After watching the last shop vids I have come to accept that Cris is The Master of the Smoke Wrench and BFH ! Nice to see a real truck mechanic instead of all the chrome bolting video stars on You Tube 😊
Bulting new parts and chrome is easy and doesn't require much knowledge.A good mechanic will see if it is possible to renovate or if the parts should be replaced.Chris has extensive experience in both repairing and driving trucks.
Put dual straight stacks on her & she will be sounding like Orwell. She's going to sound great & when you get ready to start preparing for the paint job, she's going to look great also & if you're going to put new wheels & tires on her after the paint job is finished then she will look great, can't wait until you get her ready for prepping for the paint job & Chris is one hell of a mechanic he knows his stuff glad you got him
The way Elaine's turbo sings is great and she absolutely sounds great now that she is not getting choked by that crap that caught fire. If you haven't talked to Bruce Wilson since MATS 2024, he recently bought some Class A Trucks for the FCR Salvage company. The only reason I brought this up when you first introduced Elaine to your RU-vid channel and am bringing it up again is the fact that one of the trucks that he bought a Conventional Freightliner that looks like Elaine. I think the man, who Bruce bought the trucks from, said the Freightliner Conventional truck is the same model year 1991, and I think he said the model name is the same as Elaine. Who knows, he might have things that Elaine needs to bring her back to life.
Two of the best things about a old big cam Cummings are the Jake's ( bang like a MF ) and the sound of their turbo whistle out of straight pipe/pipes .Had a 85 Pete w/ BC and 6" straights and a Holset 60 - you could hear / find that truck idling in a south Louisiana fog at night .
Can’t wait to hear what color you guys are going with and I’m hoping you are able to get that done before putting the new stacks on her??? It really does sound strong and tough and the turbo whistle is music to my ears!!! Chris is definitely the man for getting the job done too!!! It’s also great to see some present day content and I’m hoping we can get the older stuff seen and your able to stay on point with the present day content but I get it is tuff for that to happen but I can wish I hope 🤞!!!! See you in the next one Steve!!!
FYI. I used to drive a truck with a blower on in the Army. I was told to let the truck ideal down for 5 minutes before shutting it off so the blower rpm's would slow enough so it wouldn't hurt the blower when the engine stopped pumping oil to it.
I use the LPS-2 heavy duty lubricant on my ratchet binders, it’s great stuff and lasts a long time and I thread the binders all the way in when not in use so the lubricant doesn’t dry up.
If that lubricant you bought for the chain tensioners doesn’t work out I would give Ballistol a try. Thanks for all the content- this is one of my newly found favorite channels.
Hey stave how are you doing today on this beautiful day and I like the content in the videos and I like watching your RU-vid videos and hi Chris you are doing a great job and keep up the good work and I happy that you are helping stave out
That would be the new style clutch fellas.. I install these on a daily basis. I put on input shaft, spin motor by hand to bolt up, Eaton says it can be done this way.. I’m also an Eaton certified technician..
That old Freightliner has some good lines on her. She's a good looking old truck. Chris aka the Miracle Mechanic will get her sorted out soon enough. I'm very interested in how you fit her out from here on. I think you said you were going to change the sleeper/back section for open trailer towing. I think she'll make a good worker/hauler. Thanks for all the updates. Fluid Film seems to hold up on all my old stuff, but I don't know whether you would want to sort of greasiness of the lanolin. But that is what makes it work.
You should talk to your local fire dept and see when they dispose of old fire hose. 2 1/2 or 3 inch hose will make great rub protection for your chains.
Yelp that's what I use shop foreman is the chief at one of the local volunteer fire stations so he brings in the old out of service date hoses and we cut them to size
Now there is something I've learned with the chain binders is u don't bust ur knuckles against the deck of the trailer when ur tightening the chains down
Are there plans for Elaine to get a Eaton Fuller 13-speed or 18-speed transmission; how about those running sideboards that the Freightliner FLDs have? I noticed that Orwell is missing a mud flap on the left side. Would you be installing a rear chrome style guard with new mud flaps, turn lights, brake lights and back up lights on?
I remember an old timerr telling me that once or twice a year he would soak all his binders and chains in a big metal tub of diesel...is that true or does it work...I have NO idea but it sounded legit..😂
Now to deal with the multitude of petty hassles to get Elaine reliable and suitably fitted out for your line of work, not forgetting the wood for the trailer deck. Not talking about bling, just practical stuff like good hoses throughout, and competent electrical connections, that sort of thing.
You should try dry graphite lubricant on the chain binders, it comes in an aerosol can and it goes on it's like dark gray spray paint. It will not wash off and it won't collect dirt like oil based lubricantls.
On the Cummins engine check to see if there is any fuel in the AFC line , the diaphragm may be torn causing a flow of fuel fuel into the intake manifold causing smoke .
You got air in your fuel system, i have NTC 400 running great like a 3406 but 855 cummins are terrible when they're sucking air in fuel system, yours sounds like my 350 small cam. Steve show throttle response should be interesting. Put a load on elaine should clear up if pump still good.
ℹ used Dry Silicone with Teflon it doesn’t pickup dust as it’s dry and keeps the rust down. They will not look like they have anything but, but give it a try.
28:14 Was Chris trying to commit suicide breathing in fumes. This is a hostile work environment. 30:58 I probably fix the truck where you can start it from the inside instead of in engine compartment but that would be me, hood probably weighs more than me never be able to get it open to start the thing. GREAT VIDEO Have a positive productive ❤TRUMP DAY ! 😺
sounds like dads old mack brother found him last in south Australia in a field under a pine forest said the stacks were full of herbage and birds nest it had 19 million mile on trip meter not bad for a cannon baller
You should try speed binders .they save your upper body parts . They have a grease zerk for the worm gear and i use 90w gear oil on the tube side .they come in different load ranges . Denis from Santa Rosa Ca
Hey Steve - does Elaine have a Big Cam or is it an early mechanical N14? I can't quite pin the exhaust note down but I then again I don't have a ton of experience with Cummins. I really like how Elaine sounds - the chugging at idle almost kind of sounds like an old 90's Scania of all things, to my ear. Neat!
Steve went over it on a previous episode, if I'm remembering rightly it's an NTC just before the N14, but it can be upgraded with N14 parts. Some weird transitional engine.
Seems like a wade of time, but it always pays to pressure wash the undercarriage before you disassemble a drive train, and before doing a clutch. Good job!
Steve has hauled quite a few fire trucks. Oshkosh Strikers for airports and municipal firetrucks as well. Some of the municipal ones were hauled to get refurbished and repaired and a couple being returned from the repair facility.
did y'all ever show what was wrong with Eliane's transmission I was just wondering about that I know that you showed Orwell's transmission with the broken piece
Transmission internals are ok. The old clutch went bad after being improperly adjusted. Once Steve and Chris get the brakes sorted and the engine running better, they will swap in a 13-speed gearbox.
The clutch wasn't even that bad without a working clutch break the counter shafts will keep spinning and it will be hard for the clutch to engage, that's why they make two pieces clutch brakes so you can change them out not much clutch material on them anyway
Yea it didn't have any heat marks on it at all I always check clutch brake squeeze first before even messing with the clutch adjustment. Free travel can be adjusted with the linkage.
You would have thought they would have cleaned that bell housing a little. They could have pushed the punch in from the front side and keep the dirt from getting in their faces.
