne DiMassa if you have replaced all of that you have alot of money put into it, maby a new wireing harness is a better route. as far as back dating to carb just copy the wireing of a pre 83 f150 with the 300 l6, plus a fuel pump.

Pull a fuel pressure test. Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator may be failing. Also check iginiton timing.

Since you went to the 4 barrel intake, I would get the Howell or the other EFI bolt on kits that bolt in place of the carb

Numa Newbern yes, but for that much money, i could have fixed the stock efi. then got a aftore market ecu. the carb just needs a tune two times a year, thats just a few mins to do that. i dont think a bolt on efi kit would get me any more power, or better mpgs. just my 2 cents, your milage may very.

My point was since you went to the expense of the 4 barrel intake, you could of had up to date technology of the new EFI without all the plumbing and issues of the original, these new kits you can use a frame mount EXTERNAL fuel pump, anyway GREAT job with your change,

You said tractor cam? Where do I find one and what do I ask for? I assume this cam has much better power down low and that'll be great for best mpg.

Phil Lowman i found that tractor in a junk yard, i dont know what model it was. just look for a industrial engine of some kind there were rv type cams in these. the one i have (had, i swaped in a comp 252h) has the same lift but more durasontion than a stock truck cam

Thanks for this. I put an EFI engine in my 81 F100 with the same set up as you have except I have a Quick Fuel 450 cfm carb. I'm having trouble tuning it too. I have to set the timing at 2500 rpm retarded until it runs smooth. Did you get yours to idle smoothly? I just ran across the shrouded valve thing. Mine has an intermittent miss at idle only. It does haul ass now and gets 17 mpg. I just wish I could get the idle set right. Thanks again for sharing this.

Try colder spark pulgs, or mess with the timing. I have always have had a hard time getting the efi head to idle with the carb...

OMG. Do not listen to the author of this video. You don’t idle because your carb is to freaking big. Google how to check CFM of an engine and do the math. Proper fuel air ratio is key ! Cubic inches times max rpm your engine will turn devided by 3456 equals CFM of your engine. You only need a 350 cfm carb

I'm thinking about putting a late 90s 4.9 in my 83 with a 4.9 carbureted. What snags am I going to run into putting that newer block in and bolting up the old carburetor and exhaust?

Go on FTE and dive into the forums in the inline 6 section. Search for 4.9 efi to carb, to get started.

you need the duraspark 2 distributor as well then just use a wiring diegram that you can find in a ciffords book for the duraspark 2. you will end up useing only the 2 signal wires and power, ground wires from the tfi, you need all of the duraspark 2 or tfi, not half and half

Junkyard, its off a 1 ton chevy with a big block, and i welded a spacer on it so it would clear the carb.

I have a 70 so it has mechanical fuel pump I believe my gas tank is probably rusted out. what fuel pump do I need to look for in order to run 450 to 600 cfm carb??

Isaiah N a highflow mechanical with a return line, or just the stock one will do. the engine aint taking anymore fuel, you just now have 2 float boals.

What's giving you so much trouble with the wiring? Seems like it'd just be a relay to the fuel pump and a relay to the ignition?

Trying not to kill the gages, lights radio... and tying my wiring in to the factory harness. Plus i was clueless of how to wire anything, i was only 16 when i did this.

The newer blocks have boss and taped holes, but where the arm goes though for the pump you need to cut a hole. Witch is not hard but you will need to drop the pan to clean shavings.

Chris Watson none of the smog set up is left, and there are only three vacuum lines needed, vacuum adv. , brake booster, and one goes to the heater contols

What is that sensor thing by your upper radiator hose? I bought a 79 F250 inline 6 as a project and it has that sensor thing by the hose and nothing connected to it. What is that and how can I put it back to normal.

Its one of two water temp sensors, it is only used on efi trucks, the sensor that goes to the gage is at the back of the block undoor the exost manfold

So I got my truck running an I messed with the timing a little bit I had it perfect thr first time but running lean made me think it was the timing but I noticed any little time past base really hurts this 300 in starting, power any thing if it's not dead on it will crank forever.

Yeah I wanted to get a duraspark but everything near me is just picked out or fucked. I'm learning very quickly that hei distributors do not like lean mixtures at all at about 2000 rpm it leans out an starts vibrating Luke it had a Jake brake but if you let off it stops an returns to about 13.5-14.5. But when it starts doing that shit it jumps to like 16.5

Yes it will run, but you will have fixed timing.

So I could reuse my distributor if I just unplugged the spout to bypass the computer? Then all I would need is a fuel pressure regulator a offy dual plane intake and a quadrajet? My computer works so I shouldn't have to rewire the fuel pump or ignition correct?

Yes that would run, you would need to get a very nice regulater, or swap the pump. The ingition will work but there will be no advace, so the 10° you set at idile is all you will have, it will run poorly at higher rpms, say 1000 rpms and up.

@@handsonlatham7802 no. You would need a msd box for the ignition you have now, or replace it like i did. You need a timing curve, a car or truck is not like a lawn mower or a genarater where fixed timing is ok.
