It was named by the fisherman in South America because when La Niña happens they have a great fishing season, 2020 being that bad fisherman season for Australia as the nutrients are brought to the surface on the eastern side of pacific and warm currents t9 Australia.

El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of what is known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. The ENSO cycle is a scientific term that describes the fluctuations in temperature between the ocean and atmosphere in the east-central Equatorial Pacific (approximately between the International Date Line and 120 degrees West). La Niña is sometimes referred to as the cold phase of ENSO and El Niño as the warm phase of ENSO. These deviations from normal surface temperatures can have large-scale impacts not only on ocean processes, but also on global weather and climate. El Niño and La Niña episodes typically last nine to 12 months, but some prolonged events may last for years. While their frequency can be quite irregular, El Niño and La Niña events occur on average every two to seven years. Typically, El Niño occurs more frequently than La Niña.

Thank you for this very informative video. Climate & weather is very complex so grasping various topics can often be difficult. It seems it's actually atmospheric conditions that triggers both El Nino & La Nina. Sooo, how will the climate breakdown and the broken jet stream (north & south) affect these phenomena? Both El Nino & La Nina are confirmed by the status of sea-surface temps in the Pacific, but could both these events be predicted by the current state of the jet stream, or are the impacts of the jet stream too localised to impact global ocean temps? There is also the Indian Ocean & Atlantic Dipoles. I assume each of these phenomena have a knock-on effect on each other? Which has the strongest influence?

They also effect the activity of tropical cyclones in different oceans. It creates a more favorable environment for tropical cyclone development in the eastern Pacific and some other areas, and less active in the northern Atlantic. It is or almost the opposite with a La Nina.

Hey! My name is ElNino and my Sisters name is LaNina! She does the same thing that I do, just a lot more extreme, so, I form, by atmospheric pressure in the eastern pacific, when this happens, easterlies weaken, then, upwelling stops, several circulation cells form, and then air rises over the eastern pacific, and then subsides over Australia and Indonesia 🇮🇩 I memorize that for my exam tom 😄🙈 how do you think I did?

Can you please explain Ekman Transport in relation with El nino. What and how things happen at Peruvian Coast? Trade winds move from East to West, so due the Ekman transport. water beneath should move 90 degrees to the direction of the wind. But when we see the El Nino explanation, it says, Trade wind leads to piling up of warm water in Northern Australia and UPWELLING takes place at Peruvian Coast. I am confused, where is Ekman Transport when trade winds are moving the ocean current in their direction only leading to accumulation of hot water in N Australia. Please help.

Did he make a mistake by saying that the warm water piles up at north and south america when it should be asia and australia instead because the pacific ocean lies on the left of North and south america and the wind is moving from east to west.

so basically, usually the warm water eventually causes rainfall around indonesia and australia and upwelling around the northwest part of south america. but when el nino happens the warm water doesn't have enough strength and stops in the middle of australia and south america and since it doesn't reach australia and indonesia there's not enough rainwater for them which causes droughts in indonesia. usually the rain falls on the western side of the pacific ocean but during el nino the rain ends up falling on the more eastern side, causing peru to be flooded. also I'd like to note el nino occurs around christmas and it's summer time in the southern half of the world during christmas. so el nino occurs during summer. on the contrary, when la nina happens the warm water goes too far into indonesia and australia which causes more than the usual amount of cold water to go towards south america. now does this mean la nina causes floods around indonesia and australia and droughts around northwest part of south america?
