The movie "Om Shanti Om" was a homage to 70s and 80s Bollywood with the story of "Karz" as a backdrop. They paid homage to this movie. In fact, Rishi Kapoor (the actor in Karz) and Subhash Ghai (the Director of Karz) both had a cameo in Om Shanti Om in the awards ceremony scene.

(CAR-Z) Kara from my childhood. Stayed with me. (Not froM India, but South America) Classic and one of Subash Ghai's best when he was in his prime. WIsh you would watch in context. This is the pay off song.

Great soundtrack for karz, one of my favourites is dard e dil. Don't watch though, like most movies it hasn't aged well but do watch the songs.

Chori Chori is a lovely watch - Raj Kapoor and Nargis. A remake of 'It Happened One Night'. Pakeezah is another classic - with Raj Kapoor and Meena Kumari (tragic life...the film took decades to complete and you can see the deterioration in her health in the later parts)

This movie 'Karj' (Debt) is inspired from 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud' [If I am not mistaken, its a late 60s movie]. Peter starts remembering his past life and there are glimpses of some gestures, some tunes that recur throughout the film slowly form a bg for the script to evolve. Here, as is obvious from the song 'Ek Haseena ( a beautigful girl) thhee, ek diwana( her lover) thha, the lover is murdered by the villainous gold-digger who then goes off to throw his mom and sis out of the palatial estate house. He is born again and accidently plays the tune that awakens him to his past life. His mission to search for his home and family and repay the debt of love is fulfilled when he reaches this tea estate. There are mistakes galore but the Indians are high on both Emotions and Forgiveness. So? So Karj became a great hit.

Late 80s was bollywood's down fall

For classic month, I would highly recommend the following 2: 1. Dosti (1964), that is an absolute classic, a wonderful film and quite the tearjerker (Rick will definitely cry) 2. Mere Mehboob which is a classic romance and beautifully portrays the culture and refinement of Lucknow during the 50s and 60s. A very poetic movie. Good luck finding subtitled versions!

This film was a very, very loose adaptation of the Hamlet story in a way. And if you look at it that way, this song is then the 'reveal', in the play within the play in Hamlet. The Bulbul song from Haider. Only, here it comes in the climax.
