I appreciate how you show the look and feel of these products up close and the nuances of how they actually function when you use them to. You are one of the only audiophiles that seems to realize that we have eyes, too.

Best review for the evening! Thanks Darko! Good to hear that Elacs didn't disappoint.
@connorduke4619

The "kicker" was very well highlighted: that good active speakers usually easily outperform their passive cousins due to having a properly souped up amplifier. I sometimes think we audiophiles are people who like to buy a car chassis, then shop around between numerous underpowered engines and complain why the chassis never quite does what they expected it to.
@qua7771
@qua7771 Год назад
The major benefit of active speakers is that the drivers use separate amplifiers, and that does away with the passive crossovers. Passive crossovers are lossy, and have phase issues. With an active set up they can get a flat response using DSP in the preamp stage. The amps aren't necessarily better, but can operate more efficiently without the crossover soaking up power, and creating artifacts. For the car analogy, if your not getting traction, a bigger engine won't help. I'll agree that people often use inadequate amplification. A good amp will only get you so far though.

Thanks for the review. I like to hear that the active speaker work fine with no dsp frontend inside. The analog concept is very cool, so everybody can improve the soundquality with better external gear. Very nice!

John, you are awesome! Love the way you explain whatever it is you are reviewing. No mumbo-jumbo or really meaningless specs. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to have a real lover of "hi-fidelity" music and equipment giving us thorough, no b.s. reaction to the pieces under review. Please keep doing what you do. Cheers!

Excellent review. You mentioned the most important key features making the Navis unique: 1) design is good enough that no DSP is needed to "cover up"/correct short comings 2) analog direct, so if you have an excellent DAC then the analog signal does not get digitized again and future proof 3) easy subwoofer integration because of the high pass option

I was there, yes, great sound. However, it goes down to the D2 and that was about it. It lacked punch and really really needs a SUB for classical music. Other than that, great speakers! They had really nice timbre, and they disappeared on a hotel room... that's amazing!

John, you are so correct about how well the Navis scale. I recently read about audiophile fuses on an audio forum and tonight I just installed a $50 audiophile FUSE on my DDC that sits between my computer and DAC. The SQ coming out of the Navis noticeably kicked up another notch. I'm not joking. I never would have imagined a fuse would do this and that Navis would be able to communicate through it's speakers what seems like it would be such a subtle tweak is amazing.

Excellent review. I've been following Andrew Jones' career closely since he left KEF and went to TAD/Pioneer and now ELAC. Andrew is a true genius, IMHO, when it comes to designing loudspeakers. His TAD CR-1 is one of the finest speakers I've heard at any price. I have his $99/pr Pioneer SP-BS22-LR for my bedroom sytem and they are pretty amazing, too. This was an excellent review, and I liked very much how you compared the ELACs to other comparably priced market offereings, something that the traditional "print media" mags never do (they actually have policies about not doing that). Your reviews have much more credibility for me in this regard. Great explanation of the system and its capabilities for expansion. Thanks again. Oh, and BTW, I love your Fujifilm X100T or F? (I three X-mount Fujis also: X-H1, GS X-T2 and X100F). Cheers, Stephen

Once again a great presentation and review. Cudos to the team. Keep on Keeping on with your style Mr D. It does you proud. Even though I'm not in the market for this type of speaker you have made me curious about the floorstanding version. I appreciate how technological improvements are trickling down to improve lower priced items. The value these days is fantastic when compared to what I paid in the 70s & 80s for basic 'steam driven' components (even when considering inflationary increases).

Absolutely wonderful review. I have them myself and I agreed with every word. However I do think coupled with primo sources they leave the LS50W behind in most aspects (had them in my room as well). The mids are better and the bass is on another level. Imaging is the best I've ever heard on a speaker this size. I absolutely love them and I will try to scale them as good as I can in my acoustically treated room.

Hearing just the first few seconds of the music on these ELAC speakers made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. The thing that struck me was the tonal quality of the sound - it sound is just so very pleasant to listen to! Of course I know I am only listening to them via RU-vid and played back through my desktop system which consists of a Mac mini, Schitt modi DAC and Audioengine A2s, but I really like what I was hearing! They indeed very convivial!

Can't agree more: being an audiophile is not about seeking the absolute sound - which IMHO doesn't even exist even for oneself - but it's about the journey not the destination, as you put it: its about 'playing around' with gear, incrementally. Thank you for the Elac Navis ARB 51 review. Thinking of getting them as a beginner system. I am exhausted on trying to make up my mind on what speakers to get, and what amp, preamp, etc to get. Going active speakers as with these speakers will be a good starting point perhaps....Although, still back in my head will always be the thought: what am I missing out on with Klipsch Hersey lll, Forte lll, and/or JBL L 100, or Studio 590, or Stage 190? I am a horn head, and love the physicality of high efficient speakers bring to the table. And JBL, well I have grown up with them and always loved their presentation. Yes, I can still honesty say these things even after listening to numerous speakers like Totem, B&W, Dynaudio, and others....Klipsch and JBL just rule my world....But Andrew Jones is a madman and I really dig his philosophy on audio so I think I'll demo them and if I like, then that's the one.

I also compared the Navis and LS50 wireless in my home and picked the Navis for sound quality as well as for being capable of pure analog. I don't want to play vinyl through a DAC and I also don't want to be confined to what the internal DAC on LS50 wireless is capable of. If I upgrade my external DAC I don't want another internal DAC limiting what my upgraded DAC can do. I also found that the Navis scales really well as you stated. For example when I changed my DDC I immediately heard a sonic difference with the Navis. I agree the mid-range is fantastic and better on the Navis and that was one of the factors for me in keeping Navis over LS50 wireless.
