I love this fly!!! I fished the Salmon river near Stanley, Idaho last weekend. The first hour started slow as I changed flies regularly to find one the fish liked. Finally tried the Red Dart and over the next few hours I had more than 20 hookups---both rainbows and cutthroats. Great work Lance!

So glad I stumbled on this tutorial. It's great to know the history and thought behind the pattern development. Thanks Lance and FFF!

Another staple in my box. I used this yesterday in combination with a frenchie and just pounded fish and many of the takes damn near pulled the rod out of my hand. Great pattern lance and keep them coming

Thanks for all you do for the fishing community! For clarification if looking for the sulky it cannot be found listed as pearl, you'll need to search for sulky sliver metallic opalescent. Part #145-8040 Hope this helps!

Try natural bees wax for dry fingers. I had a lot of problems for dubbing noodles too but now i don't. And because I come from bee keeping family I have a quite big block of it at my desk. My hands are not dry anymore and dubbing noodles are prettier and smaller than ever. Greetings from Slovenia! and tight lines

Another great fly and a well produced video. Thanks for all you do for us novices of the world. Would Uni Mono Thread be suitable substitute for using the 5x tippet? I'm not sure if it will be strong enough

Would you use red floss or yarn for tail instead of hackle fibers? Blowtorch style?

I was on the Provo last week and a guy in the parking lot recommeded this fly. said he caught 15 fish on the Red Dart when I caught 1 using size 22-24 flies. I'm going to tie some of these and see how they work in CO.

Just wanted to say thank you for the video. I tied this fly and headed to the dam that is about 5 min. away. I caught a bunch of eating size bluegill and, didn't expect this, 2 channel catfish. One of the cats about 1 1/4 lbs.

Sorry for the late question Lance. Have you tried a tag of red Glo-brite instead of feather. If not, why does the feather work in your opinion? Thanks in anticipation.

I bought the Greenwell Whiting 4b. The fibers are super long. All seem to go way past the bend. Even on a size 12. Do you have another suggestion like the one Lance uses?
@FlyFishFood
@FlyFishFood 7 лет назад
Did you buy the cape or the saddle? The cape is the one he uses. Another substitute is a Whiting Brahma hen cape in a brownish dyed color.

There is a fly called Czech Weapon which is basically the same pattern. Does this fly go by two names or did something get mixed up?

Lance, do you think it would be detrimental to eliminate the soft hackle on the Red Dart?

The word 'garish' comes to mind...That nymph, or whatever it is, looks like it belongs in some kinda parade. It's all part of the intrigue, though. I like it!

Do you have to use jig nymphs on euro nymph rig or can you use jig nymphs on any nymph rig someone please help I want to tie them but I don't euro nymph.
@jeffreylong6663
@jeffreylong6663 7 лет назад
Bradley Tristan you can definately use jig nymphs for indicator nymphing. I use them all the time. I'm a big time believer in jig nymphs for losing less fly and keeping your hooks sharper, longer. Also when you tie one on as your top fly on a 2 fly indicator rig you can tie your second piece of tippet right into the same eye instead of off the bend of the hook which I never liked.

its not silly at all flies with a bright tails catch hella fish 1 of my first flies was tied w a purple long tail it got hit mid air on the drop first cast there are many flies that are colorfull bright green red etc like the ones that roam near compost

Is there a good alternative to the UV pink ice dub? That has to be the worst dubbing ever made. No matter what I do I can't get it to stick to the thread...
@homebrew2102
@homebrew2102 5 лет назад
Jeff, remember - less is more. Lance only does two wraps with it so you don't need much. Very small pinch and lengthen it by pulling the dubbing thin before putting it behind the thread and then twist gently in the same direction. That should do fine. If you are still having issues, apply some beeswax or dubbing wax but again you don't need much dubbing at all. Hopefully, that helps.
@JamesSmith-hw6tl

Just use wax on your fingers and use small amounts, really twist it.

Hmm is looks a lot like blow torch but a different color. So did this come before or after Devon Olson's?
@tonysobina8390

Pull some ice dub , not alot from the bag and cut in half then take and twist onto the thread, then make a dubbing loop and twist it up! It will tighten down really nice and you can make a really nice tight hot spot! My favorite way to do this! Hope this helps!
