Elden Ring - Hidden faces of enemy NPCs 

Edit: I made an error with Vyke. His tattoo is 3, not 2. The game starts counting tattoos from 0, but the menu starts counting from 1, so I had to add 1 to every NPC's tattoo value to reflect the difference, and I accidentally missed Vyke. Fia's Champions are also apparently able to copy random players, but the face used for them appears to just be a generic placeholder instead of having different faces like the Knights of the Great Jar. Unrelated to that, it bears repeating that only NPCs that use the player model have facedata to borrow. Any NPC with a unique character model can't be copied this way, so it's not possible to get the face of characters like Melina, Ranni, or Rennala.

Me: "Wow, seeing their faces really humanizes these characters for me." *See Preceptor Mirriam* Me: "...that fucking bitch."

I guess the devs can also relate to that feeling when you spend 2 hours in the character creation menu but then proceed to put on a closed helmet for the rest of the game.

Moongrum looks so noble and proud, definitely did not deserve that push off the elevator ending I gave to his life

What's crazy to me is that when I became a bloody finger for Mohg, I'd thought it be cool to put his symbol on my character's forehead! Kinda like a Majin style thing. Seeing this, I'm blown away that's actually the original bloody finger style for NPCs. Super cool!

Me fighting Vyke: "Okay, try not to be intimidated. Just imagine him in his underwear..." "OH NO, HE'S HOT!"

Old Knight Istvan being one of the youngest-looking of the entire bunch is funny. Other than that, they all looked fantastic and in line with what you'd imagine.

Kinda makes sense that Vyke would be youthful, it also explains a lot about his choices if you think about it. He clearly had a strong sense of duty and good resolve since he was the only other tarnished to almost be Elden Lord, no small feat as we know. But also you could guess he was a noble person, if not in social standing then definitely in character, because he gained the favor of not just any dragon but an ancient dragon of renown and was able to more or less master red lightning meaning he was skilled, disciplined and dedicated. But his main flaw was most likely an innocent one,aka his youth. A veteran wouldn't have grown attached to his maiden, even if he did he would've put duty first and let her sacrifice herself, but Vyke didn't. Again, we don't know if he was manipulated into it by shabriri or the fingers or if he did it to save his maiden because, as often happens with young men, he grew fond of her. Or maybe it was both? When he found out what had to happen he might've searched for alternatives and been an easy target for chaos that way. Not unlike Anakin being manipulated by Sidious because Anakin, too, turned to the dark side out of fear of losing his maiden. Clearly, Vyke wasn't lusting for power(at least, not for intentionally malicious or greedy reasons), after all he had more than enough and ,as far as we know, didn't let it go to his head. He had the skill, will and resolve of a seasoned and honorable soldier, but was still a naive young man at heart. Probably not older than his early twenties, maybe even younger. I see Vyke as being a classic tragic hero. He had all the makings of Elden Lord and all the right stuff to be a great warrior, but his fatal flaw was the same as any other young man's : his heart

it's funny how all the default face for the players look ugly af, but then the faces of masked npc's are extremely well done.

It makes sense to me that Vyke wouldn't have a burned body. Vyke didn't become a true lord of chaos, because he was wearing his armor when the three fingers embraced him. Hence the melted armor. So he never actually took in the frenzied flame.

"The knights of the Great Jar seem to be able to copy random players instead of using presets." That explains why all 3 of my most recent fights were all using RoB katana!

Eleonora lacking the tattoo makes some sense...from yura's dying dialogue it really sounds like he originally knew her. She may only be masquerading the role.

I think Eleanora's lack of Tattoo makes sense, based on the crystal she drops, just like you she intends to take down Mohg from the inside.

Vyke is one of my favorite characters in the lore. A hero who fell, and nobody knows why. Lansseax's favored knight, the only Tarnished before the player character to come close to becoming the Elden Lord. Suffering from the madness, locked up in an Evergaol. One thing I found interesting is the fact that, in Vyke's Evergaol, he's using his spear but is able to cast Vyke's Dragonbolt on it, which enchants it with lightning. Only, Vyke's spear that the player can attain isn't able to be enchanted at all. Did something change about Vyke as he waited in the Evergaol? I say all this because I'm glad that Vyke's face looks somewhat noble. Adds to his character, I think.

Watching this video I realized Henricus is a Recusant, not a Bloody Finger - which means the Volcano Manor had a hit out on you before you joined. BUT ALSO he's wearing the armor of Gideon's servants, this along with the fact you can find that armor in Rykard's boss room, seem to imply that Gideon was very interested in infiltrating the Recusants - perhaps he thought they were the biggest threat to Marika (before your character comes along).

For me,all of this faces represent the lore of every one of them,like the brute faces some of them have because they wear heavy armor,or the old and very pale skin the mages have.This game is full of details and I absolutely love it

Dude Vyke is the coolest looking character with and without armor.

It makes sense that Vyke’s body wasn’t burnt. The Three Fingers grasped his armor, not his naked body, like they did with the player. You can see the his armor melted with the impression of the fingers.

It's cool that this face data helps reveal the lore in customization options. The Bloody Fingers all wearing that mark in red helped me to realize it's a symbol for Mohg's trident.

"Old Knight" seems to be the only one not to match his character, non-hostile npcs included

That's so cool how Errant sorcerer Wilhelm looks exactly like his mask. If only they had given him the blindfold to match it exactly. I love these videos!

it's so cool you can remake each npc in the character creator. also I can appreciate you putting all the values for people to recreate these characters on their own. not sure if you did it all by hand through raw data mining, or someone else or you made an easy way to see all those values, but whatever the case bravo! the community thanks you, and this video will be useful for years to come.

There's always something intimidating how their armour or clothing has a personality of it's own, that, when you take them off, it shows the human behind and I have a particular conflicting feeling when I put a face to the armour Maybe thats just me

I'm really impressed by the thought that went into a lot of these characters. Many of them really look like they fit their role or appearance. For me, Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm (3:36) really jumped out. He looks similar-ish to his helmet and very obviously was designed by someone with a clear intent. Not as many placeholder/low effort faces as previous Souls NPCs.

I feel like Juno Hoslow and old Knight Istvan should have their player models switched. It would fit them a lot better than what they have now.

This just shows us how much love developers put into the game. Knowing that the face wont even be visible, yet still making unique face looks is just awesome. For example Tragoth fits his style quite well. If this was an EA title they would all have a same face or no face at all…

Now I'm gonna picture Preceptor Miriam as a senile old librarian who thinks we're trying to sneak in an overdue book so we don't have to pay fees.

I didn't actually expect Vyke to have the burnt body, cause the burns are on his armor. I assumed that's part of why he failed to be the Lord of Chaos. He toucha dah fingies wrong.

You don't know how much this gave me inspirations and guidelines on making my characters...thank you Zullie!

Bless you for putting all the values up Zullie. I really struggle with the fine tuning of character creation, but with this as a reference I think I might make something that looks less off.

I've always really appreciated the fact that Fromsoft actually detailed the faces of their NPCs like this, even if they're under a helmet and 99.999% of players will never see them

I like how you substituted Zullies Set with the Snow Witch set in this game, fits very well considering the origin of the MLGS in this game.

Man, the detail with Vyke is great. The grey part on the left of his face is because of his melted armor. It seeped into his skin which is pretty uncomforting to think about.

I hope you do a close up of bosses! Such as Radahn, never really get a good look at his face in game.

With Vyke, the reason his body isn't scarred by the frenzied flame is because he wore his armor when he was embraced.

Given the cut content about Vyke's maiden trying to burn herself at the smouldering church, Anastasia's burned face makes it seem like she might actually be a later version of that finger maiden, driven mad by Vyke.

Interesting that Okina has a similar hair and beard to Yura. Maybe they’re relatives, or maybe the land of reeds just hasn’t invented the shaving razor yet.

Vyke doesn’t have the burn marks the player can get, because when he went to accept the fire from the 3 fingers, he wasn’t naked. So it never transferred to his body and instead it messed up his armor. This is probably also why he wasn’t able to succeed in turning the world to chaos

Thanks so much for putting this together! I think it's notable that a lot of the female NPCs have the same face shape: a very thin, straight line of a nose, no chin, a tiny and downward-sloping mouth. Even though their hair, blemishes and marks, and armor differentiate and characterize them, there's noticeably more variety in male NPC faces than female.

So happy to have new stuff for you and all the other great lore gods to discover 🙏

Despite how massive the game is, they still find the time to add little details that 99% of players will never see.

This is so cool. I love how they took the time to design faces for characters that we'll never see the faces of. Really makes them feel like part of the world.

Makes me happy how unique all the faces of npcs are in Elden Ring, even if it is a detail that most players won't ever see it makes the characters feel more thought out and interesting.

The expressions on their faces along with the music really dig deep into mystery behind these characters and the feeling of the overall environment of the Lands Between, as well as revealing how the creators were feeling on a given day. Very somber.

I love the fact that they put the time into detailing all of the npcs even if most of their faces wont be seen. Not only that but the faces really fit the characters as well. Also never thought i'd be saying this but man eater mildred (anastacia) is pretty cute!

The tattoos held by the bloody fingers not being on Elenora may be proof that she grew corrupted by draconic power as opposed to Mohg’s and is only called a bloody finger for her killing spree rather than being an actual devotee of Mohg. It would explain why Yura warns against draconic power.

I salute whoever’s job or jobs it was to make such well made and in character npc faces that most people will never see

you are an absolute hero. with Maureen's face as a base I finally managed to break through the uncanny valley that can be Elden Ring faces

I don't know if anybody else mentioned this in the comments so imma write it just to be sure. The first playthrough I did of Elden Ring was offline, and the knights of the jar were exactly the three you have in the video, they DO appear but only if you're offline, and every time you die to them, they will remain the same 3 (no other in the pool as I can see in your video now). The second/third I did was online, and the npcs we're random as you mentioned. I did suspect they we're taken from the player pool and not randomly generated because 95% of them we're using the Moonlight katana. That was a pretty huge giveaway. Keep up the good work!

It’s crazy how much more context and storyline it gives just seeing a character’s actual face

The sisters using blindfolds seems to suggest that scarlet rot stems from the eyes before spreading to the rest of the body. I wonder if this has anything to do with the idea that grace is something physical that exists within people’s eyes? Maybe scarlet rot preys upon the guidance of grace, which is why it’s so deadly to the tarnished.

Millicent and her sisters, trying to kill off the mad ones before the flower blooms, makes me think Miyazaki liked his Drakengard 3 playthrough

It's awkward that the "Old Knight Istvan" looks so young. Maybe he is a reference to Guin Saga, the inspiration of Berserk (which in turn influenced Fromsoft greatly). One of the main characters there is not only called Istavan, but is also a seasoned mercenary and his face looks very similiar.
