Ejections 014-15 - Mets and Cardinals Clear Benches After Yoan Lopez Buzzes Nolan Arenado Near Head

HP Umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Cardinals DH Nolan Arenado and 1B Coach Stubby Clapp for their roles in a Mets-Cards fight situation in St Louis. Report: www.closecalls...
After earlier HBP situations, including one which injured Mets player JD David, knocking him out of the game, Mets pitcher Yoan Lopez threw a first-pitch fastball in the bottom of the 8th inning inside and shoulder-high to batter Arenado for a called first ball, resulting in a benches-clearing incident after Arenado's response.
In fight or potential fighting situations, including bench clearing brawls and otherwise, umpires are instructed to identify primary aggressors-who instigated the fight-and to eject that person (or multiple persons). In this situation, replays are clear that Arenado was that primary aggressor for actions, including grabbing and throwing New York catcher Tomas Nido to the side prior to the benches clearing.
Similarly, Clapp was ejected for appearing to wrap and drag Mets player Pete Alfonso to the ground from behind. This is to be interpreted as an excessively violent act during a fight similar to throwing a punch and, accordingly, Clapp was removed from the game.
Warnings, which had not previously been in place, were issued following the benches-clearing incident.
Official Baseball Rule 6.02(c)(9) pertains to both intentionally pitching at the batter and the issuance of warnings and states that if the umpires deem the pitcher has intentionally pitched at the batter's head, the pitcher should be ejected "without hesitation" due to the danger of such an act. If intent is not ascribed, however, there can be no ejection unless the pitcher participates in the fight or instigates it through actions that do not include the pitch thrown (e.g., aggressive gestures, walking toward the plate, etc.).
If the umpires do not deem the pitch intentional, although no ejection of the pitcher/manager may occur for "intentionally pitch at batter" reasons, warnings MAY be issued.
Unlike ejections, warnings do not need intentional throwing at incidents for issuance, though coincidentally, they most often do occur as a result of such pitches.
OBR 6.02(c)(9) Comment states: "If, in the umpire’s judgment, circumstances warrant, both teams may be officially “warned” prior to the game or at any time during the game."

Baseball "fights" are the most ridiculous thing in sports. MLB must do what the NHL did many years ago and prohibit anyone from leaving the bench to join in a fight. It would prevent injuries. There are really 2 reasons batters are getting hit so much in recent years. The first is that the general pitching tendency these days is up and in as opposed to the old days of down and away. The other is that every pitcher these days is trying to throw 90+ mph even on breaking balls. Lose control of pitches like that and the ball is going to the head. There is one other reason that pertains right now and that is it is too cold in many parts of the country for pitchers to get a grip on the ball.
@leeapoth
@leeapoth 2 года назад
It was high and tight. Definitely a pitch that was meant to send a message considering that 5 Mets were beaned in the last two days. But it wasn’t THAT high and tight. Nolan looks pretty soft here. I think Showalter said it best after the game when he said that when Alonso actually got hit in the head, he just went to first base.
@peterron924
@peterron924 2 года назад
You underestimate how scary a 94 mph fastball tailing in on you can be lol... and how much it looks like it could hit you. It might not look "that high and tight" from the TV angle, but it definitely was high and tight. That's not close to the strikezone whatsoever.

@linollieum3742
@linollieum3742 2 года назад
I don't think it was soft by Arenado, it was obviously intentionally thrown at his head area, the umpire's didn't call anything for it because they ruled it was not intentional, so Arenado either gets back in the box and assumes he won't get another one at his head that actually hits his dome, or he calls the pitcher out for it and starts the argument before getting hit again. If he let the pitcher hit him then at least the pitcher would have been tossed instead, and the ejections would have been more favourable for his team, but I don't blame him for not just letting himself get drilled on the next pitch. There would be a brawl if the next pitch hits him anyways.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Cards fan writing two miles from Busch Stadium, I agree. Pete Alonso, as you say, got rocked in the fucking head and walked to first. Nolan looks petulant here; I'd say he was compensating for tossing away the 3rd out in G1. Plus, I dunno what the fuck Stubby Clapp was doing tackling Alonso, but the Mets have a reason to be pissed, whereas Nolan's bravado looks unearned. Also, Miles Mikolas needs to shut the fuck up. As Bassitt says, MLB screwed w/ the composition of the balls, putting everyone in danger. Yet, Genesis Cabrera has major control problems - he threw a cannon to the side of Bryce Harper's head last year. Cards need to clean up their side of the road first.

Arenada must be wearing his skirts today. 4 Mets were hit, Alonso got actually hit on the head, but Arenada is the loudest one hollering at the pitcher for ALMOST hitting him. Pipe down Cardinals.

Hey this is part of baseball. You have to send a message after your team member has been targeted. Not sure throwing at the head was a good idea...but even in high school we called it "chin music" for a reason.

Man I get that people get mad wen they get hit on accident, but I think retaliating and intentional hitting someone or intentionally throwing near their head is pathetic. It’s a pathetic way to try to make a point. Pitchers screw up sometimes and hit people on accident , but retaliation for that is to try to hurt or hurt someone who wasn’t even the pitcher that beamed the dude on ur team, it’s pathetic and I don’t care wat team does it I’ve always hated that in baseball it’s just wrong. Pitchers will miss on accident the answer is not to hurt another mad that had. Pathing to do with it. Hope everyone is good and every team stops this crap.

A good rule would be if a pitcher ends a players career then the pitchers career is over. That way a pitcher would know what he is risking when he head hunts

I reckon umpire issues a warning before the game starts - that'd be NY office's decision - correct? I'd throw out Arenado for being aggressor and Clapp for suplex Alonso on the ground too. I reckon MLB have team of analysts / umpires to analyze over the brawl who's getting fined / suspension etc I'm curious about protocols / procedures
@samuelbarrett5648
@samuelbarrett5648 2 года назад
If there ever is a warning before a game, the league notifies each team before the game, and the umpires don't mention it at the plate meeting. If a brawl happens during a game, umpires try to stop it, but if it gets out of hand, they simply stand back and observe, watching for anyone else who should be ejected for other reasons.
