EICMA 2023: Kove 800X 4K
This is my video from the Kove stand at the EICMA 2023 show in Milan, Italy in November 2023.
I first found Kove at the show last year, and off the back of seeing the 450 Rally, I ordered one. So far, this seems to be a good decision. So I was interested in visiting them this year and having a good and proper look at the Kove 800X, 450RR and the other models on display.
I continue to be impressed (even if the 165Kg is a little optimistic for the 800X Rally. If it is accurate, I shall post an apology here!)
Thanks for watching!

We need to remember that BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM had far more resources than Kove and could have made these bikes that we've been begging them to make for over a decade and they chose not to, preferring to sell us their heavy and expensive mid size and full size adventure bikes.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 8 месяцев назад
Yup. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds, especially with new offerings from Royal Enfield and CFMoto in this space. I know they aren’t Rally bikes, but they will be cheaper and far more accessible and road friendly which is what people may be looking for.
@veedub1762

I disagree: look at the Yamaha T7 Tenere and tell me they haven’t just copied that. I do, however, agree that most other brands should have catered for the ‘simpler’ side of the market a long time ago.
@Liberty4Ever
@Liberty4Ever 7 месяцев назад
@@veedub1762 - I didn't realize the Tenere 700 had three entries in the Dakar Rally this year and all three finished. People have purchased the T7 for serious off road adventure riding because manufacturers wouldn't make the bike we *really* want but they always upgrade the suspension, get an aftermarket exhaust hanger so it doesn't snap on the first big bump, etc.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 7 месяцев назад
@@veedub1762 I think the T7 started out simple, but was still quite heavy (202kg I think) with poor suspension. I know most folks that it mattered to upgraded and now Yamaha have the T7 extreme edition. They’ve also added electronics and the price has risen accordingly. I think the Kove is lighter and with more power, but I think the price will determine where it sits. If it’s cheaper, particularly if it’s significantly cheaper than the T7, then if you think a copy is making a bike with more power, less weight and better components for a lower price then I can see why you think it is. I’m not so sure, but that’s just my opinion.
@veedub1762
@veedub1762 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment. I was referring to the 800 ADV from the video, which looks like they took the T7 design (including the 'dodgy' exhaust hanger you mentioned). Now the 450 Rally, that is an awesome bike and very much Kove's own. Two different bikes. I agree that the T7 needs modding for more serious offroad use. I own one.@@Liberty4Ever

There is a big difference in thinking between these two brands. CF moto builds nice looking bikes, low price, well equipped. With KOVE, it is all about saving weight. Kove 800x standard is 183kg ,and cf moto 800mt is 231kg.. For any serious adv rider, this can be a big difference

yeah, i don't care about the massive heavyweights, this would be about as heavy as i would go personally, so far as cf moto bikes though, i really like the look of the MTX 800 concept(ktm 790 in a new dress) and the MT? 450- these are the reason i mention CF as both look great for someone like me - oh and the MTX is definitely not thinking different to this 800x - they are both targeting the same audience 🙂, their big tourers look sweet but interest me about as much as DE800 or gS , tiger etc, none basically

The single most important change on that 450 Dakar bike is the new engine (which I guess will be available on the street version too). I believe its head is loosely based on MY21+ CRF450R, but Kove managed to simplify that Unicam design even further (CRF450R head has two axles for mounting rocker arms, one for the exhaust and the other for intake finger followers; Kove eliminated the intake side axle by mounting the finger followers onto the exhaust side axle instead). To be honest the price bump on the race model of only roughly €5k is kind of to my surprise, considering all those exotic materials they used to produce some of the parts and the engine being built from scratch (in contrary to the current engine, which is a modified version of an existing design).

Kove have a bigger range than I thought, they already make the bigger KTM engines and are really stepping up with products and quality, but time will tell if they are going to stand the test of time especially here in Australia, or will they just remain a budget bike builder. Certainly adds some competition to the market as the world's top manufacturers go mad with the ADV bike scene. I agree that the big names refuse to listen to the market so Kove have kind of filled that void for the moment. I noticed the Kove 800X PRO has dual front discs whereas the standard only has a single front disc brake. Thanks for the video very good insight. It would be great to see some tests of these bikes in the near future when they become available. 👍😎🇦🇺

3:29 So the Rally/pro version has less weight and more power than the standard version. On one of the Italian channels, there was an interview with the president of Kove at EICMA, who, using the example of Kove 800x Rally, explained how they achieved such a low weight. They made everything they could out of aluminium, including for example the mirrors, which are always steel, parts of the frame, various clamps, literally everything they could was made from aluminium. In addition, from what I understood, the Rally version, has a different engine map with more power, around 90 horsepower. At the same time, it seems to me that with this more power map, the bike does not have road homologation in the EU so it will be sold with a standard map, with the potential to be unlocked after purchase. 9:18 I don't know if this will help anyone, but in Poland one dealer has given prices for several models. All prices include 23% VAT: 450RR - 32900 PLN 450 Rally - 42900 PLN 800x - 42900 PLN (no information which version )
@andreafurlan4369
@andreafurlan4369 8 месяцев назад
Correct. The rally version will not have homologation but we'll be sold as a race bike. The engine will not have the catalyst and the silencer will be more free.In addition the rear subframe will be bolt-on and made form aluminium. Forks will be 49 mm closed cartridge. Prices will start from 8.990 eur for the base version to 12.500 for the rally. Very interesting.
@wiktor88
@wiktor88 8 месяцев назад
@@andreafurlan4369 Thanks for the additional information, I must have misunderstood the translation from Chinese to Italian and then to English :) Without the catalytic converter the engine map won't matter, the Rally version will certainly not have EU homologation. Also, the lack of a catalytic converter shows where further kilos were saved, probably about 3-4kg.

Very interesting Kove review! Many of us are very excited and hope to find a dealer with the bikes in the USA. I'm most interested in the 800X but the 500X looks pretty good too. The big thing for me is the weight, the real independently confirmed weight, ready to ride with or without gas. It would have been nice if they had followed KTM's thinking with low mounted fuel tanks because makes a big difference in how heavy the bike feels when you ride it, and especially when you have to pick it up...
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 8 месяцев назад
I look forward to being able to try one. Someone else mentioned that the Rally is so much lighter because it was an aluminium alloy frame instead of steel, which I guess would account for a 20kg difference.
@JagLite
@JagLite 8 месяцев назад
@@PeakMotorcycles The frame is probably some of the weight difference but the steel frame is probably under 35 lbs and an alloy frame would be not much under half of that so there has to be a lot of other much lighter parts used. Yup, saw that. Not sure which I’d go for… maybe the standard. The rally version has weight savings wherever possible, which is great, but the standard comes with tubeless wheels, a double disk at the front (maybe needed for the extra weight?) and set up more as an adventure bike. It’s still quite light for its class, though not as light as the Rally.

Do you recall who the 'somebody' is? Was it a competitor who is worried about losing business?

I've left the show i'm afraid, though the bike they had on display looks like the same model as last year. I have a UK spec 450 Rally at home. Do you know what, (if anything?) was changed for EU homologation? If you do, I can check my bike for those things.

The problem with prices is that they vary from country to country and they change over time too (but I can’t go back and re-edit the video for price changes). The best place to ask is the importer in your country. When prices are available they will know what the on the road price will be with local taxes and registration costs. You have my apologies.

If they price it right it might be a good bike. Few comments that I have - T700 weight the same dry ~186kg, it has less power though, at least on a paper. And here I would really like to see somebody put Kove 450 on Dyno to verify 51HP claim, which is great claim, but form videos I have seen a lot of people complain that it doesn't feel like 51HP, so really waiting for someone to do dyno run. Additionally it seems that OEM 800 skid plate is attached directly to engine - which isn't ideal if you are doing any kind of non-paved roads. But if the bike is popular enough aftermarket might come to rescue - similar to Transalp, that doesn't have any decent mounting points from factory.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for that. I’ll see if I can dyno my 450. As for the bash guard, it is an unusual mounting, but then the Aprilia Tuareg has it bolted to the exhaust which I thought wasn’t great but I’ve yet to see any complaints of a broken exhaust from a big hit on the bash guard.

I understand that, but it is also quite difficult, when so many things 'made' by other countries are manufactured in China.... Apple make the iPhone and Macbook pro's over there. Even phones made elsewhere often use chips from China. Bikes made in other countries also have components or even steel as a raw material from China, so it's quite hard to know.

Yamaha Tenere 700 become the benchmark on every mid-capacity engine (500-999 cc) adventure motorcycle released by other manufacturer. IMO the low-middle-heavy weight adventure bike category are incorrect, we should categorize it by it's engine capacity, then it's capability to do light to heavy/very technical off-road course.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 7 месяцев назад
What else would you put in the same category as the T7? Tuareg 660 perhaps? KTM 690? Transalp 750 maybe? The T7 might be a benchmark, but is it the top in anything?
@faisalarh
@faisalarh 7 месяцев назад
@@PeakMotorcycles yes, I’m agree the Tuareg 660, KTM 790 and TransAlp should be in the mix, add the VStrom 850DE, BMW F750/850GS. I guess the T7 hit a sweet spot between on/off-road capability, weight, good engine performance, reliability, and it’s engine sound :) Add the relatively simple electronic (I think only available ABS ON/OFF), no engine mode/riding mode, the pricing relatively lower than the competitor on the basic model.

@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 8 месяцев назад
Yup, valid points. My experience of owning one of the early 450 Rally’s is that parts are available now. I guess their success will determine the longevity of that service, though the engine parts are widely used across many bikes that share the Zhongshen 450 single, so that should be easy. Fuel tanks, bodywork etc. might be the challenge long term but we shall see.
