The opening credits for the pilot episode. Mark Hamill of "Star Wars" fame played eldest son David in this episode. Hamill unsuccessfully tried to get out of his contract in anticipation of a feature film career. Shortly before the second episode was due to begin filming, Hamill was in a serious car accident and had to be replaced, by Grant Goodeve.

Yes, Diana was wonderful as Joan. Absolutely brilliant :)

In the pilot episode, other actors played Tommy and Nancy. Willie Aames and Dianne Kay came on-board later, along with Grant Goodeve.

and also Diana Hyland that played the mom in the pilot and then did the first four episodes died after the third episode premiered her cancer had returned and she died and John Travolta's arms who is her boyfriend at the time and Dick Van Patten said he never knew it was that bad you know and it's unfortunate cuz I wonder what it would have been like if she would have continued with the series the entire time I like that but it would have been different to see Joan through the entire series

The show was never the same after her death...nothing against Betty Buckley (she's currently doing the national tour of the HELLO, DOLLY! revival which Bette Midler played on Broadway)

@@tomservo56954Betty Buckley was phenomenal as Abby, warm and real. An incredible actress.

I think Mark was quite good as David - he actually had sort of a rebellious attitude, much more so than Goodeve's David.

The pilot isn't a TV movie - just a one-hour episode that is included in the syndication package. But you're right - Hamill, Beck, and English appeared in the pilot only.

Looking back, we'll never know had Mark Hamill stayed on as David for the show, how his acting career would have turned out differently. If I recall right, Hamill's movie career - outside of Star Wars - was not noteworthy. His job playing David on "Eight" would've kept him busy during that time and maybe help the show's ratings thanks to the attention he got on Star Wars.

Still better than ending up a Christian "celebrity", which by the 1990's is all Grant Goodeve had going for him, hosting inspirational movies on some religious channel.

This should be on DVD, whoever owns the rights to these shows should get this going now. I don't know why this hasn't come out yet on DVD?

It was filmed in 1976, though, long before the rest of the first season episodes were shot. I just happened to be online when you responded, so this might be my quickest You Tube reply yet.

The pilot-'Never Eat Nectarines Since Juice May Dispense'--a mnemonic for remembering the names of the Bradford children--the youngest to the oldest.

What about "T" for Tommy? There were 8 kids.

Actually - "Star Wars" began filming in March of 1976, before the "Eight is Enough" pilot was shot. However, if Mark had stayed with the series, they would have had to work around his filming schedule for the sequels.

@SHC87 Actually, on January 11th, 1977 Mark Hamill was in a car accident. This happened one day before he was to shoot his final scenes in Star Wars. A double was used for the necessary Landspeeder pick-up shots. His acceident was between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

This has actually aired many times, most recently on PAX TV in the early 2000's. I think it was originally a TV movie, with Kimberly Beck playing Nancy and Chris English playing Tommy.

Also Starring: Luke Skywalker as "David".

@Juliaflo My bad--It should have been Never Try Eating Nectarines Since Juice May Dispense--memorizing the Bradford children, youngest to eldest. Never=Nicholas Try=Tommy Eating=Elizabeth Nectarines=Nancy Since=Susan Juice=Joannie May=Mary Dispense=David

Hey, it seems Kimberly Beck-- who played Nancy Bradford in the pilot-- also made a guest appearance on The Brady Bunch. Too bad she's remembered for neither.

That's right... it was only an hour long. Kimberly Beck is still in the business.

And Chris English played Tommy and Kimberly Beck played Nancy. Four of the actors/actresses from the pilot were gone within a few episodes of the show's premiere.

u-said-what? what happened to Chris English
@jlee9735
@jlee9735 7 лет назад
u-said-what? I recently bought season 1 of Eight is Enough from watch the pilot I didn't see any any problem with the original Tommy or Nancy or will David Mark Hamill we know Star Wars was fixing to come out so I read that he wanted to get out of his contract and ABC would not let him out of his contract but he got in a car accident and they had to replace him but Christopher English you don't really see much of them in the pilot so I don't see why they wanted to get rid of them and I thought he was good and Kimberly back was great is Nancy even though Dana K look more like Joan the mom on the show but I wonder whatever happened to Christopher English I know Kimberly Beck continued acting but I wonder whatever happened to him Chris English and also Kimberly back I would love to go to a convention if they were there and ask them how they felt about being replaced and I know Chris English never did another acting thing I've looked him up he never did anything after doing the pilot and I hope he's doing well the Kimberly back did continue to act so but I still don't see the reason why they need to be replaced but that's just my opinion ABC made the decision to replace them and the show went on in a course we all know that Diana Hyland that played the mom only did the TV pilot and four episodes and then she passed away so then they have to recast her The Following season with it a new character called Abby who became their step mom but I wonder if Diana would have lived but the show could have been because I thought she was beautiful nothing against Betty Buckley because I thought she was gorgeous too but I really wonder what would have happened if if Diana Hyland would have lived for the whole 5 Seasons of Eight is Enough how you know it would have went and God love her and rest her soul and Betty Buckley is still acting I know Dick Van Patten past Whaley couple years ago that I was very sad to hear that a lot of this people on the show after the show ended had some of them did some other movies and TV shows but a lot of them went and left in the show business industry so but it was a good show I remember watching it as a kid and we watched it every week that Charlie's Angels another show that I loved still do

Grant Goodeve was much better than Mark Hamill!
@jimmyk5769
@jimmyk5769 14 лет назад
@SHC87 You are mistaken. Mark Hamill's accident happened right after he filmed Star Wars. That's why his face looks different in Empire Strikes Back (and also why they had Luke's face get damaged by the snow creature in the opening minutes of Empire). This info is easy to look up now that we have the internet, by the way.
@scottyclayton5604

@jimmyk5769, Actually, no. The snow creature scene had nothing to do with the accident. George Lucas himself has confirmed this. This info is easy to look up now that we have the internet, by the way.

While it was totally generic, I enjoy seeing how much of the architectural layout and city planning from the mid-'70s hasn't really changed in 45 years. So much stuff around us now was already figured out decades ago. They just slap a fresh coat of paint on it every once in a while.

Well for one thing, Grant Goodeve would n ot have sang the theme which signaled to me that the show had finally jumped the shark.

He started singing for Season 3. It ran 5 seasons. So I do not agree.
