1B Umpire Alfonso Marquez ejected Blue Jays pitcher Yimi Garcia and pitching coach Pete Walker and HP Umpire Lance Barrett ejected manager Charlie Montoyo. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2022/...
Garcia was ejected after hitting Josh Donaldson with a pitch (which itself followed Giancarlo Stanton's 3-run home run), and crew conference outcome that ruled the HBP an intentional act. Walker was ejected arguing the call to eject Garcia. Montoyo was ejected half an inning later when Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga threw a pitch inside and high to Blue Jays batter Bo Bichette and no ejection for intentionally throwing at a batter occurred (warnings are automatically put into place any time a pitcher is ejected for an intentional pitch at the batter).

This mess lies at the feet of Marquez and his crew. They blew the Donaldson HBP out of proportion. NOBODY expected ejections there. Not even the Yankees. And their overreaction lost them control of this game. Umpire conferences after HBP were supposed to allow things to cool, instead, this conference was a lesson in confirmation bias where some or all of these 4 invented a problem that very likely didn’t actually exist. Not a good look for this crew.
@rayray4192

The primary reason for crew conference after H.B.P. is to take the decision out of the hands of one umpire, and eliminate the need to make an immediate decision.

In this case, rightly or wrongly, I think the Umps turned it from a "tense situation" with the second hit-by-pitch, into an "angry" situation, for both sides, but especially for the Blue Jays. With Donaldson, going by the video, I think Warnings would have sufficed. Montoya wouldn't have been happy, but I think that would have sufficed. Then, after the Blue Jay pitcher got ejected for hitting the batter, anything close, like that later pitch you showed, it's just going to piss off the Blue Jays if they see, what they perceive, as unequal treatment by the Umps. Long story short, rightly or wrongly, I think the Umps turned a tense situation into just short of a storm, between those teams.

@BamaMTA04
@BamaMTA04 2 года назад
I haven't done the research on these 4 umpires, but this is one of those situations where and why it always hurts when players (even at the HS level) don't umpire after their careers are over. Instead you have persons who never played the game and don't understand the nuances arbitrating the "unwritten" aspect of it. No one on either side thought that was intentional - 3-3 game, 6th inning, 0-1 count. But 4 MLB Umpires who have made it through 10-15 years of training did. So with that being said, I would have to agree with Lindsay there HAS to be more to this. Somewhere those officials were told by MLB about something else going on or they had other information we don't. I hope. Man, I hope.
@a_doggo
@a_doggo Год назад
It's obvious for an entire umpire's career - either you're effortless reading where plays, hits, and throws are going, knowing instinctively which players are backing up where - or you're reciting the manual and have a bag of flash cards in your trunk and probably won't ever get to the point of calling a quality game without a "real" guy/gal on the plate. I have no clue how the non ball-players even survive calling ball above the HS level - because they basically don't. They'd lose their heads in the first inning of an NCAA-level game. No shot.

A few things: First- the "I'm done with you" hand waive by the crew chief when ejecting Garcia was demeaning and unprofessional. The level of umpire unprofessionalism needs to be corrected by MLB in these situations. Secondly, when ejecting the pitching coach, the crew chief, again, nearly hit Montoyo in the face. I typically defend umpires and believe that they have every right to engage in heated arguments with managers/coaches/players. And I'm tired of hearing people say that unpires are "ruining the game". (There's a lot ruining the game, including the players' union, the umpires' union, large market owners' greed, no salary caps, no profit sharing, etc...) Nonetheless, the level of general professionalism anong umpires needs to step up. For example, what happened with in the recent Bumgarner - Dan Bollino confrontation is far below an acceptable level of decency and professionalism. Likewise, the handling of this situation falls short of the mark.

Amazing that you can have a crew of four umpires talk it over and somehow not one of them had the common sense to assess the situation and realize it couldn’t possibly be intentional. Garcia sequences his slider and 4/2-seamer off each other (just check baseball savant to see how he works both edges of the plate with them). After the first pitch sinker, a fastball in (that got away) to set up another slider away makes a lot more sense than plunking a guy to put the go ahead run on base in the 6th inning. The whole crew blew this one.

@@bernier42 I’m not suggesting that the umpires check it mid game. This was just straight up incompetence by an umpiring crew. It was the 2nd pitch of the at bat, the game was tied, the balls had been terrible all night, and Donaldson, who is known to overreact to things, didn't even react. And considering the 3 other umpires are relatively inexperience in the League, this falls on Marquez, which to be fair doesn't surprise me, he seems like a fine umpire when not doing Blue Jays games, but when he does Blue Jays games he becomes incompetent, I'm not one for conspiracy theories but it seems to happen more than enough to be a coincidence.

What? The hbp's were even at one and one. Its a tie game in the 6th inning. A warning to both sides was all that was needed.
@kevindavis8175
@kevindavis8175 2 года назад
I wonder what prompted MLB to implement the rule where the umps had to confer before making decisions on warnings or ejections. It seems like the immediate reaction by the home plate ump was necessary.
@jaybingham3711
@jaybingham3711 2 года назад
If the umps were affirmatively briefed before game, the first hbp should have been an ejection. And then Garcia. If no issues were noted prior to game, both hbp should only have resulted in being on notice after second one with no ejection. Instead, this creates a scenario of "freebie first one." Teams will use that knowledge.

@@jpvanden1 the computers will be used to call balls and strikes. There will still be umpires in the field. Just not behind the plate. I would prefer real umpires calling the balls and strikes, but they need to get over their grudges with certain players and be more consistent. All except Angel Hernandez, he’s consistently BAD.

I think almolst all umpires are against the Blue Jays and there's evidence of it over the years other teams pitchers can go after Toronto batters nothing happens but when a blue Jays pitcher un intentionality hit a batter they get ejected from the game that's what I believe

It's been like this for awhile, remember 2015 where Jim Wolfe ejected Aaron Sanchez cause apparently hitting someone in the ankle is intentional... but somehow KC kept pitching High and inside to Toronto and that's fine??? I like Watching Jay's games, but when the umpires are clearly biased against a Canadian team then it's very hard to watch

The pitcher definitely seems like he lost this ball. You can see his throwing motion ends up all wonky. I feel like pitchers are going to start throwing at players on purpose and then act all apologetic, because this pitcher just moves on casually from hitting the batter, but if he acted all upset about hitting the guy, he probably doesn't get tossed.

The Benidorm of the doubt absolutely should have been used here and instead the crew created a worse situation. Logic and common sense were absent from this and then to run Montoya just destroyed the credibility of that crew. Terrible.

The pitching coach and players should be able to argue without being restrained as well. As long as they aren’t trying to attack the umpire. That’s the way it used to be and it should be like that now. Yelling at them to get out while they are being forcibly restrained is a bad look for umpires. This is for both teams and umpires, just let them have their say and they’ll usually storm off. No need to grab them and hold them back especially the coaches. I’ve seen coaches that argue more calmly than managers.

It is the manager's job to discuss or argue calls. It is never an assistant coach's job. Assistant coaches should be seen and not heard.

I usually come to this page for the real view, and I like that defense of the umpires happens here. It definitely always gives a different viewpoint to Jomboy ("Uh, I don't know what the rule is, but I think the umpire screwed up." -Seems to be a line in every one of his videos.) Occasionally, however, it does seem like you go overboard trying to explain the umpire's actions away. This was a bad call to eject. (From a Braves fan. No dog in this fight.)

@@critter2 I had a viewpoint and I expressed it. I thought too much of the video was used to say "Well, they might have done it because of this reason, or that reason. Maybe they did have a good reason." While I appreciate avoiding bashing on the umpires, I thought the video would be much better with a short and simple, "We don't know what other information they had that may have changed the call, but from outside appearances, I believe this hit by pitch was not intentional." Overall, I love the content here and hope that Lindsay keeps up the great work!

First MLB needs to fix the screwed up baseball's they have had this season. both batter and pitchers have been making several complaints about it. It's possible that MAYBE that is what happened here. Second MLB needs to start allowing for the Teams to file grievances against umpires. As long as there is no way to fine or have umpires suspended for their actions, this will continue on and will only get worse. There's already been plenty of examples just this season alone to make this happen. MLB loves to take a look every off season as to how to change the rules and try and make the game better, They should really start looking at the umpires and see what they can change that way too. As a side 3rd comment, for me personally I really wish the managers would protest the games more and have it actually mean something, like it can lead to the umpires being investigated, fined, and just like with the players if this happens enough time even suspended without pay. Whether that means a single umpire or the whole crew for that game/series. The rare times that manager goes out and actually does make an official protest, it amounts to nothing. To be clear, by protesting I don't mean just by going out and arguing the situation. I mean when the umpire has to actually turn around in front home plate and make the P sign.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 2 года назад
Curiously, MLB has created a rule that does not allow protests. Very strange, because it does hold umpires accountable.
