I actually like the thought of Eilonwy just pretending to be a princess... It's natural for children to put themselves in heroic roles like that, and honestly I would do the same if I were her. I agree with your theory, you make a lot of good points and I enjoyed your video!

One requirement for a character to be a “Disney princess” is that the movie they were in did well at the box office or made a lot of money. This is why kida from the lost city of Atlantis is not considered a Disney princess even though she was a princess turned queen in a Disney movie.

There was an article shortly after Disney bought Fox, thus pulling Anastasia into their film catalog, and there are two other categories to be deemed a "Disney Princess" To be a Disney princess; 1) the movie must have been a box office smash (excluding Kida), 2) can't be dark or disturbing to children (excludes Eilonwy), and 3) the design can't be based on a real person (Giselle from Enchanted was based on Amy Adams). Despite these in-house rules I've always thought of Kida as a Disney princess since seeing Atlantis and it's direct-to-video sequel

I just only mention the first one because I thought might have been the reason Eilowyn was disqualified. there is one more classification which was the princess can’t be an animal like kiara from lion king. But I agree that kida should be considered a disney princess. She and Atlantis are so underrated.

@@itachi91692 In general it doesn't matter if the heroine was a princess or not to be a Disney Princess. And not every princess is an official Disney Princess . Maybe you'll see a non royal heroine as a Disney Princess or a queen as a Disney Princess. It doesn't matter .

@@abdthesnowking4528 please don’t put words in my mouth. I never said that they HAD to be royalty to be one. Technically a Disney Princess needs to check off enough of the points in order to be officially considered one by Disney. Kida just didn’t check off enough of the points to be one part of the official line up. So in essence in order for a character to be considered part of the Official “Disney Princess” Line-Up by Disney, it does matter.

Eilonwy was called a Sculley Maid as an insult in the book of "The Black Cauldron" I think it was some guy that said it though.

The books go into a lot more detail about that. In the books, Prydain is a nation divided into smaller kingdoms, but without a High King acting as ruler of the whole nation, the kingdoms have turned to war and many kingdoms have fallen. Eilonwy's kingdom fell when she was small, and Flewder's (he's a king by birth, but pretends to be a bard because bards have more fun. Who knew, right?) is on the verge of collapse.

I looked back at the movie just to be sure. Interesting how she never does mention her home or family. All she says is that the Horned King stole her, only because he thought her bubble thing could tell him about the cauldron. So, when it comes to the Disney version, she could very well just be a maid posing as a princess. But regardless, she's one of the few things I like about this movie.

I was so used to Disney using princess characters that I literally thought she was a princess, until I realized years later that she was pretending. Which, when you get right down to it, is what both Taran and Eilonwy are doing, 'pretending'.

They could make this into a series. Just have 10-15 episodes per season, for three or four seasons, and it'll flesh out the characters.

That could actually work out quite well, provided it's made properly. The movie may have been considered a failure when it came out, but since then it's become a cult classic, meaning it now has a much larger fan base that would love to see more of it. A series based on it could easily outdo the movie, maybe even to the point that it's considered to be their best series in years.

I actually loved Black Cauldron. c: And Eilonwy has always been one of my favorite princesses. Interesting theory that she might not actually be one! I did find it strange how she was pretty much ignored by the kingdom itself. Surely SOMEONE would have noticed if the princess went missing

With the release date expected for 2024, I think there's a lot of risk of Disney cancelling a live action movie. I'm afraid of how they twist it up since they haven't proven successful in handling big book franchises before (they dumped Chronicles of Narnia 2 movies in!), and with the way they've handled the cartoon, it's going to be hard to sell it to younger audiences unless they get everything lined up perfectly. Plus, Disney likes to model their live action films after their animations, which would not work well here! But, maybe they can hook in Jerry Bruckheimer or Peter Jackson to handle the project and turn it into something amazing! :)

I loved The Black Cauldron on its own, and it's a shame it didn't do well because it wasn't bad as its own entity. Yes it wasn't close to the original, but on its own, it was a decent film. I do agree that Eilonwy isn't an actual princess, probably a practicing mage undercover as a maid of some sort. To me though, she definitely deserves a spot in the Disney Princess line for being a courageous character. I would also buy a Hen Wen plushy as well! She is so cute and deserved more recognition.

Loved the theory. It makes a lot of sense. 4:03 - 4:56 Well...technically speaking, there are official requirements to get the title of Disney Princess. The Super Carlin Brothers talk about it in detail. But basically, they are... 1. Have a primary role in the story 2. Must be a human 3. Must not premire in a squeal 4. either born royal, married royal or committed a great act of heroism (which is how Mulan got on the list along with Tink and Esmeralda in the past) 5. Box office success ( said movie can't bomb or over shadow the other ladies in the line up; so successful, but not too successful) She's not included because of money. Plain and simple. The movie didn't make it's money back and was too dark, so Disney shoved the movie into the background and focused on the other ladies for the sake of their image. It's the same thing that happened to Kida from Atlantis, though more so because of the money, and a lot of the other possible candidates. It sucks, but from a business prospective it makes sense. Why throw money at something at a movie made back in the 80s that bombed and most little kids never heard of? It doesn't seem like a smart investment. I'm not saying your theory isn't true. But I just don't think Disney didn't include her because she "wasn't a princess" at all.

I feel the same way with Kida from Atlantis the lost empire, The move is underrated and Disney's first attempted at Sci-fi I know it didn't do well but Kida is a princess and even becomes queen at the end! P.S do you have any theories on this movie?

The Theory is sound, but I think it's over thinking. Disney didn't think that hard. Likely assuming either people read the book or they could make sequels or something. The Black Cauldron was an attempt to grow beyond Disney's limitations, which failed. Like chocolate covered trout, it doesn't work. So as a Failure, Disney buries it to forget. Like a non-racist Song of the South. The Princess line is less about Princesses and more a way to sell Dolls together. Which is why Elsa and Anna are not technically Princesses as they can sell toys on their own. Including their own section of the shelves. Which is why the too haven't been coranated by Disney. Or why non-princesses have been and are in the line.

Oh, for the money and huge production time Disney invested in this film, they really did think about everything. The problem was that they had too many hands stirring the pot, and horrible feedback from test audiences, until the movie looked more like a Katarai ball over the movie they wanted to make. It also didn't help that the initial concept artists gave Disney sketches go advanced that there was no way animators could reproduce it - so from day one there was fighting. With the Princess line, yes, money is the bottom line, they they've added and subtracted characters for unclear reasons. Like, I get Tinkerbell could be released from the line, because the Fairies line was coming up. But, they let go of Esmeralda and let her fall into Disney obscurity. Vanellope was also ignored for the line because she doesn't fit the model they're selling to little girls (dolls all roughly the same size and age), poor Vanellope just isn't fancy enough to join the party. Elsa, Anna, and Moana will all eventually end up included in the franchise when their merchandise stops selling so well on it's own. But, with all the money invested into the Black Cauldron, you would think that Disney would want to make that back on merchandising (you mention Song of the South, and how many millions has Disney World/Disneyland made on selling photos and gifts from Splash Mountain?).

This was one of the attempts to save the studio... which ended with The Great Mouse Detective doing well enough to start the Path to Little Mermaid. (Given this and the Snow Queen/Frozen, maybe your next theory should be is HCA is good luck for Disney). It failed and with all of the money they spent, Disney doesn't like to bring it up, it seems. Also the 'appearance' of darker elements made them avoid it for images reasons. So with many reasons, they tend to avoid putting it out there. If it made money or was less dark, who knows? Maybe it also explains why she's mentioned as a Maid and a Princess, so either or both could be true depending on if it sells. Seeing if Princesses are still profitable. Also how many these days remember Splash Mountain is from Song of the South? Wonder what other lines they could sell? Disney Villains dolls? Disney Pets, with plush toys of all your favourite Disney Animals.

I tend to agree; Disney throwing money at the Black Calderon won't make any sense. It's like investing in a business that went bankrupt a few times before. It's just a stupid idea from a business stand point and seems like something doomed to fail. Not to mention the vast majority of little kids would have no clue what it is since it was a movie that bombed in the 80s. It's kinda like how the Gundam and Devilman franchises have cognitive dissonance about being both anti war while banking on figurine money on the weapons that cause said war to begin with or fighting in general--it all comes down to the money. To be fair, I would love to see a line of Disney Villains and Animals.

Cory2000 Disney should make Villain dolls, I've already got Jafar, Gaston, Mother Gothel, Evil Queen, and Maleficent. I wish they made the Shadow man, Ratcliffe, Shan Yu. They should rerelease Lady Termaine, Anastasia, Drizella, Vanessa, and Ursula.

It'd be really cool if The Black Cauldron got a live-action remake. The animated movie had a lot of potential, but the creators botched it during production. We should all put up a petition to give it another chance! Plus it'd be great to see The Horned King again, haha.

+ Translation of the book title: The Chronicles Of Britan. Prydain is WELSH for Briton. There are references to The Mabonogi in this movie, and that makes me so happy! The Calderon & the horned is a reference to Branwen Daughter Of Llur & Celtic gods, with King Arthur mixed in. Here's A Fact: Celtic languages don't share the same grammar systems as latin based languages such as French and English. The LL is a sounding letter in the welsh alphabet, we have certain sounds letters that if u get thous down u can pick up the language slightly easier.

The black cauldron was my 2nd favorite movie when I was a kid. I loved it. My first favorite was the Swan Princess (I'd love a theory on that if you're willing, seriously, I've seen it so many times). Then Black Cauldron. I remember my mom getting frustrated because she couldn't find any merch for me. Then came the Sword in the Stone. And finally Pocahontas. My parents actually had to organize a trip to Jamestown because 4 year old me was obsessed. Eventually Mulan dethroned them all as my favorite animated movie. It's hard though because I love animated movies and most of them will always hold a special place for me.

Disney should redo this movie for its more mature original attended audience who would understand the severity and history of the story at hand. Not that the first was unwatchable, I loved it as a kid, the black cauldron, sword in the stone and don bluth thumblina were the only thing I remember watching while recovering from my heart surgery when I was 4years old. They are not garbage they are my treasures.

she could still be a princess... I mean Kida to is LITERALLY a princess but is also snubbed by Disney (same with Giselle from Enchanted). The criteria to be a Disney princess is more than just "have the title in an Disney movie"; You MUST do well in box office but not too well that you outshine the other girls (see Frozen) You must be a main character in a Disney animated feature(which is why no Giselle). You must be born royal, marry royal or perform an act of absolute heroism (see mulan saving all of china). Also without Mulan or Pocahontas the Disney Princess line would've been exclusively white and racist until Tiana... so you can see why in the 90's they stretched things, made a new category and decided that "Daughter of the Chief" was at least equivalent to Princess. Plus it didn't hurt that both movies did really well.

It actually makes more sense for her to be a skullery maid, it would explain why she's free to move about the dungeon. Everyone else was tied up, but if she just "worked" there, she'd be allowed to roam around freely to due her duties.

The Horned King calls her a scullery maid after accurately describing all the main characters. She is not, and can not be a princess, the bubble is only in one part of the movie. It could have been a big plot twist, creating greater conflict than the whole movie does and distrust with her and finding out why she lied.

I'm actually one that argues that Pocahontas is a princess, because she's the equivalent for her area/people. But, I've gotten comments in videos where a LOT of people discount Moana and Pocahontas as princesses because their father's aren't kings, they're chieftains.

The reason Pocahontas isn't considered a princess by some is because Native American tribes are run like democracies where the chiefs are elected. Pocahontas is not set to lead her people after her father, although it's possible she could run for chief. Moana on the other is more of an equivalent to a princess because despite whether or not it's geographically accurate, in the film it's made clear that Moana will be the next chief and that the chiefs of the past have all been in Moana's blood line. Also by the end of the film Moana becomes the chief so that alone elevates her up to princess, or more accurately queen, status. A video on all the princesses and their royal titles would be really interesting!

Princess is a title and since they don't have that title in their culture Pocahontas and Moana technically aren't princess's.

When you relate the The Fangirl's struggles except with The hunchback of Notre Dame :') i know it's a dark as hell Disney movie but come one - at least a collector Esermalda and Quasimodo set!?!?!? they made the queen of hearts AND Captain Hook so pretty looking people getting dolls isn't a rule for Disney!!

Oh my glob THoND is one of my favorites! I was old enough to buy all those doll and a plushie Djahli back when the movie came out, and Esmeralda was one of the Disney Princesses for a short time! But, since they booted her out she's been very forgotten. Even when my daughter was wearing an Esmeralda costume at Disney World, most the employees didn't recognize it. She'd make such a designer gorgeous doll! 17" single or 13" coupled with Phoebus would be SO cute (I would be too sad to see her paired with Quasimodo since he loved her and she didn't feel the same way)! Gosh, now I need to make TWO petitions to Disney lol!

Totally! I was born in '97 so I'm over 20 years late to the Hunchback merch party haha It does suck when Disney makes a movie that might not be totally beloved or shown at Disney parks and nobody seems to recognize it :/ A cosplayer i know went as Sora from Kingdom Hearts for their Halloween event and only the Donald and Goofy knew who he was haha Oh yeah, either way a collector set with Esmeralda would look so beautiful! Maybe one is with Quasimodo during the festival of fools (maybe a friendship collection?) and the other in her actual clothes with Phoebus as a couples set. Either way it'd be a stunning set! Oh or imagine a Jim Hawkins collector doll too as Treasure Planet is one of my other favorite Disney movies! :D

The guy collector dolls are pretty hard to sell from what I've noticed. I guess people don't see them as pretty enough to buy, lol. But, Esmeralda in her red dress with Quasi would be cute. Maybe they'll do it someday, the THoND 25 anniversary isn't too far down the road after all. And they're starting to branch out more with their dolls - Robin hood, King Triton, Minnie Mouse, Sgt Calhoun, Mr. Incredible, soldier Mulan/Ping, so there's a chance they'll start reaching farther park in their catalog for more ideas. :)

It's one of those movies with great potential and just insane execution. I think this would have worked better as a live action movie with an older audience who could handle the more intense moments.

You know I really don't think the critics and the public EVER gave the Black Cauldron a chance! It really wasn't a bad film. The animation was stunning and the color palette was gorgeous.The critics gave The Dark Crystal a horrific time and even walked out of the premiere and everyone knows that film is a masterpiece! I think if Disney would have re- worked the story arc and the character plots i believe everything would have turned out for the better.

It’s been said here already and I agree, this could be made into a revamped miniseries. Gargoyles and the Dark Crystal Age of Resistance both have loyal followings, and they have a darker storyline than most Disney series out there. I'm perfectly fine with the "act of heroism" loophole added just to get Mulan in the Disney Princess line ;) Much more merch for me to enjoy for both my favorite Disney hero and my favorite historic/mythological hero~ (Since it's still relatively up in the air whether Mulan was just a folk story or based on real events, due to the lack of an official written history for that time period).

I absolutely loved Eilonwy as a kid. As a welsh kid that grew up in Britain, it made me feel seen in the small culture differences between my family and the British kids I was at school with and made me feel like I had someone who was an awful lot like me to look up too.

My rebuttal, Elanwee (I'm great at spelling Welsh names) the color purple is used in her attire, of which would be a rare and expensive color to wear to the point which was rare to find, even among the nobility of most nation states. The color purple is as rare as Pandas are in our current world. That was until the mid 19th century.

I never read the book. But I always assumed Eilonwy WAS indeed a Princess because they reference to her as "Princess" throughout the whole film. Even Princesses have casual attire. I'm sure she wasnt kidnapped while at a function in a ball gown. Why he called her a maid? No clue. But I dont think her backstory in the film is her pretending to be a Princess.

I just got the black cauldron in the mail today and I was wondering why he called her a scullery maid. But here is my theory. Either she was an actual princess but her parents were killed, her castle destroyed, her people enslaved or murdered. So she had no place to return to. Or she was the Horned Kings daughter but she was disowned by him and forced to work in the kitchens. So that explains why she was able to get into prisons and why she knew where the secret entrances were. Plus if she was the Horned Kings daughter, she would become the queen of his kingdom but she didn't want to continue his legacy or kingdom so she choose Taran over her people. Also back in the times I'm guessing the movie took place, people took disowning very seriously, so that would also explain why the king didn't say something like "my disgraced daughter" or something.

I had no idea that The Black Cauldron was based on a book series..I might have to go and check the series out. I ADORE the movie and I absolutely love Eilonwy... She 100% deserves to be a Disney princess. She's clever, she has attitude, she's charismatic and a little detail about her that I love, is that she's terrible at sewing.. cuz girls in those days were supposed to be good at things like that. I could probably go on about her forever... And another thing.. is it just me, or is the Horned King frikkin awesome.. he's a terrifying, ruthless villain and his voice is AWESOME.

Well, I guess it would make sense if Eilonwy wants a princess if she had no kingdom. But knowing the horned king maybe he destroyed her kingdom and EVERYONE in the kingdom. Maybe for a short time she was used as a scullery made by the horned king. It's just a thought

Nicolap CP sadly due to the flop of the money she will never be :( she was the first princess I looked up to as a child. Movies have to make a certain amount back and they have to be a main character (she's seen as a side) for them to be considered into the Disney princess line up.

I remember when I first saw this movie my child mind thought - she doesn't look like a princess - because of her clothes. Well, if I had seen other Disney Princesses in lavish outfits before... Even if they had modest outfits it was only part of the movie and they usually had multiple dresses... and she... the same dress throughout the entire movie.

the black cauldron was a really big flop it is in a way the movie that disney is trying to hide that is why there is no black cauldron merchandise. One reason it was such a big flop was because children were terrified of the horned king. Elonwy and Toron were in the parks at one point in time but are no longer there.

You see this sounds so true! Because if she really is a Princess, then she would've wore a beautiful dress, a tiara and magic inside her, and the movie should have ended with her leading Tarzan and Fllewwder to her Kingdom, instead of her just going nowhere with him and the old squib! It seems like Eilonwy is not a princess in Disney even though she actually is suppose to be, even though I do love Disney, but come on this is insane!

I read the books "The Chronicles of Prydain" by Lloyd Alexander a long time ago, but I remember clearly that Eilonwy was a princess from a dinasty of enchantresses, or at least the daughter of a witch princess who rebelled by fleeing with a commoner and marrying him. Eilonwy inherited her mother's magical powers, and would be transferred in the third book to her ancestral land to learn to use her magic. But Eilonwy's backstory in the Disney movie is absent, and all viewers know is that she's a princess, which has led audiences who haven't read the books to believe that Disney made her a royal just to fit the "Disney Princesses" brand.

The Black Cauldron was a mess of a film. If Disney was going to adapt its source material, it would have been better to make it a TV series, which wouldn't have been a bad idea. It could have had its place among Toon Disney, and been on the same level as Gargoyles.
