Ejector & Center Pin Removal for the Ruger Super Redhawk

I finally decided to make a slotted bit to remove the ejector retainer which allows you to remove the ejector, ejector spring; center pin, rod, and spring. It was pretty easy. I do wish I could have been able to drill a hole instead of cutting a nasty looking slot. It does work though. I just might try again after I replace my cobalt bits that some clown ruined for me.*****Brownell's has a bit to remove the ejector retainer if you know the magic words. I tried to find one before I made one, but I was apparently using the wrong combination of words. Search for "Ejector Bit" on Brownells site. It cost $9 and is much nicer than mine. I already bought one.*****

Thanks for posting this, My GP100 cylinder was acting flaky and when I took the crane out it turned out the screw had backed itself out. When I took the cylinder off the screw just fell out. A few minutes dremeling a slot into my bit and I got it all back together.

Nice informative video 👍🏼💪🏽made a tool like yours only with an old slotted screwdriver; cut it with a dremel , worked good. Took Brownell six months to send me the proper bit WTF someone mentioned Locktite on cap No No No like you said hand torque only

Thanks for the good comments. If you haven't already seen it, I have a more recent video "Cylinder Disassembly FYI" that addresses a couple issues you may find useful about the Brownells ejector bit and the center pin rod. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RqNSHxzxAk4.htmlsi=a6qt2vk3lsuwHYAH

Thanks for making this awesome video. Always wondered what tool Ruger uses to install/remove the ejector. Will buy this tool from Brownells.

For some reason I just seen your post. Maybe a RU-vid algorithm?... anyhow, my last video I mention your shims that I installed in my 454. I got a set for my Henry as well, but I haven't installed those yet. Hopefully soon...

Sorry for the late reply. I did mention you can buy one at Brownells in the video description and a previous post. I found a bit that looks similar at Midway but it is for S/A revolvers. If you can get a part number from Midway, I'll add it to the video description.

Add some red locktite to that screw. I’ve had that screw back itself out. Wasn’t tight enough from the factory.
@JR-xj2vr
@JR-xj2vr 6 месяцев назад
Careful though. The locktite can only be on the treads of the screw. If any of that slides onto the ejector rod, you could inadvertently lock up the entire ejector mechanism and then you are hosed.

I would never use any "locktite" on the ejector retainer screw. The compound on the threads is a "Nylok" product, and retains its locking properties over several disassembles, and you don't want or need to over torque the screw. You can feel when the Nylock is starting to loose its holding strength, but I have yet to have the screw loosen or back off on either of my 454 Casulls after multiple disassemblies/reassemblies. Some years ago I found "Vibra-TITE" which is the closest thing to the Nylok properties that I have seen, and have used that on my AR builds without any issues of loosening even after removing and reinstalling hardware. I would suggest that you try the Vibra-TITE on the ejector retainer screw over the non-reusable locktite. I initially purchased the Vibra-TITE to use on the retainer screw, but have yet needed to.

I have an Alaskan 454 and they say the Brownells center pin removal tool will not work with an Alaskan . I would like to know what is different on the Alaskan . Any ideas ? Very good video by the way .

"THEY" do have a lot of information, but most of the time it's not based on knowledge... There is nothing different between the 454 Super Redhawks except barrel length. But the one perplexing dilemma in this situation is two fold. First is, you have to be smarter than the ejector bit. Second, you have to be smarter than the center pin too! Ejector bit: if the center pin does not fit in the hole... the hole is small, so clean it out! Mine was half full of debris. I sprayed degreaser inside and gave it some hard taps on the bench and some of the stuff came out. I repeated that several times and also used a pipe cleaner to help remove stuff too. Mine also had burrs inside the hole, so I used a number 47 drill bit to start and then finished with a number 46 to clean out the burrs. If the center pin still doesn't fit in the hole... Center pin: the pin may be slightly mushroomed from recoil. I used a small file to remove the sharp edges from mine so it would fit in the hole. Pretty simple... The center pin is one of the parts that I keep on hand "just in case" since it obviously incurs wear from the recoil. I'm glad you liked the video... Hopefully "THEY" were listening...

@@TheRealOLEMITE Thank You for your response. I went ahead and ordered the bit and a new center pin . Keep up the good work !

Any idea what torque can be applied to this screw? That bit fits perfectly in commonly available firearms mini torque wrenches like the Wheeler FAT wrench. Thanks!
@TheRealOLEMITE
@TheRealOLEMITE 4 года назад
I don't know a torque rating. Its just a slight hand tightening after it bottoms out. The thread lock keeps it from loosening.

I don't like to guess, but looking at the exploded view I would say so.
