This is one my favorite soft hackle hare's ear variations. It was featured as one of my confidence flies in our instructional film Modern Nymphing. It's a variation on the tungsten carotene jig designed by my former Fly Fishing Team USA Teammate Mike Sexton, which is available from Umpqua Feather Merchants. I've added CDC soft hackle to the pattern to make it more mobile. It is an excellent searching pattern and fishes well whenever caddis are hatching.

nice tie, Soft hackles are my favorite. I'll have to try the CDC next time.

Mercury Adhesives makes some excellent superglue. We use it a lot with FPV drones. They have some sort of design which prevents the bottle from drying out or clogging. They also have different viscosities. It may be worth a look.

Thanks for sharing Devin! I've been fishing this pattern since I first saw it during the filming of Modern Nymphing. Deadly pattern for sure!

This fly is a killer!! I had it in my box for months before I tried it. This has become one of my top producing flies. It catches fish in every river and any time of the year. Thanks for sharing.

When using a slotted bead on a nymph hook, do you find the bead makes the size of the fly smaller. For an example, a 14 hook with a 2.8 beads is the size of a size 16 fly
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 5 лет назад
Any bead on a straight nymph hook will make a shorter fly as the bead doesn't rotate forward like on a jig hook.

Thanks, Devin. What do you think about using the offset tungsten beads on this?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 4 года назад
I use offset beads interchangeably with slotted beads on any of my nymphs. I just change them based on the weight I want because the offset beads are around 15-20% heavier than the same size slotted bead.

Hi Devin, using the CDC is a real nice touch. You use "super glue" often, is there a particular formula that makes "super glues" waterproof for tying purposes or are all "super glue" generically the same. Thanks much
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 5 лет назад
I don't use superglue to make the thread waterproof. I've just found that it holds the whip finish together better than head cement so the fly is very durable. I've had the best experience with Loctite brushable mainly because the applicator brush doesn't clog as quickly as zap a gap.

how would you feel about using the cdc loop method for the collar instead?
@tacticalflyfisher3817

Delerium89 it certainly works fine. It just takes a little more time.

Thanks for sharing, Devin. Do you ever tie this on a jig hook and fish it on the point?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 7 лет назад
Hi Mina, you could absolutely tie it on a jig hook. I swap back and forth with it on the point and dropper so fish it wherever you feel it needs to be.

Is this still one of your confidence flies or has it been replaced? has it been amended?
@tacticalflyfisher3817

It’s still high in the rotation. I occasionally try different dubbing for the thorax collar but nothing else has changed.

Is this still one of your go to confidence flies? I’m looking for very simple flies that have more movement that compliment slim flies like perdigons/quildigons.

@@tacticalflyfisher3817 thanks Devin. Do you use the hares ear version of your blowtorch and if so what is the difference between these two flies when deciding to fish them.

So it's the Czech age old 'Thread Fly' but with cdc instead of partridge. You and Lance Egan (especially Lance) coming up with tiny variations to an existing pattern and claiming it as your own.
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 Год назад
If you were to read anything I’ve written about the pattern you would see that I mention it is a Czech standby. I just happened to be introduced to a non-soft hackle version by a friend Mike Sexton, who calls it the carrot, before seeing the Czech version. Pretty sure I never claimed it as my own, hence the reason I’ve never submitted it to be tied commercially.
@OnTheFlyNZ
@OnTheFlyNZ Год назад
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 I did read the description that says "It's a variation on the tungsten carotene jig designed by my former Fly Fishing Team USA Teammate Mike Sexton". Then reading further in the description you can see how a reader would get the impression it's a variation you created/invented. I don't know where you wrote about it as a czech standby I just thought a mention of credit in the video (or at the very minimum the descrption) would be a common courtesy.
