Some actors do get type cast. Up to that point Hamill was in a lot of tv shows and pobably not making much money I am sure he was pretty unknown until Star Wars. He made 650,000 for the first one plus 1/4 per cent on the back end. Harrison Ford was not that well know either and got paid way less than Hamill. No one knows how much Fischer got paid but probably less the Ford or Hamill. But she did get 1/4 per cent of the back end. Despite the movies making a ton with the way hollywood accounting is you never know how that worked out. I don't know if Ford or Hamill got a piece from merchandising. Merchandising was just coming in to its own starting in the 70's with bands selling shirts. Today evey is a brand.

So in order to get out of his contract, the production company insisted that he had to be seriously injured in a car accident? And he went along with it? Were the authorities ever notified about this? What happened?

When you look back on Mark's career during that period of time, you THINK leaving EIE was the right choice... but can you name ANY films he did other than Star Wars thats memorable? Exactly. If you had to ask Mark today if he had to change one thing in his acting career, I will bet he would have stayed to play David until the show ended. And also had he stayed, he probably would have landed better movie roles than the ones he received during his SW years. Keep in mind, I'm not knocking on Mark here (I always liked him)... just pointing out he could have been remembered for multiple roles rather than being typecast in simply one.

(about the same sort of work--mainly nothing steady, just like Hamill aside from Star Wars. But I am glad he took over the David role--he's a better singer anyway.

In the following months and years, he had all kinds of plastic surgery (which accounts for all the pancake makeup in the Holiday Special.) For Empire Strikes Back, they took pains to hide the extent of his facial changes. But in Jedi, you can see immediately he looks very different than he did in New Hope. Don't get me wrong, he was still attractive, but not as hot as he was in this, or New Hope.

True, but that's because George put Mark against the significantly more handsome and charming Harrison Ford, so Mark is often overlooked aesthetically. Plus, the character of Luke is one of bumbling adolescence while Han was a sophisticated worldly man.

@@BPoweredLove Funny because I always found Mark Hamill to be more handsome than Ford. Ford imo is more charming than “pretty-faced”, while young Mark had the prettier face imo. Depends on what people define as handsome though. Ford was considered ruggedly handsome while Mark was boyishly handsome so can they even be compared aesthetically? People back in the day preferred rugged masculine looks, hence why ford was considered “more handsome” I guess.

@@Sirrom5 -The accident robbed his pretty face. The plastic surgery was the best they could do to repair it back in 1977. If it happened now, the plastic surgery techniques could restore his face a lot better than back then.

@@SilkyShish Probably. I have just fixed my previous comment. However I remember to have a very rare photo of Mark which seems to be made just after the accident... and his face has the same outlines. Just his mouth appears to be scarred. Then, I have another pic probably made by Carrie Fisher about Mark and Harrison where the viewer can see a circle around Mark's face in which appears that such a portion of the face was removed to make surgery operation on the nose and other any of his face's parts. I noted that also his eyebrows position changed besides his original slim Greek nose and mouth. In that time another actress went from surgery operation. She was Sissy Spacek. I had the pics of the comparison of her faces. Two different persons. Search for the comparison online if you want. Question is also that Mark Hamill has never fixed those flows. He still has the nose flatted and pushed to the left side and a right nostril which is larger than the normal. His nose lost the philtrum on the base of the mouth (indeed the space between his current nose and his mouth seem longer than the original), he lost the root nose able to make deep his look and so on. If I get the pic I got, I can confirm that just after the accident Mark appears just scarred on the mouth. So I assume something intervened to change his face further.

@@Sirrom5 - I watched a documentary on Mark. And if you find this musical variety Christmas show the Star Wars cast did back in 1978, you can see Mark had to have a lot of heavy make up on his face. It was to hide the scars as this variety show was made shortly following his accident. The "Empire Strikes Back" wrote a scene into the movie where Luke's face is injured in order to provide some plot as to why Mark's face had changed so much from the first movie. Too bad. He was so pretty. I wonder how his face would have aged if this had not happened to him or if he would of had a more successful career in more leading roles. He became more of a character actor unlike Harrison. Hollywood during that time was far less accepting of actors in lead roles unless, they fit a certain physical mold. Mark was still cute post accident, but not as handsome as before. His brother was interviewed in the documentary and you can sort see through him how Mark would have aged if this had not happened to him. At the end of the day, it's just looks and more importantly he survived.

A very underrated show. definitely not your typical family show. where at the end, everything was good and cherry at the end of the episode.

Actually, that's not true. Mark himself denied it in an interview or chat, I forget which. He said he'd been a working actor for years by then; he had his own apartment. He was, and is, friends with Robert Englund, and it's true that Robert tried out for SW, but then, just about every actor between the ages of 16 and 40 tried out for SW.

1984 was a good year for Englund, both the start of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and a major role in the tv series V.

Andrew Lawson I loved the show when it ran . But I hear your thoughts. It was an excellent show and cast despite the loss of Diana Hyland but it may have even been better if she was alive. Betty Buckley was good as Abby but Diana Hyland seemed extraordinarily beautiful and fit the role well.

Nope. Me too. Mark is FANTASTIC as Luke Skywalker.. but NOT David Bradford. He definitely was NOT a method actor here. He wasn’t “into it”.

The mom played by Diana Hyland only appeared in 4 episodes before she tragically died of breast cancer in her then boyfriend John Travolta's arm's. Rather than recast her role her character also passed suddenly. This spun the show in a new direction by making Tom a grieving widower with eight kids. That didn't last too long before Abby was introduced as Tom's new love interest and new wife. Mark appeared in the pilot before making Star Wars. Having got his foot in the door with films Mark wanted out when Eight is Enough was picked up for the fall season of 1977. His efforts to get out of the show were futile and he resigned himself to doing the series. Fate would intervene when Mark got into a auto accident the night before he was to begin working on the series again. With Mark seriously injured and the production schedule demanding they move ahead Mark got his wish and Grant Goodeve was recast as David.

They also recast the roles of Nancy, Tommy, and Donna (Tom's secretary). Dick Van Patten said he replaced the original actor who played the dad about 2-3 days into filming when they decided they wanted a better comedic actor for the role. Lots of changes happened quickly on this show.

I disagree. I didn’t “feel” the same energy or sincerity as Grant’s version. I watched this show every week. I was the same age as Nicholas. And as a little kid, I totally admired Grant’s version of ‘David’.. he was so kind and loving to his youngest brother, that I always wished that I had an oldest brother like him.

As a young girl at the time I couldn't judge acting chops so Grant was good enough but wished Mark Hamill could've stayed if Star Wars hadn't arrived. But as an ADULT woman Mark is the BETTER actor hands down, why he got movie and Broadway roles and where the hell is Goodeve?
