What a special performance. The artistic section of the program is brilliantly skated. The spiral into the triple loop and the beautiful layback spin show how well positioned and artistic she was. That choreography to "Reverie" showcased every move and I felt every beat of the music. Special moment!
She should have won the long program. She should have been 2nd in the short program. But this program was terrific, 5 triples - all the toe loop/toe walleys were done in combination or out of footwork, the spread eagle into the salchow and the spiral into the loop, 3 double axels! And the very best layback in this competition and of many a lady to this day. John Misha Petkavich was right - she did something very special - and I think it exemplified what a competitor and how tough we always knew she was.
I think Ito actually should have been 1st or 2nd in the short program, so Elaine 3rd. She was way ahead of her time with a double loop-triple loop and was not rewarded properly for that at all to be only 4th behind the overrated Soviet girls.
I agree with you so much on not having to hear Peggy Fleming's continuous criticism of Elaine every time she was a skating comentator and just how refreshing was it to hear skating comentator John Misha Petckevich absolute excitement in his voice at the end of her long program at these World Championships.
bronze gives her every medal color on the world podium....great to see her add the triple loop here as well......too bad she didn't stay in through 1988, since she had a stronger total-jump arsenal than what the US had at that point, and she would have developed her style even more by then as well.
The U.S only had 2 spots for the 94 Olympics and those were always going to Kerrigan and Harding, and rightfully so. Love them or hate them they were by FAR the two best U.S skaters in 94. The others- Bobek, baby Kwan, old Zayak, Kwiatkowski werent even capable of a top 10 at Lillehammer probably.
comp figures should be required for all skaters up to the age of 18 years; if a skater does not meet a min level of figures proficiency then they shouldnt be allowed to continue on in seniors; todays skater are terrible: terrible edges and so many cheated jumps. the ISU needs to gets its shit together; at the senior level they should have four categories: figures, technical program; artistic program and overall world champion in all three categories.; enought of the jumping bulshite
