The problem with this is that if you're not glued to her when she flies up, there's not enough time to circle around her and do the roll before she comes down. I managed to pull it off once, but I can't do it again for the life of me.
That’s actually the easier situation. Unless you’re in the worst possible spot, just a hair too far for the sprint, you can’t make the run back either. Otherwise though, it’s possible to get some distance between you and the first half of the attack, and the second half is the same.
Nah you can evade it by running and then jumping as soon as she touches the ground during her first flurry. I've found this method incredibly useful.@@ElmaXC
I actually found out that it is possible to perfect dodge waterfowl with a medium load, if timed correctly, and most of the times, if not all, it's possible to avoid the first barrage by instantly running away when she flies up, even if you're very close. You just have to keep running and jump when she's about to finish the first barrage, as the hitbox near the end of it hits close to the ground/torso down, and jumping avoids it. Something happens when you jump at the end of the sprint. I don't know what exactly, but perhaps it messes with her tracking AI and it misses the last hits. IF you do it properly (running/jumping at the right time).
That's what most people who pull it off consistently say (not just running but sprinting apparently) and you gotta stay really close but not quite hugging her because right underneath her is a zone that will stop you, then you roll just when she moves, I don't quite manage it consistently enough yet personally, but from what I've seen and (sometimes) experienced, this is the way.
Its the stupidest rng fight ever, i see people beat her and she does the move once, i just started fighting her and she did it 2 times each phase biggest bullshit boss ever lol
Waterfowl is the only ability in the game that is litterally undodgeable by rolling in melee range without some stupid manipulations. ANY attack is dodgeable by one or several rolls OR gives you enough time to run away. Malenia just uses waterfowl and if you're close or in attack animation, you're gonna get screwed. Imo, it's a bad designed ability if you need tons of RU-vid guides to figure out how to consistently dodge it.
@@tk_fred Nihil is an exception, because it's designed not to kill you, but to take several flasks from you. Or you can just use crystal tear to completely negate it
@@chuvits217 no, it's designed to make you find purifying crystal tear in the opposite side of the map. You can block waterfowl, you can dodge it with bloodhound's step, you can dodge it when you're far away from it, you can even dodge it close without any additions. But in your opinion undodgable nihil is just a specific attack, and waterfowl - just bad designed ability. OK then :)
@@tk_fred you don't need crystal tear to deal with Nihil. You just need to drink a flask after each cast. This ability is specifically designed to take some flasks from you. Imo, if ability isn't dodgeable or cannot be dealt with basic instruments that the game gave you, then it's a bad design
@@chuvits217 imo if you can use basic mechanics (just roll in time) to dodge spell it can't be broken by default (see malenia waterfowl). If you cant dodge spell (Mohg's nihil) - its broken. That's simple. If your agrument is "flask dodge", you can just shield the waterfowl attack, you don't even need to level up your stamina that much to do a full block, its just another basic mechanic the game gave you, like flask.
Very elegant. Didn't know the first charge of first attempt is parryable. Nice. Will have to learn that too. Otherwise I can parry pretty much everything without getting hit too often, but I cheat the first part of the dance using Vow of the Indomitable. Will have to get rid of that and learn to play. Looks reasonable on a contoller, but will have to see how I'm going to pull this off with mouse and kb =)

I guess that at the moment you jump, her tracking is still calculating your position at the last spot where the character touched the ground. Since jumping forward provides a considerable distance from it, along with the fact that the end of waterfowl's hitbox hits closer to the ground, all of that combined makes you actually avoid it. Regardless of my theory, it works.
I dodged it first time by running away, then dodging the second I see that blade roll left into my anus. This is much better for staying closed ranged, and tbh I didn't even know you could parry her so thank you! Very helpful
I cannot ever get this one to reliably work, I have no idea why. I usually just walk to her left, then dodge in the same direction twice, then towards her for the 2nd flurry and just move for the last. Pretty much never get hit. Another thing I dscovered you can do if at a slightly longer distance is sprint to her UNLOCKED, walk to the left, then at the very last second as she comes down bloodhound to the right, then re-lock and dodge as normal. The riskiest and least rewarding method I found was to wait until the very last second, then bloodhound to her hard left, then dodge backwards. However, it's a coin toss whether you get clipped, it never works reliably. That said, it's almost always pathetic damage, so it's not a big deal. But I almost always use the first method. Ironically, I can't seem to learn this particular dodge you show here even though it looks really slick. I've gotten it a couple times and I know what has to happen in theory, but no luck even with the practice tool to lock her into constant waterfowl. Lol. Good guide though.
hey! this is super impressive. i could only dream of being able to do this lol not to mention the perfect parries. would this work with medium load btw?
Today I beat her first time without spirit summons and with a tanky Strength-Build. This and other videos helped.:D Not that I could evade it reliably, but It was good enough.
Ohh... So she tracks you at the beginning, and for that reason you circle around her until she locks on, but you keep on running just a bit and/or roll into a different direction.. Wow
Impressive, but if you have enough time to circle her properly, you can almost certainly just do the sprint away and jump strat, which requires very little skill.
Problem is, when I'm at this close range I'd usually be in the middle of melee attacks (I don't use parry). Even if I saw it and wanted to react I couldn't cancel my animation.
this is why I love from software game, you can parry and dodge if you are calm and not in hurry, actually contrary to what people believe, most people react too fast instead of too slow. From soft taking advantage of people who used to react to everything quickly by making enemy atk a sec slower lol
I have fought her so many times now that I have all of her combos memorised and I can completely no hit her until she pulls out waterfowl dance at close range mid attack.😫😫
Its messed up that this didnt help me in the end but whatever ig. I swear most other rune-bearers are more difficult than malenia when you put this damned attack aside. Props to fromsoft for making something that hurt my feelings truly.
It doesn't matter as long as you do a full circle! It's impossible to do it while locked on, if you try it you're basically dead. One thing you have to be careful about is that her hitbox extends to the ground and she may block you while doing the circle.
@ObWanShinobi i had the same doubt like a year ago while watching streamers play dark souls. Since i couldnt find any answer for this, i tried this type of grip by myself. To the present day i cannot play this games with another grip. I wont lie to you, at first it sucked a lot, i was really uncomfy and my hand hurted. Once you get used to, you can run everywere while free roaming with the camera, not to mention, the “unlocked on” bosses gets way easier and satisfying
@@obwanshinobi517 he don't need to, you just put your right index finger on the four buttons, both thumbs on the respective joysticks and use the right middle finger for the triggers. If you want to practise, load up sekiro or metal gear rising or Cod games or any game that is single player and allows you constant retries without annoying runbacks. This is especially useful when playing games that need multiple inputs at the same time, like a shooter game or dark souls 2 (remember? No omni directional movement)
yup this game is the only fromsoft game with a genuine difficulty slider. you can go int/dex with moonveil and spells and mimic tear and it plays itself, start subtracting some of those factors and it gets harder. but genuinely, just remember to have fun. dont make it so hard you end up hating the game or get burnt out. it is a video game after all and is supposed to be fun
@kgaming101 thanks bro, it been over a year and I beat her with the bloodhounds fang I believe, it was an amazing boss fight and I was on her for around 10 hours haha but after I beat her I used her sword to beat the game because it was easily my favorite boss fight in the entire game
This vid highlights one of my biggest complaints about Malenia. She is just way too passive phase one. At the end there she just slowly walks towards you.
@@sirpuffball6366 The only safe openings in both phases is after attacks. In Elden Ring it is very rarely a good idea to attack a boss when they're just walking/standing.
Nope, this doesnt work. Gotta love how people get lucky once or twice with perfect distance to her when she starts it and when she straight up misses half of the combo because of terrain, and upload it on youtube as if it was "the method".
