The 'beside the great bridge' site of grace is way closer to Placidussax. There wasn't enough shitty boss run-ups in this game so Wraff had to self impose one to complain about it. 😂
I totally felt that emphatic "fuck you" when you defeated Malenia. She has since become one of my favorite bosses from an abstract perspective, but my least favorite to actually fight.
I didn't have to respec for Malenia but I did have to remove my armor so I could do light rolls. I simply could not dodge her rapid slashes with medium rolls.
I'd be curious to conduct a large poll among the community to see how our opinions and feelings have changed in the past two years. If you had asked me how I felt about Elden Ring's end game bosses and content in March/April of 2022, I probably would have agreed with Wraff and a lot of other people about Mohg, Malenia, and the final boss rush in Farum Azula and Ashen Leyndell. But current me, who is now two years older and more mature and who has now logged 500+ hours in this game, has a drastically different opinion. Maliketh, Mohg, Godfrey, Radagon, etc. are some of my favorite boss fights in the whole game. I love their movesets and the rhythm and pacing of their fights. Even Malenia has become an A-tier or S-tier boss to me. There are only a few things in her second phase that I'm not so keen on, but otherwise I really like the fight. She was just a massive skill check for all of us. And here's the thing, even after 500+ hours, I still very much consider myself an average player. I make mistakes and get hit constantly. I'm no Distortion2 or Mitchriz or MissMikkaa. I don't have the experience level or institutional knowledge like Gino or Aggy or itzCBD. I don't have the dexterity and muscle memory of Blanxz, Forsa, Catalystz, or any other speedrunners. A boss like Malenia, Mohg, or Maliketh does have an inherent skill cap. But I don't think that its nearly at the exaggerrated level we thought at launch. I think we let our emotions and criticisms get ahead of us and that just simple practice was enough to overcome these things. And after that practice was done and victory was achieved, so many things I used to hate about the game suddenly opened up and my enjoyment increased drastically. I think that's possible even for the most casual of players. It just takes focus and some commitment.
I'd be interested in a similar poll too tbh. Sadly I'm one whose opinion of the bosses has remained the same or worsened over time with this game, especially the endgame. I literally just stop playing around Maliketh because I'd rather start a new playthrough then do the endgame boss rush. And that's despite the design/music of all of thosebosses being so great. And it's the only Fromsoft game that has me feeling this way. Curious to see what dlc will be like
Some endgame bosses are well designed, like Godfrey seems to be generally popular. But otherwise I have to side with Wraff on this. Malenia can eventually become a good boss when you understand the rhythm of her attacks (after dozens of hours of practice), in my opinion the sudden difficulty spike is too big. There are a few standard builds that can almost trivialize her, but if you just so happen to have picked the wrong build, you're in for a terrible ride. This leads to everyone having a completely different experience against her. Some people get beat up, others overcome her after an hour. Skill is, ironically, not the issue. The worst offenders have got to be Elden Beast and Placidusax. What were Fromsoft thinking? They're visually stunning, don't get me wrong. My goodness are they epic. But fighting them is a chore.
Many areas when entering first, the design is so that you're actually facing where the final boss is. First step in Limgrave you're facing the stormveil castle in the very background. Same goes for Mohgwyn palace and a few other areas Bloodborne has the same quality too. At the top of my mind I remember the nightmare frontier when you first enter with amygdala's arena in the very background
Fromsoft is GREAT at showing you where you're going. In Farum Azula when you first see the inside of the area, you can see Maliketh's arena where you're going to end up at the end.
@Wraff Indeed you mentioning it in this episode reminded of the other examples. So subtle sometimes but so enjoyable when you realize it. It applies to quite a few spirit NPCs too and the direction they're looking at, like the spirit at top of the Castle Sol looking towards Haligtree. Or even the Divine Towers and the view direction. Like Radahn''s and Malenia's views are towards each other as far as I remember

It's possible that because "Azula" sounds like "Azul" for "blue", it somehow became associated with "sky". I know the sky isn't blue here but that could be due to the storm.
Well played! You overcoming the Malenia struggle is inspiring me again to try to beat her on my own. After 30 or so attempts I was like Dang it I'm summoning on every playthrough so far Also the amount of lore you get from Placid Usax from just a few seconds was amazing

I'm running a dual whip build in PvE right now and I've had fun with till Maliketh. I cannot dodge some of his attacks with the L1. It's just too slow. First weapon where I encounter this problem.
It's 2024, but watching Malenia defeat reactions are still fun to watch) I wish there will be a very strong boss in DLC but without "waterfowl dance 2.0". Partially to behold people spending hours and then scream to the heaven and partially because I like fighting strong bosses😁
Off topic, but hearing you say Aldrich out loud finally made me realize that his name is just Eldritch with some letters changed. They really aren't subtle, are they?
