It's probably about time smoke alarms were written into BS7671. In most domestic situations the only bloke who goes in there with an informed eye is gonna be a spark so it just makes sense to me. I don't put any code down but if there's anything wrong about them I'll still list it in observations but just put an NA. While we're on the subject, cpcs not brought forward into the alarm is common where they used to have a different brand and I see a fair few where they use the cpc as the interlink too. People think the smoke doesn't need the earth as it's class 2 but it's the circuit in the fabric of the building that needs it otherwise the OCPD ain't gonna do much if someone puts a screw through the cable.

I believe that even in the NICEIC snags and solutions.That they mention it is okay to use the CPC as the interlink. I’ve only ever seen that on another podcast so I don’t know how true that is.Crazy especially when they sell radio bases

I’m pretty sure the Regs state Green / yellow coloured cable should not be used for any other purposes

@@rossmurdoch7870 this only applies to single core green/yellow cables. The green/yellow core of a multicore cable can be oversleeved and repurposed. 514.4.2

Very educational video Will! Much appreciated! What would you do in the case of that borrowed neutral scenario- knowing that if you change to an RCBO board it’ll probably start tripping out when turned on? Cheers

The screw covers for switches on lighting circuits with no earth; while ideal, are not essential. C3 mate.

How do you charge for the inspection - each job is different?So much time spent doing post mortems?
@ElectricianTV
@ElectricianTV 8 месяцев назад
It depends on the size of the building and the size of the house. If it’s a three bedroom, then I can normally gather it will take half a day for two of us if it’s anything larger than it will probably be a day or so on and so on, obviously we charge by half a day and a full day. If I’m not confident of being accurate of how long it will take to go on a day rate and it will be specified before normally if it’s anything bigger than a four bedroom I would go and have a look before the test

With regards to extension leads. Isn't that something you can't really comment on considering its not part of the electrical installation? Things that are plugged into sockets aren't to be recorded on an eicr?
@rossmurdoch1886
@rossmurdoch1886 3 года назад
Good stuff Will tons to think about here.One point to add Green and yellow should only be used as CPC or bonding IET 18th ed 514.4.2 "The bi-colour combination green and yellow shall be used exclusively for identification of a protective conductor and this combination shall not be used for any other purpose." There is a specific exception for PEN conductors which can have blue over-marking at terminals , but the above is pretty clear for the vast majority of applications Table 51 gives all the accepted colours

Water bonding. If it is fixed to a point, say near stop cock. How is the bond effective if plastic pipe is used around the property mixed with copper? Do you rely on the water to carry back to ground in the event of a fault passed a section of plastic? Nothing more than a DIY monkey here but one bond with mixture of plastic & copper makes no sense to me

14:10 Why might 'exporting' the earth from the main building to a garage be a problem?
@ElectricianTV
@ElectricianTV 3 года назад
If the supply characteristics are TNCS then you are not supposed to export the Earth out of the equipotential zones.
@andrewcadby
@andrewcadby 3 года назад
@@ElectricianTV That is a common myth of our trade. Please can you explain why you think it is a problem, and also can you please reference some form of regulation to back the statement up?
@ElectricianTV
@ElectricianTV 3 года назад
Answering without regulations and being out of my bed for five minutes. I would say is to do with pen fault and being out of the taken equipotential zones of the original building.
@andrewcadby
@andrewcadby 3 года назад
@@ElectricianTV I looked into this a while back, and concluded that it's a myth. There is nothing in BS7671 prohibiting taking the TN-C-S earth to outbuildings, apart from a few special locations/situations. I cannot find any evidence that DNO's prohibit it either. Engineering Recommendation G12 ( basically guidance for DNO's explaining where they should and should not provide PME earthing) doesn't prohibit it, again aside from a few special cases, that largely mirror BS7671. It may be a myth, but it's a persistent one - it's been doing the round for decades now.
@davideyres955
@davideyres955 Год назад
@@andrewcadbyI’m not a sparky but as I understand it it depends on if you have any extraneous conductive parts like copper pipes or structural steel in to the ground. They could be at a different potential from the earth that is connected to the main incoming earth so possible problem. So no conductive parts earth from main building is fine. Pretty sure there is a John ward video about this somewhere. But like I said I’m no sparky so could be wrong.
