One thing to take into account is the number of boss fights that happen in water, which is pretty significant (putrescent knight, golden hippos, some of the death dragons, metyr, etc.). Water increases lightning damage by 10% and decreases fire damage by the same, which makes me think lightning probably edges out fire in a couple more cases.
@grand_tourist46
@grand_tourist46 2 месяца назад
With Metyr in particular, I used mainly Knight's Lightning Spear with the lightning scorpion talisman + gravelstone seal in the off-hand + lightning cracked tear. I don't know if I was over leveled and I won't say that it trivialized the fight (the thing still hit like a truck). But when that thing went down, it went down FAST.
@PTPerdix
@PTPerdix 2 месяца назад
Golden hippo comes to mind, fire would do less damage and lightening MORE because the fight takes place in water, right? So while they may seem tied on paper, taking the arena into account causes a large shift towards lightening being preferred. Incedentally, Malenia is weak to fire, but you may want to lure her up out of the water to make the most of it. ;)

I don’t think the fluid in the Putrescent Knight arena is water. Post fight I tested standing on one of the physical structures in the arena and then walking into the fluid and my lightning absorption never changed.
@Dranikos
@Dranikos 2 месяца назад
@@zholm5842 Correct, Putrescent Knight's liquid is... uh... Liquid corpses. Much like Scadutree Avatar's arena does not contain water (it's the sap of the scadutree). Another good way to test is to simply yeet a lightning spear at the ground. If it's water, it will produce the secondary "ripple" attack for hitting it with lightning. (Golden Hippo and Metyr absolutely take place in the water for example). Another factor is, for example, it's pretty much always (actually always?) raining in the Cerulean Coast. So Lightning is VERY effective there (granted that applies only to the Ghostflame Dragon there, but KLS will just erase that son of a bitch from existence with the quickness). Might also apply to Charo's Hidden Grave now that I think of it... Lightning is slightly better than Fire overall in the DLC, if only because of these factors and one other. Knight's Lightning Spear is a MONSTER of an incantation for deleting bosses (and Lightning already had a LOT of strong tools with Lightning Strike and Ancient Dragon Lightning Strike...) and you can get KLS *very* early if you know where to go.

You may think about a video dealing with complementary damage types and adapting builds. You did it a bit here, but things like STR/FAI weapon builds have both holy and fire available in pretty much equal amounts (and standard/strike) based on a quick AoW or weapon affinity change. FAI casting build have holy and lightening in spades (and DEX/FAI). DEX is primarily associated with lightening, pierce, and slash. INT build have Magic and Cold - and while cold isn't that huge of a damage type, proccing frostbite and then switching to magic. I use this "toolset" mindset when playing and adjusting to different fights. Arcane is the one primary stat that seems all over the place, so I'm not sure an easy way to parse this. ;)

I really do think it’s important that one considers the placement of fights, if you think about the placement of so many bosses in water fire and lightning really need to be moved around, for example, despite being weakest to fire, golden hippo is in water so it becomes one of his strongest resistances actually while lightning changes to one of his weaknesses, there are tons of similar examples, for that reason I think lighting really needs to be moved up higher in the list and fire could even be dropped to last

Great video, this is definitely a good topic to explore, and the general gameplay experiences aren't dramatically different in my experience as far as spread goes; most of these resistances are similar throughout the DLC when dealing with roaming minibosses and majors. I'm rather appreciative for the Holy damage actually mattering in the DLC, it really enables you to support a lot of build variety for Faith+X builds. While Magic tends to falter a bit throughout the game, as you mentioned it has so many opportunities to leverage buffs and great tactical choices that the issue can sort of balance itself out (and has a lot of great poise-breaking benefits too).

I completely avoided any form of media about the DLC ‘til I beat it like last week, and I was using a Starscourge Greatsword build (not probably the best optimized build, but I loved the weapon), which does a good chunk of magic as its dmg type. Not saying this video said magic was ineffective/unusable, but at least on NG, I was able to get through it just fine (I struggled but I feel like it was just the aggression of the bosses more than anything, I did mean dmg to almost all of them) for the most part. Radahn was still mean, but I think he’s just particularly difficult. Can’t say he was fun to fight 😅😅

I think two variable that should be mentioned is counter damage and stance damage. Like strike weapons maybe be meh for almost every boss but you tends to break stances more. And ofc further proving pierce is best is counter damage, even if someone is slightly more resistant it can naturally buff itself based on your timing

I feel like I’d have holy lower because it does get nice utility and doesn’t get stomped like the base game, but holy suffers mainly because it’s often resisted in fights where you need it most. I used mostly holy damage weapons in the expansion and was happy to see how well they did. In the original game, that wasn't the case; also hard to complain about because it made sense lore wise. However, you get all these great holy damage weapons in the base game(especially at the end) and want to use them. I didn't play ng+. My default "get out of jail card" in the expansion was using Marika's hammer with a shield. That weapon with it's weapon skill is just super noob friendly. The ability to knock most things on their ass, disrupting their attacks and doing crazy damage while doing it is very powerful. Stance damage is nice too. In the base game, the Bloodhound Fang was my go to when things got difficult and then later the Blasphemous blade. I didn't need to use either of them in the expansion and could mostly use whatever I wanted.

In my builds - I seem to do the most damage with Quality/Cold weapons - I beat Bayle, Radahn and Messmer with Quality/Cold weapons. FS should have a Cold Shrouding Cracked Tear as well. We have Lightning, Magic, Holy and Fire...Hey FS, please make a Cold Shrouding Cracked Tear or make a Talisman that enhances Cold Attacks.
@darksharkblue4037
@darksharkblue4037 2 месяца назад
Frost isn't a damage type - it's a status like poison and rot. When you hit with a cold weapon, you're not doing "cold" damage like you would with fire from a fire weapon - instead, you're building up the cold status which will eventually do a flat % of health damage and apply a temporary debuff to the enemy. That's why it doesn't get its own wondrous physick mix like the elements you listed. If it did, it'd probably be mixed in with rot, poison, sleep etc. and temporarily buff how much status you give the enemy per attack.

This is only off in that you didn't take counter attack damage into consideration. Piercing attacks do bonus damage if the enemy hit is already in an attack animation. The spear talisman improves that even more. It doesn't change this list as piercing was already number 1, but nevertheless the counter attack damage really pushes it over the top. Its the best damage type by far!

One other factor, outside of bosses obviously, is the effect weather has on damage. I often run a set with fire and a set with lightning and just swap out whether it's raining or not when I'm out on the landscape, since water reduces the effectiveness of fire and increases it for lightning. And I always keep a holy something in the bag for those damn birds and the undead things that resurrect. Running a faith build it's often easy enough just to use a different weapon buff on a pure physical infused weapon, and usually gets better damage overall than infusing with a specific damage type.

I was sure fire was gonna be on top, considering how much fire-specific buffs you can stack (like Flame Grant Me Strenght affecting you twice, and the oil + flame tears), but now that I think about it, a lot of my best damage was coming from piercing pokes. Namely, the Fire Knight's GS charged heavy and the Flame Skewer AoW. Btw, are the fire and lightning resistances of bosses shown here counted regarding the water in the arena? Most of them have water, like Rellana, the Hippo, the Scadutree Avatar, and a few others. Maybe they have lower fire defense and higher lightning defense, but the arena makes it effectively the same. Hippo's whole arena has water, so maybe it doesn't matter as the end result is the same, but Rellana can be fought on or out of the water circle for the best damage output.

Magic Damage being the worst feels so weird. My first playthrough I did Faith and I chose to do a second playthrough before the DLC came out and I decided to do magic. Its like the most unfortunate switch since in the Base game if you do Faith/Strength and do holy damage, your going to have a bit of trouble versus some later bosses and now I have similar issue with my Intelligence/Dexterity build. Thankfully frost is strong enough to make up for the damage loss in a lot of fights, plus I will sometimes use the Rotten Crystal Sword to try and get scarlet rot

The DLC gave us many sources of holy damage buffs and resistance shreds to the point it can outscale even fire now. But honestly magic is my favorite element because there is only one enemy that hard resists it and is still easy to beat. It is also the only element with quick long-range accurate attacks and can be buffed to an absolutely absurd level. Ranni's dark moon will frostbite and shred 20% magic resistances and you can still golden vow and even magic circle. I can't think of any other damage type that can inflict damage this heavy and accurately, with no immunes even though holy is now getting there. I just don't think lightning beats magic in any way even with the new spells, magic has stance damage variants too and still has much better buffs. Hell, even my faith characters use magic (staff of guilty) just because even gimped magic is just better than any faith variant outside of elemental weaknesses. Physical damage gets too little damage buffs for me to even consider using, especially piercing which has zero long range application outside of bows which as fun as they are, don't even compete with magic at all.

The fire/lightning section is super misleading because they don't take into account how much rain and water there is in this DLC. E.g., against Putrescent Knight, Fire deals 10% less and lightning deals 10% more, because of the water on the ground. The Golden Hippo and Scadutree Avatar also have their weaknesses mitigated by the water arena.

Melee damage only ever comes from the melee portion of an attack. Oversimplifying, if the great katana deals 100 physical damage, and 100 holy, then before accounting for motion values or other modifiers, an attack will ALWAYS deal the 100 holy as is, but the 100 Physical will be dealt as Thrusting with the pokes, and (iirc) Standard with the swings. Elemental and physical damage never really "mix", and there's no such thing as Holy Thrusting damage, or Fire Strike. A weapon can absolutely deal both of those damages at once, but these are effectively separate instances of damage, that are calculated simultaneously. (This also means that, in the case of say, the Coded Sword, the weapon's melee damage type is actually completely irrelevant, as it deals no physical damage to actually use this damage type, only pure Holy.) The Counter damage modifier is specific to Thrusting, and will ONLY modify the physical damage on thrusting attacks, not the elemental portions of those attacks. And because it can occasionally be confusing. Standard is the damage type usually associated with swords, axes, and the like, while Slashing tends to be used specifically for things like Curved Swords, or Daggers. They're separate damage types.

what does it mean when a damage type says slash / pierce?

Some attacks deal slashing and other attacks do piercing damage. Raksasha’s great katana for example has light attacks that do slashing damage, but heavy attacks that do piercing damage

Holy damage is the only true answer because it gives bosses that resist it a fair fight against the Tarnished.
