If you're interested in a way to preserve your eggs longer try the water glassing method - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Xwa6A5wWj4.html (also did another video tasting the eggs after 10 months in the jar! - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G7Qon0DOaoY.html

Than you. I have about five 18 egg cartons in my fridge dated for expiry of 10-04-2023. I remembered part of what my mom told me, but I was not sure. I thank you (and Mom.)

Can you feed the floating eggs to the dogs? What other options are there for the floating eggs? Is it ok to compost them?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ Год назад
No apparently they're not safe for dogs once they've gone off ... no reason you couldn't compost them though!
@Spaceman429

How soon do you need to use the “sooner rather than later eggs”?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 2 года назад
It just varies a lot depending on the egg! If I find any like that I use them in baking within the next day or so, otherwise might pay to try floating them again if left for another few days (the only 100% way of knowing is by cracking them open, but trust me the smell is not pleasant if you get it wrong!)

Been using this for years. This past week I had almost a dozen horribly rotten eggs out of 12 dozen. I always test eggs and wash as I need them. How exactly did these pass the float test? When I say rotten,I mean brown putrid “whites” and green black moody yolks. I’m traumatized. I use a light now to see inside of them.
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ Год назад
Ewwww yes I've cracked one of those open before! Takes forever for the smell to leave the kitchen too lol ... not sure how they'd pass the float test but I guess there's always exceptions to the rule!

If you float test the eggs do they lose their bloom?
@CheaperWaysNZ

Yes that's the only thing - so you'd still want to use them fairly soon! I generally just put them in the fridge and use over the next week.

Yes... that's informative and all fine and dandy... but is the "stale" egg inedible for cooking or scrambling? There is one video where a guy ate year old eggs and apparently didn't die... so do you have scientific EVIDENCE that eating eggs that float are Unfit or deadly for consumption or is this just an old Wives Tale?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 2 года назад
I'm certainly no scientist, but have cracked open the odd rotten egg myself and can vouch for how much they stink out the kitchen 😂 ... some of the floaters might be borderline fine but it's up to the individual if they want to risk it - it's just an indication of how old they are, as the air sacks inside get bigger as they age. If it floats and you're still keen I'd crack it into a cup before cooking just in case! I have eaten 10 month old eggs myself but only after using the "water glassing" method that I also did a video on.
@vinzent001
@vinzent001 2 года назад
floating can also note that an egg is fertilized and unless you are accustomed to opening eggs with baby bird bits in it, i would avoid anything floating unless your trying to hatch. and thanks for the video CW-NZ was very helpful.

did not work for me
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 2 года назад
Oh what went wrong? Bad one sunk to the bottom? The reason this is a good indication is the older the egg is the bigger the air sac inside gets, which is why it gets bouyant when it's older ... I guess there's always exceptions with every rule!

Hey, thanks for the comment - just to put your mind at ease the actual wings themselves don't get clipped - just the tips of the feathers on one wing, which stops them from gaining too much height so they can't fly right over 6 foot fences etc - it's quite a common practice and if done properly doesn't hurt them at all (a bit like trimming your hair or nails), good for keeping them safe when there's pigs etc in the next paddock that could do them some harm 😊

If an egg floats right on top & does circles, it may be a duck's egg, right? 🦢🦆
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 6 месяцев назад
As far as I've heard they act in a similar way as chicken's eggs in that the fresher they are the more likely to sink - I'm no expert on duck eggs though so might have to look that one up!
