This is a review of the caving headlamps made by El Speleo Lights. They are currently making two lights including the Terra and Lunatic. These lights can be purchased directly from Que Ver in Bozeman, MT at: elspeleo.com
or from On Rope 1 at: onrope1.com/lights

A fair review as always Derek - "very similar to another well known caving lamp" may be slightly undercooking it though, with advancements in quality, only copying the original LED caving lamp.

Very fair review. I own two Lunatics (long story), love them, have had several reliability problems, and have had good customer service. I can't speak to the runtimes. Admittedly one reason I like the Lunatic is that as of last year I always won the "whose light is brightest" ego contest by a wide margin.

Michael Raymond Thanks! Good to know my experience was consistent with yours. I strive to be fair.

I have an El Speleo Gnoma 1200 and have been extremely happy with it. It's met most of my lightning needs and battery life hasn't been an issue, even with full weekends of multiple trips. A few shortcomings, but amazing customer service has made up for it!

I bought an ElSpeleo Rescue, the newer model, directly from ElSpeleo in Croatia, in May last year also thanks to this review. Both through testing at home and actual use of the lamp in several multi-day trips, I found out that the lamp does NOT put out a constant light at all levels, like almost all other serious caving headlamps do. Rather, the light output steadily decreases throughout the whole runtime, even at the lowest level, and since the very beginning. Put in 2 fully charged cells, turn on the light at level 2 (just around 200 lumens so a perfectly sustainable output), come back a few minutes later and you'll discover the output has already dropped by 5%. 10 hours in, the light puts out just 50% of what it did initially. This is at all levels, at least with the "ambient" flood leds; I still have to test the throw led, the stepdown seems to be somewhat less pronounced with it, but still present. While this behaviour will prolong the runtime by a lot (albeit somewhat "artificially"), it also means that you actually never get to use the amount of light the lamp could deliver. Although I don't know if this is limited to the Rescue model, this could explain, maybe, the apparently overstated runtime claims.

Yeah, I have concerns, which I discuss in this video. You can look up the specifications for the emitters and Li-ion batteries that are used and conclude very quickly that either lumen output or run times are not accurate. I don't have a means of testing lumen output so I chose to just do run-time tests and found both the Lunatic and Terra fell short of their claims. Other headlamps also have false claims because the lights need to reduce lumen output for thermal regulation. The manufacturers that seem to be the most honest about performance are Scurion, Marble Mountain Lights and Little Monkey.

Thanks for the review Derek. I will be purchasing myself a Lunatic. Thanks for your honest reviews and product criticism. I will be in contact with Doug soon.

I had the same issue with the flickering led on terra, but they send a new one for free and everything is ok now. Another problem i have is with the joint between the wire and the battery case that came loose. Another thing I dont't like is the cable that is too long, so I had to cut it. Also that waterproff connector is too big and may be unconfortable. The runtime is not the one given by elspeleo, it is close to one Derek calculated.

Great video as always. I was wondering if you had a helmet review in the works. I want to move away from ABS Foam helmets and towards what I think are called "suspension style" helmets. I know some of the community's favorite models are discontinued. Regardless, your input and thoughtful breakdowns would be incredibly helpful.

Hey Shawn! I had been working on one, but I filmed a bit of the Half Dome and Vertex, and now both are being changed. I'll get my act together soon though. The most common ABS hard shell (aka suspension) helmets used for caving these days are the Petzl Vertex and Edelrid Ultralight. The Petzl Ecrin was of course very popular, but not available for almost 10 years now. The Petzl Alveo may be okay, but I rarely see them. A lot of the hybrid helmets are going towards more foam and less shell, which is good for impact absorption and weight reduction, but not great for cavers.

@@DerekBristol Thanks so much Derek! This helps a lot. I have had trouble making sure the foam stays in good condition for longer than 2-3 years. So I am looking for something with a little bit longer of a lifespan. I will look forward to those videos!

You don’t have to read between the lines much to guess that I’m not a fan of these lights. I don’t have them any more.
