In this video I present a set of gut strings made by Efrano.
On the package there was no mention of which type of tension this set has. But some diameters were indicated:
G: 215
D: 270
A: 240
E: 330
Sound examples: • Efrano Gut Strings for...
A long smaltalk about gut strings: • Efrano Gut Strings for...
Playing "Broadway": • Efrano Gut Strings for...
A little remark: After listening to the recordings my impression was that these strings have a very clear sound AND I was surprised that they had more sustain than I thought, compared to other plain gut sets I had used in the past. But this may also come from the fact that the action on the bass I used is not particularly high. Usually you would set a slightly higher action and I guess this would emphasize the typical gut sound: Stronger thump in the attack, and quicker decay in the sustain.
You will find sound clips of these strings (and of approx. 30 other string types) on my website: www.hervejeanne.de/en/string-m...
Bass: Otto Rubner 1960
Bass microphone: Audio Technica AT 4041
Speaker microphone: AKG C414

Yes, Paul Keller is great! I find my favourite (synthetic) gut aspect is the lower tension and feel even moreso than the sound (which I also dig). I agree though that some music calls for a bit more sustain than the guts can give. Thanks for posting!

I love gut strings, but I play vintage style country music , blues, and Western swing so it’s THE sound you hear on the old records. Steel strings just cannot give me that punchy fundamental-heavy sound.

dear Hervé, thank you for the review and for all the work you've done with the string matrix. I've been using it for years. I don't know if I saved more money than I spent after listening to your samples and deciding I want some of the strings from the matrix but it was definitely worth it )) I'm playing Efrano plain GDA and they are great. the A is solid and high twist construction and the sound is nice and warm. I prefer those over all the other cheap strings I've tried (lenzner kuerschner clef la bella etc) and many more expensive like pirastro dlugolecki and sonores (i still have the A and E of the basso set but although great strings i do not think they sound like gut at all) Generally Id say you don't need a very high action unless you really want to dig in, i found that both volume and sustain come when you press them strings down the right way. That is a great point you have made that its like playing another instrument and I think it is a good idea to stick with it for a while and get to know it as best you can. whatever the sound guy is doing, it is going to be your sound and gut strings sound and even if you think the trumpet would be more proper in the context and you're there playing saxophone instead that doesn't make you want to relearn and come back with the trumpet thats how i see it. I love your tone on the Efranos by the way, great thump! be well, sasha

Thanks a lot Sasha! Action for gut strings: that's an interesting point, thanks. My feeling is, that with a higher action you will get a shorter, thumpier sound - more old school. But as you say it is also an option to play gut with a "not so high" action. And concerning sound guys (on recordings): I am just a little allergic to having them change the "envelope" (dynamic course) with compressors, because in my quest for strings the envelope is one of the most important parameters that I am "working on". I mean: I a searching for years for a certain envelope (which has a certain effect in the band context) and then the sound guy ruins my efforts... Still, you are right, many aspects of my playing will remain and it's still "me". Cheers!

Very interesting. Thank you very much! Love how you talk about gut strings. I'm still deciding what to do. As of tomorrow I'm going to build myself a electric upright bass and think that many of them sound like fretless bass guitars. To solve that 'problem' I'm thinking of buying gut(like) strings so to not have too much sustain and avoid the metal sound. Don't know if you've got any insight if this, but if so please let me know :-)

Thanks for this video and especially for your thoughts and comments on the topic! I'm playing gut strings for almost 10 years now. In contrast to your first experience with gut strings, for me it was the feeling when playing the strings that completely excited me. I love the thicker grip, lesser tension and softer feel. Since I play the strings, I've never had blisters on the fingers of my right hand, even after hour-long sessions. I don't think that gut strings, in particular sets with wound E and A strings, need a much higher action than steel strings (an adjustable bridge helps a lot finding the "sweet spot"). Currently, I'm playing the gut-a-like deluxe on one bass which - in contrast to the swing master - have a finer metal winding on E and A and also bow very well. On the other bass, I have plain gut D+G and Pirastro Jazzicato (the non-tungsten) on E+A which also mix well on this instrument, though I'll definitely try the Pirazzi Slap some time since I might favor a slightly brighter sound on E and A than the gut-a-like deluxe deliver.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 4 года назад
I haven't tried gut-a-like deluxe yet. Can you describe the sound difference, compared to the swingmaster?
@DrJohn123
@DrJohn123 4 года назад
@@stringmatrix I only briefly tested the swingmaster strings on another bass, so I cannot make a good statement on sound differences. Tension-wise, they are similar. I just don't like copper on the outside because after a while your fingers turn black due to the oxidation.

Great work, thanks very much. Personally i prefer gut strings, even a plain gut low A, for arco playing. It's a more "three-dimensional" sound as compared to the meagre two dimensions of steel strings, or at least that's the way i feel it. I also use a very, very low string action. I'm lucky to have a luthier here who is incredibly good at planing the fingerboard just right for the lowest possible action without buzzing. Keep up the good work, thanks again!
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 3 года назад
Thank you! Yes, in my feeling gut has a more complex timbre, whereas steel and synthetic like obligato have a more simple/smooth timbre. Interesting that you play low action on gut!
@harukokorneel6585
@harukokorneel6585 3 года назад
Probably the extremely low action only works in Arco playing. It's been decades since i last played anything resembling jazz :-( I go as low as 4mm for the G string and 7 for the E. And i don't play louder than, say, f or ff. Within the limits of what the music and the instrument demand, the low action works very well, and it opens up many technical possibilities that would otherwise be quite hard. Extensions and chords become totally natural. Thank you for the great videos, very informative. And nice playing too!

Gday Hervé from Australia! Just wondering if the Efrano strings are hard on your hands. I used to play velvet garbos and unless I played everyday (bass is my second instrument) it was so hard on my right hand. The Efranos sound so good on your bass and on the other video you made beat all the other strings for tone hands down! Although the Evah Slaps come close! Thanks for your vids, cheers!
@stringmatrix

Do you mean hard on the left hand? Maybe the efranos are a little softer (tension-wise) but I think it won't be a huge difference. But I am glad you like them, I hope you will give them a try!

My quest is to find the best plain gut substitute. I don't want a sound half way between gut and steel. Instead, I want the thump and short sustain of gut without actually using gut. So far I've used gut a like swingmasters but the e and a destroyed the fingerboard. I'm currently using superior bassworks dirty gut strings. These are kevlar core wrapped in nylon and work quite well for what I want though I will continue searching. Love your videos!

Thank you Stephen! I didn't know the Superior Bassworks strings yet. Sounds interesting. Is their sound comparable to the sound of the Gut-A-Like Swingmaster strings?

@@stringmatrix very comparable. To my ear they have more bottom end punch than the swingmasters but the e and a lack sustain and definition because they are not wound like the swingmasters. I prefer the superior bassworks but may put the swingmaster E string back on.
