HI - i;m a recording sound engineer/producer and i really appreciate the specific detail you go into sharing in your reviews - including song examples. we all know speaker set ups are individual to their environment and listening positions, but i've noticed over 4 videos now you mention punchy clear bass. i've got so say that bass is such a dismissed part of the audio spectrum as most people's experience is having enough level and clarity to feel it right? also music listening has dropped off significantly over the years with stupid audio designs, but if you seek em out you can find superb. this isn't a complaint as you do a very thorough and valuable job. so sorry if this sounds a little long-winded but i think it's noteworthy. and yes i know this is speakers, not cans. i want to share something that you may consider for future testing. i always use my flat response studio cans to listen to reviews but for playing music i've had a lot of variation over the years. i recently wanted a set of cans for leisure - i compared loads and had a bit of a shock. i settled on the discontinued Tribits Quiet Plus - against the X, QP 50, 70&80s, Sony. Sennheiser and others. WHY THE DISCONTINUED? some reviewers said they lack punch - NO they don't at all with all genres (bear with me) but what i discovered was so sweet - no other cans could pick up the subtlety of a fingered upright bass. now i llsten to the odd jazz stuff from trad to modern and fusion (and as a former fusion bass player i know my basses), my music is way broader and goes into deep sub-bass - but this element of the bass being finely balanced with the mid that picks up how a finger sensually interacts with a deep upright bass string and its roll-off ring as well as HOW IT VIBRATES THE WOODEN BODY (and the lreble of how the strings slap a little) is a joy to behold (also glad you mentioned the sustain of reverb in a different review for treble) and i've not found many inexpensive SPEAKERS that offer this sensual pleasure. so i guess what i'm saying is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider making your bass reviews as encompassing as your reviews of the other tones by this fail safe test - but thanks for the detail. oh, and please let us know if you do so with these speakers. cheers

I enjoy your approach to reviewing, it's entertaining and subjectively informative and I'm good with that. I am a big Elac fan, I have a quartet of B6.2's along with a Elac 1010 sub for my home theatre system which I also use for most of my music listening as well. I also have a bedroom system with a pair of B5.2's powered by my venerable NAD 3155 integrated amp. I bought all the speakers on sale so my "bang for the buck" quotient is really high. Although I'm intrigued by the new Reference speaker the price is a deal breaker for me - musicians are always on a budget. I wish you'd incorporate some fine classical discs to really delineate soundstage differences and articulation but hey - Megadeath it is then. Rock on...

Not casio or korg, sorry, Yamaha makes great realistic affordable instruments. No they do not pay me, I chose the best. Elac DBR62 and Douk ST-01 Pro amp combo has made that great, live sound. A year ago, I bought a pair of these DBR62s and gave them 2 subs to play with. What a treat! *They're MY engame speakers.* I have gone through at least 5 pairs of other speakers, but none of those ever sounded "correct." Correct as in that's what music sounds like at Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note, Village Vanguard, and even St. Eustache in Paris. Mine isn't an expensive system. I drive them with an Emotiva A300 which is fed by an Emotiva PT-100. Equalization: flat. Streaming is with an iPad and a Modi 3, CDs through a DVD deck and the Modi coax, and an AT-120 with a Denon high output MC cartridge that the preamp loves on MM input. Symphony orchestras sound quite correct. Solo piano and vocals sound correct. Basie and Miles Davis sound correct. Pop, rock, and hip-hop? I don't know what is correct. No way to tell what the studio mixer has done. But I know more than a few reviewers didn't much like the DBR62s. Some said it's because they aren't sufficiently "exciting." Exciting, like putting a voice coil on a banjo and a tambourine and a kick drum?

I have watched dozens of your videos, and many of them more than three times. Using your advice, I have chosen a stereo system for some great friends who are listening to their vinyl LPs on a $65 turntable. (Ugh!) I have chosen the Cambridge AXR100, a pair of Elac B6.2 speakers, and the Fluance RT-83 turntable. Is this a worthwhile system for listening to TV audio, FM reception, Bluetooth, and vinyl records?

They obviously use different woofers - do you know any differences in the tweeters, and/or the crossover design? Are there wave guides behind the screens? When I got into audio quality - it was like you, I'm sure - because I love listening to music. And at first it was BASS - I had to have bass. And my first pair of speakers that I bought for myself, were Bose 501 - a friend works there, and they were a good price. And man, did they have bass! But as I got farther into it, and got more experience - I have come to appreciate *tweeters*. Which then leads to how well the crossover works, by blending the drivers, and getting out of the way. How clear and transparent is the window that is the audio system - that lets you hear the recording / music?

I have the 6.2s paired with a Cambridge Audio CXA60 amp and agree they can be a little fatiguing. Was listening to the MFSL reissue of the first B52s album and the female vocals were a bit tiring after a while. Bass sounds tight and snares seem like they're right in the room with you. Need to figure out a way to relax things a bit. Do you think a small sub would help?

I ran the B6.2 off a old class A Yamaha hybrid and a small Nad power amp. I find the Yamaha is not overly bright and fairly balanced. I find the Nad more bright in the top but still enjoyable. The Yamaha is definitely better for higher volumes. Emotiva gear I have owned had a tendency to be a bit cool.

I have been looking for something like this for a while. I bought the Elac B5s back in the day when they were the hottest speakers around. My conclusion was that they are near perfect for music but found them to be a bit warm for home theater. Vocal clarity was the biggest issue with my C5. I think the B5.2/6.2 are going to be more well suited to home theater.

Hello there, I have a hard time choosing - B6 first Gen. or Debut Reference. So far I understand the first ones are most fun capable? I found both of them almost in the same price range - 300/360 euro. I would like the better imaging - the accurate positioning of the instruments ( + the mid range + details) of the Reference, but that well described stage of the B6 does not let it go for me .. ? I gave up tuning the things I own. I start from scratch. It is like the fidelity in the photography - you can not have it all - it can not be perfectly detailed and without every possible little imperfection and in the same time with amazing 3D pop - like you are there in the scene...

I own a pair of Klipsch RP600Ms that I really dislike and find them way too enhance sounding and super fatiguing when crank them (I often listen to music through my speakers at shouting volume in a party setting). I was just about to order the Elac B6.2 because they are on sale right now but this video made me hesitate when you mentioned how they can lean in the bright/fatiguing direction when cranked. I would rather not spend the cash on the debut reference. Do you think im still going to find the B6.2 rather warm and rolled off coming from the Klipsch? Is there something else I should go for? I think the regular debut wouldnt be tight enough in the lows. I definitely prefer a gentler speaker on the top end because I listen to a lot of abrasive music like techno and death metal and the Klipsch's are way too much for that.Thanks
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 года назад
Have you tried facing the Klispch straight out into the room and putting them a bit closer to the wall? This may tame the top end a bit and add some bass. However, the b6.2's have a much more pronounced top end than the original and you are right, the bass on the original can be sloppy. At the volumes you are getting at you're going to want a 6.5" woofer for sure. The Debut Reference would be my recommendation but it's expensive. I found mine for $480 open box. I don't think you'll find the 6.2's rolled off compared to the Klispch. They are definitely not rolled off. If they are too much for you try putting on the grills and if that's still too much tape a couple pieces of tissue on the inside of the grill where the tweeter is. That's also a trick you can try on your Klipsch to see how they sound. Headphone people have been doing it for a long time and the same thing works on speakers.

This is a stretch, but is there any chance you could team up with your engineer friend and do a tutorial on how to refresh the internals of old speakers? For instance, I’ve got a pair of 30 year old Mirage 360. Apparently crossover parts, capacitors, etc can be upgraded? Whadya think about that?
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 года назад
That gets complicated. And yes it’s capacitors, inductors, and resistors for cross overs. I wouldn’t suggest redesigning the crossover but trying to determine the values of the existing crossover and then purchasing new parts with tighter tolerances. Redesigning the crossover would require measuring both drivers for their frequency response and even with computer modeling it requires tweaking after the fact. For what it’s worth if you want to give that a try that’s where I’d start but I’m not sure how much that would impact the sound.

@@joelopez7459 Well I would agree, and disagree. I bought both the Debut Reference and the Unifi 5.2 Starting with the Debut, the clarity is not as good as the Sierra, but the soundstage and imaging is much better. The unifi is a much better speaker in every way but bass extension. Clarity is off the charts better, and soundstage and imaging is stellar compared to the Sierra. You’ve heard the term veiled before? That’s the Sierra compared to the Unifi. Unifi is butt ugly compared to Sierra. But I prefer my music to be beautiful over the box. Great videos and very informative. You know I bought the Elac debut recently, but I can't help it but wonder why these speakers are way more expensive here in Australia than USA? Even if our dollar was just half USD, we still should only be paying around $500 for the Elac Debut or UB5, but they're charging almost $800 here in Australia. I just can't work out why we're paying so much more here? Australia and USA have a FREE TRADE, so why is it Australia elacs are almost double?

Just realized I’m so much of an Andrew Jones fanboy that I have ALL of these three speakers in different rooms. Plus the Unifi in my office. The B6 is in my bedroom. B6.2 in a home theater set with B5.2s as surround + center. And the new reference DBR63 in my dining room. I really enjoy the updates with the front ports in these, enabling flush placement with the furnitures. It makes sense if you want it to disappear and not stub the toes on speaker stands and cables. The first Debut B6 has back ports, and I still prefer that over the RP600m (yes I have that too, also finessing the tube amps for a softer horn sound in my office). But my god, my absolute favorite just has to be the Unifi and my journey with Elac stops there. The space and imaging makes me draw in air and breathe big. No other speakers I own does this to me that is so good, it’s physically and sonically comforting. Personally, I think The Unifi will still hold its own for years to come against the Kefs and Buchards. The 6.2 and DBR63 will also still matter. The original B6 does show its age in a bigger room, turning it up, the poor bracing and box construction you will definitely hear. Having said that, doing a room EQ fixes a lot of the problems with the B6. It’s been a fun ride with Elac. Can’t wait to see what Mr. Jones does next. I’ll probably buy those too!

@mydogskips2 3 года назад
With due respect, it's difficult to compare a $73 speaker to a $600 one, they're obviously in two completely different price ranges. Also with due respect, if you have both, you should listen to them for yourself and make the determination for yourself, others can only give you their subjective opinion on the speaker, relating their own experience, yours may be completely different, audio tastes and preferences are very personal and subjective. Finally, and again, with all due respect, hopefully you can hear the difference between $73 speakers and $600 speakers, then you can decide if the $600 speakers are worth the added $500+ expense, if they're not, you might be happier saving some money. My point is simply that nobody can tell you what you're going to like, you need to hear for yourself. A quick story to illustrate my point. Many years ago when first shopping for hi-fi speakers, I went to a store to listen to Bowers and Wilkins speakers, specifically the 805s, bookshelf speakers which I had read/heard a lot of great things about, they retailed for about $2,500 US. Anyway, when I got to the shop they had the lower line 600 series set up, something which I had never heard of as I was just starting off in my audiophile quest, and considering how it was much more in my price range, I listened to it. Well, I can honestly say the B&W 601 S3 speakers which cost $600/pair are still to this day, maybe 20 years later, one of the best speakers I have ever heard. Personally, I did not particularly like the 600s(smaller) or the 602s(bigger) though. While I was there, I told the salesman that I wanted to hear the $2,500 805s so he switched things for me and I had a listen, and let me tell you, I was totally blown away by what I heard because I completely HATED the speakers, I thought they sounded terrible, far too cold, sterile, dry, and analytical, it actually took my music apart and dissected it such that it didn't sound coherent at all. I could also tell that they took much more power to drive to get the same volume levels. What's the point of the story... a $600 speaker can sound better than $2,500 speakers, at least they did to me, and I only knew this after I was able to hear it for myself, otherwise I would have never believed it. So I bought those B&W 601 S3 speakers and have been happy with them ever since, at least until recently because now I'm actually trying to downsize my system and go for a more minimalist aesthetic. I've bought a few other speakers over the years, JBL, Klipsch, Polk LSIM speakers, some more expensive, some less than the B&Ws, and each sound good and have different strengths and weaknesses, but I cannot say any have been better. Am I telling you to buy B&W 601 S3's, no(although I do still think they're a great speaker, among the very best I've heard at any price, and I've heard speakers costing six figures), just that ultimately you need to listen for yourself. Also, listening is a skill that is developed through repetition and reflection, in a word, practice, it takes time. I'm not trying to talk down to you, just saying that if you have both speakers you really should listen to both of them yourself and decide which you like better, and after you've done that, what anyone says shouldn't matter. Let me put it this way, I'm not gonna let anyone else tell me how to eat my steak. If you like it rare, fine, if you like it medium-rare, fine, if you like it well done, fine, but I don't, I like my steak cooked medium and it doesn't matter to me what you say, the same goes for my taste in speakers. Trust your ears and trust your gut, you're the one experiencing it for yourself and no one else will experience it exactly the same as you do. And remember, when it comes to music and speakers, it's completely subjective, there are no wrong answers, just differences of opinion and preferences. Try to have fun and enjoy the music, in the end, that's really what it's all about, at least it's what it should be about.

@@cheapaudioman Thank you for your response. I guess it comes down to One being a 3 way and the other a 2 way I understand it's all in the crossover. @cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 года назад
@@petebakke6167 on a well integrated crossover a 2 way can sound just as good as a 3 way. Personally, I think the Unifi UB5 series is aimed at a more audiophile listening experience while the Debut is a bit more exciting with better sound staging. With that said, I do think that the Unifi first generation that I own have a flatter frequency response than the Debuts. I was listening to the UB5’s last night and the takeaway I had was that they are polite and do everything they’re supposed to do and do it well but they’re just missing the little bit of magic that the Debut Reference has. I don’t know if that makes sense but it’s the vibe I got and I’ve had them for over a year.

I respectfully disagree with the monkey and skull placement. The monkey should be given to B6. The B6 has too layback treble and boomy bass that make my eardrum hurt (no kidding). B6.2 fixes that two issues and tightens up the bracing to reduce the box resonance. The bass from B6.2 is just tighter and more defined. The treble from B6.2 is much more detailed and articulated but not bright to my ear, partially thanks to the DAC Topping E30 I was using. E30 rolls off after 15kHz so compensates the top end of the B6.2. Overall, I think the B6.2 revamped by Mr. Jones is the best bang for the buck among the three.

@@cheapaudioman Let's talk about engagement. From a presentation design perspective, the above feedback has merit. Typically, messaging that's clear, concise, and well paced helps to engage (and retain interest). Think Joe n Tell or Techno Dad. Let's talk about brand. It's important to establish a "brand" and separate yourself from the comps. Clearly, you've done that. By using "plain talk", looking at notes, w/periodic "sips" and campy transitions, you come off as very genuine. Think Dennis Miller meets Mr. Rogers. Final thoughts. As your channel grows, expect increased critique. That's a sign your "recipe" is working enough that listeners share out of care or envy. LOL. Maintain the core recipe and tweak it w/o wholesale changes.
