It would have been hilarious if the runner on 3rd tried to steal home and the 1st baseman had to throw the glove to home plate to stop him.

El Duque was one of my favorite pitchers. I was always confident the Yankees were gona win when he pitched. I loved the way he cocked his leg up to his chin. David Wells, Mussina and Pettie were also great. That Yankee team was the best.

I always had the same view also. And El Duque did everything perfect. He always walked away with the right numbers as well as the win. It was rare he had a bad game. Even his loses were well pitched also for the most part.

Love El Duque, but the mixed facial expression of Joe Torre seems to agree with you. As a fan, he likes it on an emotional level, but as a manager he probably thinks rationally that, had the ball popped out, the runner on 3rd would have scored and Ordonez could have reached 1st or perhaps 2nd base. Had El Duque kept the ball, he still had the chance of double play with next batter.

The weird part is Tino didn’t look surprised to complete the play as the glove flew towards him as if it was routine
@mrmacross
@mrmacross 10 лет назад
Now that I think about it, I think the runner at third probably could've scored on that play. I don't think there's any chance Tino Martinez would either 1) get the ball out in time to throw the guy out at home 2) thrown the glove and ball home in time to throw out the runner or 3) run home to tag out the runner. I wish he tried. It would've been interesting.
@tomford7983
@tomford7983 10 лет назад
Pretty bad for the third base coach not to notice this. Even if Martinez threw it to home quickly, there's no way he can put it in accurately enough for the catcher to make an easy tag.
@tomford7983
@tomford7983 10 лет назад
Plus there are two outs at this point. Just going by percentages it is worth it to try something like this rather than hope the next hitter gets a base hit. If the next guy hits .300 then to not try this means he thinks it has less than a 30% chance of working. It's got to be at least 50/50 imho.
@Whitsoxrule1
@Whitsoxrule1 9 лет назад
Could you imagine how legendary that would be if the guy at third runs for home and Martinez proceeds to throw the glove to the catcher for the out?
@pandasweater
@pandasweater 9 лет назад
mrmacross The first thing I thought of after watching this video. The runner at third and the third base coach were not paying attention. After the ball is hit, the runner on third should freeze. After El Duque fields the ball the third base runner should continue to hold. Once El Duque starts running to first, the runner on third should shift his feet to give him the ability to quickly motion towards home plate because El Duque is not going to suddenly spin and throw to third after running towards first. After El Duque throws the glove to first base, the runner on third should be sprinting towards home plate. By the time Tino Martinez catches that glove the runner on third should be sliding towards home plate.
@hughdismuke4703
@hughdismuke4703 2 года назад
Its possible the play may have confused the runner or the runner was running back in the direction of the bag not realizing what was going on, thus missing a possible opportunity to score. He probably would've been gunned down at the plate after Martinez fired the glove home. LOL!

Met El Duque in Chicago while visiting a hotel the Yankees were staying in. We walked up upon El Duque cussing some guy out for bothering him while El was on the phone with his mother who was trapped in Cuba at the time. We were shocked and I was like 'wow, there's something wrong with this guy.' While walking back to the hotel El Duque was walking towards us, stopped and personally apologized for the incident. He explained that he didn't get much time to talk to his mother and the guy was pestering him for autographs, although I did feel sorry for the guy who got the brunt of it in his face. It was understandable and that changed my mind about El just being a normal person. I probably would've done the same in that situation, I can't really imagine. Plus you have to hand it to the guy, he literally built a raft and floated to America risking his life for asylum here in the states. That took a ton of guts because those currents could've carried him out to sea also. But it wasn't hard to get his papers once he got here. He was at the time on the national team for Cuba and one of its greatest players. MLB was looking for his services and the only way he could participate was to defect. It was one way for him to get freedom and possibly for his family as well and so his life went beyond just baseball. It really makes you think about immigration and how we need to make it a better system.

Fielders gloves usually have deep rounded pockets for easier cradling of a fielded ball. In shaping it, it is possible to force open an opening just enough where a ball could get trapped, combined with the force of the ball hitting the pocket. That's probably what happened. It's a very rare thing and I've seen it happen about maybe 2-3 times over a 46 year span where I followed the game. This is the only time I saw a glove actually thrown for an out though.
