If you are trained to be an official score-book score-keeper at any level of baseball, do you agree with the announcer that Molina should be charged with an error for interfering with the batter? I can't say with confidence that I found the answer. The bat hits Molina's hand. One of the umpire's calls interference. The Brewers manager has a choice of either accepting the result of the play (for example, in the case of a better outcome like a home run) or the batter being awarded 1st base. In the case of the latter--the Brewers manager's choice, the runners "are permitted to move up one base" because 1st base was occupied by a runner. Up to this point, I get it. I was in doubt that Molina (at position 2) should get charged with an error. The announcer said, "E2." I did not find any score-keeping guidance in the Major League Baseball (MLB) rulebook; however, I found the following guidance in a reference unfamiliar to me ("Baseball Reference"--I hope it's for MLB) : ... The catcher is charged with an error however the batter is not considered to have reached on an error, and is not charged with a time at bat. While the batter is charged with a plate appearance (according to rule 10.22a), for statistical purposes, reaching on catcher's interference does not affect a player's on-base percentage. ... www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Catcher%27s_interference Note: The reference to 10.22a might be 10.21 depending on the version. 10.21 in one version I found (hopefully the current version) is sensibly titled DETERMINING PERCENTAGE RECORDS Aside: Suppose the reference is legit. The part about "the batter is not considered to have reached [1st base] on an error" makes sense because to score-keep otherwise would unfairly lower the batter's batting average--a percentage record.
