EL OASIS DE AMÉRICA: HUACACHINA, ICA, PERÚ I DRONE AERIAL TOUR 2024
Huacachina, a picturesque village nestled around a small oasis amidst sand dunes in southwestern Peru, boasts a rich history and allure. Situated approximately five kilometers from the city of Ica in the Ica District of Ica Province, this charming locale has captured the imagination of both locals and tourists alike. Despite its modest permanent population of around 100 residents, Huacachina draws in tens of thousands of visitors annually.
The heart of Huacachina revolves around a quaint natural desert lake, often referred to as the "oasis of America." According to local folklore, the waters of this oasis possess therapeutic properties, believed to alleviate various ailments such as arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, and bronchitis. Both locals and tourists frequently indulge in bathing rituals or mud treatments in hopes of experiencing these purported healing effects.
Legend intertwines with the origins of the oasis, recounting a tale of a native princess whose encounter with a male hunter led to the creation of the lagoon. Startled by the hunter's approach while bathing, she fled the scene, leaving behind her mirror, which transformed into the serene lake. Another rendition suggests that her departure caused the pool where she bathed to evolve into the now-famous lagoon, with her mantle unfurling into the surrounding sand dunes. Rumors persist that the spirit of the princess lingers in the oasis, purportedly taking the form of a mermaid.
The natural formation of the lake, originally sustained by underground aquifers, faced threats from increased well-drilling activities in the early 2000s, endangering its existence. To safeguard this natural wonder and maintain its appeal as a tourist destination, local business entities initiated efforts to replenish the lake's water levels by pumping water into it starting in 2015.
In 2016, hopes soared with the announcement of a project led by Peruvian scientist Marino Morikawa, renowned for his innovative nanobubble system designed to decontaminate Lake El Cascajo. Morikawa aimed to undertake the restoration of the Huacachina lagoon, promising a potential solution to preserve its ecological balance and allure. However, as of 2020, updates on the progress of this initiative have been scarce, leaving the future of Huacachina's iconic oasis shrouded in uncertainty.
