In patch 1.0 the description of the page set was different (and better imo) and said: "A fine outer garment made from thick cloth. Costume of pages who serve the nobility. Among the highborn, those with naturally smaller physiques were considered to lack the full blessing of the Erdtree, and thereby trained as pages. There were said to be many among their number who positively brimmed with potential." It's technically cut content but I like to think that this lack of the full blessing of the Erdtree is also the reason why the vulgar militiamen were born so short
It reminds of how deformities were often seen in medieval times as a sign of internal evil that God made your body show. The height thing showing incomplete blessings could just be a conclusion drawn by the people of the lands between actually showing a lack of grace. What is funny to me is how the Tarnished aren't very tall either, so there is just more fuel on the whole "graceless" discrimination thing for them.
Huh, that makes more sense from a world building perspective. But there's something especially tragic and Soulsy about the new description I am genuinely torn.
There are also two pages guarding the chest with the winged scythe inside. Maybe that could also add something to their lore. Tombwards ruins in the Weeping peninsula.
You also get the Page Ashes (he's a great summon, btw, especially early game and +1 to +3!) in a catacomb in Liurnia, specifically on what looks like a big sarcophagus with an Omen praying nearby. Maybe that specific page was protector or traveled with that Omen, and the Omen mourns the loss of his page?
The page in Raya Lucaria definitely served the carian royals, they block the path to primeval sorcerer azures staff. This makes sense because he was exiled
Here's a question about Pages: How can these plainclothed noble servants tank any hit from any weapon smaller than a greatsword without even a *flinch?*
9:34 yes it is their music. If u sneak up behind the one in Leyndell u can hear their flute playing which is pretty relaxing imo. If you kill them it stops.
I believe the paiges were more likely considered assassins in Elden ring due to their “obscure” nature. Plus it’s suggested that an Estoc is great for piercing armor suggesting that the Paiges had a more sinister role in service to the nobles
I have been wondering about these guys for a while! Their armor intrigued me. But I never expected to see a lore video like this, so it was a lovely surprise. Your shorter-form videos are perfect for this sort of topic, and very comfortable in length. I enjoyed this a lot
I think the "nobles" that the descriptions are referring to are the wandering nobles as they are sometimes found protecting them behind carriages like the one in the consecrated snowfield.
It also connects them to Miquella a bit surprisingly with how they guard St. Trina’s Torch in the area you mentioned, also the high pages are essentially using a Pulley Crossbow a weapon that Miquella designed
I’m slightly embarrassed to reveal how many times I was killed by the Paige in lyendell just before I was about to enter the city in my first play though that flame ability was deadly
That page was the single hardest thing in Leyndell. Why is there some random page with a triple shot crossbow that one shots you if any of them hit you and the triple shot lasts longer than your roll I-frames? I died four times just trying to get my runes back. Eventually, I just went around that room.
Maybe the Pages where mercenaries, payed by the lords to pick up some of the slack their armies couldn't handle, especially after the shattering. This would explain their clothing not representing any demigod or lord, and why their fighting style was so unique. Why show conformity to a specific army, whether that be in appearance or fighting style, if any lord could hire you? Their fighting style was developed independently, due to their training before being hired, and their clothes being somewhat high quality could be due to them trying to maintain a level of professionalism. And Pages concealing their identity could be apart of this contract, with lords not wanting them to be recognizable by anyone, so the lord isn't shamed too badly for hiring outside forces because their main army was too weak, and so that the Pages wouldn't steal any sort of credit from the army as well, just fighting as paid faceless warriors. And since a lot of armies where devastated by the shattering wars, Pages where probably hired in mass, being paid a lot of money, resulting in them showing their commitment to the lord that pays them and not leaving their post, even though the lord they defended was weak themselves, the desire for the money being too high than them finding somewhere else to go.
I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but there used to be a depraved perfumer in the Village of the Albinaurics that played the same song the pages play. I wonder why they cut that. This might be an odd topic to ask about, but do you think you could try taking a poke at the lore surrounding some of the odd one-off armaments, like the Shield of the Guilty or the Cane Sword? I think there might be some interesting stories to investigate there.
I know its been six months but I wonder if it has to do with the idea that the perfumers arts seem to have connections if I recall to the Nox and alchemy both literally and philosophically? (Alchemy also having a lot to do with the mind and a sense of self in a sense) So perhaps Elden ring was hinting that at a point some Pages did in fact begin to think more so for themselves with the art learning more than what their nobles/society would ask and possibly joined perfumers? Basically breaking away from the only being an appendage to a noble as Square said: Why would they?
Ngl I wish that if you wore an entire set of armor and went to the enemy who’s armor your wearing they were docile to you, it’d make for some pretty funny moments
@Square Top Gaming I was wondering if you could look into why you can see the Erd Tree and the Giants Forge from one isolated rubble island in Farum Azula which can be accessed from Four Belfort towers. You can even see a massive waterfall to the open ocean that farum azula floats over, it seems from the bay which all the divine towers sit within too. The popular assumption is that farum azula is physically outside the lands between in time and space or at least dragon lord pacidixax is. This makes that assumption a bit more complicated imo. I ran acrossed on my second thorough playthrough and noticed the sight is clear from this spot unlike the rest of farum azula
Lol, this post has inspired my next character. The fun part is that many of the weapons seen in that show can be replicated with the Vulgar Militia’s choice of arms, lol.
Your words at the end made me realize u or someone needs to do a video on the nobility themselves. Why are they all skeletal and almost zombie like but then all their underlyings are spry, nimble, strong etc. i dont know if it’s been tested but i feel like even the weakest of Godricks forces can defeat the strongest noble in the game. Sure the age of plenty is long gone so i don’t expect nobles to be flourishing its just odd that some of the strongest forces in the land choose to guard over decrepit shells of people no matter how loyal u are at some point u have to recognize that those in charge are weak and incapable
To me the page ashes depic more a bastard son, "by accident of being born into obviously" the noble made a mistake and had a bastard son, to hide it, it becomes a page he will be trained like a noble but will just be and will be treated like a servant
First time playing Elden Ring I was in the academy searching for hidden loot when I see a dude (Page) with a crossbow and 3 rapid exploding arrows coming towards me at first I was shocked I go again he killed me 3 times on the 4th time I said what the fuck is this bullshit and I was about to throw my PlayStation out of the window, back then they were so annoying. Keep up the good work
Man when i faced them first time they're annoying especially their crossbow lol but like the page why are their faces hidden? Are they trying to hide something and who did they serve? And i love ur videos much!
The basic idea with the hoods is that it “unpersons” them, that is they no longer had their own identity. They were faceless servants at that point for nobility, only ever existing to fulfill tasks for their appointed noble and were to never question that duty. By hiding the face, you’re hiding who are you essentially are as an individual, now being used by someone else more so as a tool than a human being. Brutal, but pragmatic to be sure.
I think cozmic was basing that idea on the fact that Miquella originally practiced fundamentalism, before he abandoned it since it wasn’t helping with Malania’s “condition.” There’s a theory that Miquella was the one who built the design for the pulley line of bows/crossbows (Goldmask is another, but he shows no inkling of being a warrior and instead a philosophical chad), and some people believe there’s a connection between Ranni’s goal of the “Age of the Stars” and the Eclipse that Miquella potentially wanted to bring forth, possibly as a way to bring Godwyn back to full life with both soul and body (the legendary shotel found there can use death blight). If that’s the case, then that could explain the high pages as being agents of the Haligtree sent out to accomplish various tasks. Though admittedly that’s also a bit of a stretch and making several assumptions; the release of the DLC could provide more info.
@@square-table-gaming Firstly, I apologize because I've been using a different language to play the game, but I'll try to explain to you and convey the meaning behind it. In both of these special ranged weapons, it mentions "the prodigy who studied the Golden Oders of Fundamentalism." I believe this is referring to Miquella, in accordance with the definition of high-level Pages, who wear sophisticated noble attire. Therefore, Miquella fits these two criteria very well.
@@JC-eo2qe Yes, while there is no explicit evidence, based on the current information in the game, Miquella is the most suitable candidate for this role. This includes another ranged weapon that can be found in the volcano called "Pot Cannon(or Jar cannon)." Indeed, this weapon could potentially be created by Miquella to aid in Montgert's assault on the volcan.
Is it possible that nobles are undesired noble sons? As a result of cheating noble's wives. If natural births are seen as a sin in Lands between, maybe Pages are seen as a blasphemous people, and this is why they considered an "accident"'and born in obscurity.
