Everyone, I got a couple GOOD questions about this, so I wanted to clarify it, as my wording was very confusing in the video @ 7:10 - I was measuring the plane as being tail heavy, but it felt like it was flying NOSE heavy, so I moved the battery FURTHER back to see if it would help. I had another commenters suggest that the way I had marked the CG on the wings was wrong...I used a piece of paper to lay tight along the leading edge of the wing to the recommended points - This was wrong because you're supposed to measure STRAIGHT back, and I was following the contours of the wing, so my marks were ahead of where they should have been. This would explain why my plane was flying nose heavy, while measuring tail heavy. Sorry about my mistake. We'll fix it in the future.

I have a question on the terms you use. After the correction, and as soon as you turned on the flaps, you remarked that it was much better. What was different? You said you have "plenty of elevator authority now but with no ballooning." What does that mean? I'm new if you can't tell.
@MikeSarni
@MikeSarni 3 года назад
@@jdouglasj2000 he corrected flap corrections in the transmitter if you go back and look he lowered them.... Also he had more till authority because he mechanically trimmed the elevator after his 4s flight....I know it sounds a little confusing but he corrected both of these issues while being inside then when he came back out and flew this is the part you saw 👍

I’m using telemetry with my 637T open stock RX in my Turbo Timber. Your Tractor receiver may be locked for programming. Power up Tractor and scroll down to Telemetry, select auto configure. Find Volts and set min volts to 14.4 which is 3.8 v/cell for a 4S. I get voltage audio every 30 seconds but no audio warning when volts go below 14.4. Instead I use custom voice “volts” in the Telemetry category. So any time I cut the throttle and move the C switch from 2 to 1 and when I hear 14.4 I know that after landing I’m at around storage voltage. One day I hope we will have official written documentation from Horizon.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
I don't have voice alerts on my DX18, as it's a Gen1 :(.... BUT that being said, why doesn't a transmitter of this caliber come with more documentation??? I've always been baffled by this. As for the low and high thresholds, why even have them if there isn't an alarm to sound or activate when the threshold is hit. I find this to be very disappointing, but still LOVE my DX18.

Brian--Just assembled my Air Tractor, my horizontal stab also has an obvious downward warp on both sides, a little more so on the left. Maybe a flaw in their mold? Also that tail wheel setup is confusing. I set up mine like you did the first time. If the steering is crappy I will install that extra piece, although I do not see why the simple set up will not work. Overall I think Horizon did a real nice job on this plane, they just keep getting better and better. In a week or two I am going to get the Conscendo, I have a bunch of 1300mah packs that should work good and keep the plane light.

Brian, your camera crew is one of the best on u-tube! she does a great job and usually bails you out on builds. Keep up the good work you all make a great team. Now a few questions? 3 planes of interest 1) eflite 1.5 mustang 2) eflite 2.1 ss cub 3) fms 1.7 Corsair What’s your opinion on any of the 3 for intermediate flyers (ease of flying) any of them fly like the air tractor?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
1) 1.5m Mustang flies well, but you better have a full scale landing strip as it gets wonky as heck on landings, and it's heavy...so it's not near as enjoyable experience on PAVEMENT STRIPS as the 1.2m P-51D, which is also much cheaper... Harder to fly than the Air Tractor, but not a "Hard" plane to fly...just hard to takeoff and land, which is not A-typical of tail dragging, high P-factor Warbirds. 2) Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m is flawless, if you don't mind having fairly expensive batteries, and have a means of getting it to and from the place you fly. It is very good, but wish HH would have added LED's at this relatively high price point. Flies like a dream. I've literally ran into the power lines with her, and kept flying for 5 minutes before landing. I also had the spinner and prop came off (which took me 2 minutes to find, BTW) and dead stick landed on the runway, no problem...this was a fluke, but shows the extreme good flying characteristics. I should have knows the collet was loose - this was MY BAD, but HH sent me a new cowl to replace my damaged one!!! 3) 1.7m Corsair - Jury is still out. I have the "new" prop to speed it up, on the way. I'll republish a video ASAP when it arrives. I'll do it like an unbox, build, and re-maiden (at the beginning) - Ask me in a week ;) Flies and lands pretty easy. Looks and feels great on grass, since it's HUGE, but he thing will do okay on pavement if you grease the landings. I have videos on all three, so watch the videos.

What a janky tail wheel setup is right!!! lol Come on Horizon, where's your instructions for this whole step? Glad I wasn't the only one who was overly confused by this silly simple step. Couple tips for others: Those thick coarse screws for mounting the aluminum bracket were slightly too large go through the bracket freely without the screws binding up at strange angles, so I drilled those holes out slightly for some play. Next your clip of screwing in those coarse screws looked dangerously tough going for my comfort. Yours had me clenching my cheeks hahah. Didn't want to risk splitting the plastic or worse sheering off the cheap screw heads on the way in, so I pre drilled out the yellow plastic holes ever soo slightly to ease the install. They were still very snug so I got the size just right! Then I was really liking how you initially attached the springs directly to the control arm, and not that additional extended yellow arm with those set screw clamps. So I did some research...If you zoom in on the Air Tractor pictures on Horizons site, you can definitely tell the springs are hooked directly to the control arm only like you first had. On one or two of Horizon's Air Tractor videos, I was able to get a glimpse that they didn't use that adapter either. The springs are parallel looking and not V'd out like they are with that arm. A shot on Pilot Ryan Media's video shows he hooked them direct too and didn't use that extended arm. So I'm confused as to what that extended yellow arm is even for, floats only maybe? I did end up building mine initially with that piece but think I will give it a try both ways to see if it even matters? It feels to me like the springs will stay hooked in better directly hooked into the hole in the arm than with those set screw clamps.

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Yeah, it's just an unusual issue on an Eflite plane....not to say it's an Eflite issue, but more I think it's, like you said, an air frame issue. As for being a problem...I hadn't even remembered this issue until you mentioned it here. Super easily overcome, and I wouldn't use that as a "deal breaker"...but this plane is a bit more tricky to get flying amazing. Kinda reminds me of the Twin Otter, in the sense that it's BEAUTIFUL and SCALE, but it just takes a bit more to get it flying ROCK SOLID like some other Eflite planes more or less come out of the box already flying... Hope this makes sense.

Hey Brian. Love the videos. On take off into slight wind and with safe on my air tractor abruptly went vertical so much so that I couldn't control it and nosed into the ground. I confirmed before take off that safe was on. Have you ever noticed an issue with safe select on this model plane?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
Never. I assume you had a servo fail, but could be as simple as a screwed up trim. Did you initiate it LEVEL? The newer (SAFE Select) planes SHOULDN'T initiate out of level, but I suppose you could get it to do it if you really did something funky.
@tyosborne4870

@@BrianPhillipsRC I checked and rechecked the elevator trim before the flight and it seemed fine. I had just replaced the elevator servo and even though I checked the trim and the servo carefully, it very well could have malfunctioned. Seemed to be working after the crash though. Yea my twin otter has the same curve in it as well and goes straight when the elevator is fully deployed scratching my head on that one still. And thanks for reviewing the Air Tractor cause that’s the next one in the cart!!! And I have a question real quick because I’m stumped on something with the Eflite SU-30 I just got yesterday after I had a horrible flight with it today seemed like it was losing signal at like 100 yards and every time I plug the battery in I had to rebind it to the transmitter. Is that a RX problem ? “and safe as well won’t work” I’m leaning towards the receiver is defective. I checked my TX with my other planes and no issue any help would be appropriated thanks and happy and safe flying!! And yes btw I seen that with the thumb lol all I can say is it’s a great one definitely better with flaperons!!!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
That's no fun at all!!!! I'd be leaning that direction too! Are you doing the bind procedure with the BIND BUTTON or the BIND PLUG? If you're doing it with the bind plug, try the other method, and opposite. I once had a DX5 (I know - old, and inexpensive, so might not be a great comparison) where the antenna BROKE inside the foldy part...I lost a Sport Cub S UMX also, when I had the single antenna break from the multipurpose Rx Brick. Both conditions were a mechanical break... Did you, or CAN you do a RANGE TEST? It's a very good tool, but admittedly, I've only ever done a Range Test ONCE ;) It was on my Airbus A330-600, right after I swear I lost signal on my A320 and lost it - but later realized (or remembered) I just screwed up...

Brian Phillips it only has bind plug you think for all that money they would of used the new smart RX!!! I figured it out they had the BEC hooked up to the signal and the ground it’s supposed to be hooked to the power and ground so it wasn’t remembering that it was bound so I just unplugged it switch the wire around and everything works fine now leave it to Horizon to make a simple mistake LOL and can’t wait to see your next vid bet I know what it is LMAO and like I said set up flaperons it’s great with that mix. One thing I have found after flying this plane numerous times, The elevator trim kept changing What I found is that the horizontal stab is loose in the fuselage, I was wondering about this when I assembled it. after many flights the horizontal stab can be moved back and forth. I was concerned about this. I knew that following the curve of the wing might have an adverse impact on the correct spot, but I assumed that the "range" given was to help provide for these small differences. Question if I have to remove the wings to transport it to the field do you think doing this continually will make them loose on the tube and going into the fuselage? Do you think removing and reinstalling those screws in the wing numerous times would make them loose over time as well? The Timber Turbo Evo and Apprentice wings come off and reinstall pretty easily and no real concern about doing it numerous times over a long period of time... Just wondering what your thoughts are, I'm thinking it's one of those planes where you install the wings once and leave them installed.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Yes. It will wear an tear the system. I highly recommend NOT removing anything you can KEEP together... I would say the Turbo Timber is a bit of a nuance, in that the wings are SOOO easy to remove. These and others are not quite the same. Seems the low wing planes or any plane where there's a "pocket" to receive the wing, they're gonna get more beat up with repeated build and build.

CRASHED my Air Tractor, some how the plane took off with a weird trim causing it to stall from a vertical takeoff. The plane couldn't overcome the up trim. my question is the flap servo's are damaged do the have to be a reversed servo only? Bought SPMSA332 these are not reversed. love your channel, thanks for helping the sport to stay alive.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
I honestly don't know. The Flaps channel is pretty easy since it's not controlled by AS3X or SAFE....so if they operate the wrong way, you can simply reverse the channel, but if you have ONE that goes the wrong way, and one that goes the right way...this is more of a pain in the butt.... Choice 1 - Physically disassemble the electronics inside, and swap BOTH of these things...the motor leads, and TWO of three of the feedback potentiometer, and your servo WILL be a "reverse" servo...or at least it'll be reversed from what it HAD been. Choice 2 - Buy and use this on only ONE of the two servos....and it'lll reverse the direction it operates... Servo Signal Reverser amzn.to/3qgEqHF Choice 3 - Get a different servo Choice 4- cut the wing so the servo can "Face" the other way...thus changing the output direction.

So when you set Aircraft Type in thie video, you choose 1 and 1. But the picture on the radio shows by servos, and this plane has 2 and 2? That is confusing? It's using all 6 channels. Any thoughts?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
I talk about it a lot in many of our other radio setup portions of build videos, but I must have omitted it here - CONTROL CHANNELS are not the same as the number of servos. Sometimes servos are controlled in groups because they're wired together...Other times we MIX the control in the Transmitter or the Receiver. Example 1) Think of a split elevator - both are controlled by ONE STICK on your radio, right? Example 2) Think of ailerons - one on the left wing moves one way and one on the right wing moves the opposite - NOPE, they're mounted OPPOSITE ;) This is how we easily accomplish this all too common feat...BUT you're still using one STICK. I know that in the realm of computerized radio systems, it can be confusing, but just give it some time and you'll get it. We dive into a lot of detail on other planes, and you'll get it soon. I actually talk a lot about this in the recently released XFly - T-7A video, if you're curious.

When I watch your videos, I'm basically thinking "does this plane look cool? Does something about it in flight impress me?" But when you did the A-10 video, which is a very cool looking plane and a fast plane, you discouraged buyers when you said that you can't see what the plane looks like when it's flying far away from you. I thought that was a very good point. I'm curious what makes you like a plane, if how it looks isn't significant. I started with a Champ RTF, which was really fun for a couple flights but then I got bored. So I got a Carbon Cub S+ which was much more fun, mostly because it was so much bigger. If you screw up a Champ landing, so what? It's the size of a housefly and I don't really care what it does on landing. But I want my Carbon Cub to land properly, which takes a little doing.

Great! Sounds like you're getting my points ;) When I review a plane, I want to cover the features, of course, but ANYONE can do that. For whatever reason, people have come to expect my opinion to help guide their decisions to buy...and I can say this for certain...being I'm a total cheapskate, the small details make a big difference sometimes, and Horizon Hobby will not share any negative items the way I will (even though I work with them now...and also work with other suppliers too, if it weren't obvious). I try to pic out a few things that AREN'T perfect about a plane, so that you can get a REAL feel for the experience you will expect. This can help you to make a purchase decision between this plane and another...if you're like me, you can't buy 4 planes a month!!! You have to PICK what you REALLY want. I hope to bring this to the table as we review. Of course, we will still have fun doing it, and share the love of the "sort" and encourage the addiction. If more are involved, prices will get better and better and technology will advance faster, so I'm all about a more robust hobby. I want us all to enjoy it more and more every year. I also hope that with a larger group of RC pilots, we will have more pull with the BS government regulators who want to strip us of this wonderful freedom for absolutely mindless reasons. HOWEVER, this model doesn't like to settle down great on hard surfaces, so if you want to have better luck, get some pneumatic tires, and you'll be golden!!! P.S. We have a "second thoughts" video ready to publish April 13th at 10AM, if you're curious ;)

Brian, you should get the Dynam BF-109. They have some on eBay brand new and it’s an AMAZING plane!

I've been trying to get one for a few years now, but just never works out. I was trying to have Banggood send it for review, but it never happened. P.S. I really like Dynam. They seem to make a nice plane, for a good price.

Brian Phillips I was shocked when I saw them on eBay and I immediately ordered! I’m sure a free plane is a great plane but this one is really worth buying! For a price point of 189.00 you can’t beat it! www.ebay.com/itm/183964220913

Which do you like better the Commander or Tractor?

Commander is way better all around, but the Tractor is for scale looks, and it DOES also fly very good too. Air Tractor bit.ly/3PoSL2c Commander bit.ly/3OqIJw2

Brian - I'm helping a guy learn to fly his Air Tractor using the wireless trainer option. We have a DX9 set up as the Instructor radio and a DX6 as the student radio. A strange thing is happening that I've not had happen before with wireless training. We have rates and expo set up on the master radio. I did a test flight and set the trims as needed. Then I set the student radio to have all the same rates, expo and trim values as the master radio. He is the weird thing - even though the student radio has all the same values - the actual throws, expo and trim - turn out to be only about 1/2 of the master radio ! So I have to double the rates, expo and trim values on the student radio to get the same results that the master radio gets. Do you have any idea why this is happening ? We have been able to train okay - but its a hassle to adjust the student radio by doubling and and don't know what causes it or if there could be any potential problem.

I'm embarrassed to admit, but I haven't ever even used that feature, so I know I'm letting you down here, but I have no idea. As for the rates, could you make another model, then you wouldn't have to go back and forth? Like Air Tractor Trainer and Air Tractor Experienced - the one would have double rates and expo, while the other would be the half ??? sometimes it's easier to make a "work around" than to actual fit the firmware...as we have zero access to the latter.

Very different planes, FYI. This one is lumbering and has quite the presence, while the RV7 is a FIRE-CRACKER!!!!
