I feel bad for Messmer, even in his boss intro he sounds tired, and is flat out confused as to why we're here. Only for us to push him to a mental breakdown at the prospecr of failing his mother, the goddess that crowned him as the monstrosity to haunt the lands of shadow before abandoning him, forever wiping his name from history. That he spends his last breath cursing Marika is heartbreaking, he never had a chance to begin with. This was his fate from the beggining, to forever live as a tool of the golden order, their monster.
Agreed here too. I immediately noticed how dejected he sounded. He honestly sounded like he didn't WANT particularly to fight us, but he knew he had to, in order to do his job This man is the eldest demigod by far, very likely one of the strongest, firstborn of Marika, and yet he was used as nothing more than a tool of terrorism and genocide. There is so much tragedy on all sides, I honestly wish we could have just explained what was up to him. Especially in the late game, knowing that the one who ruined his future was destroyed might have given him some closure at least
The voice acting is so good: he sounds genuinely surprised when a Tarnished wanders into his throne room...but alas, he is still loyal even after being abandoned for so long. He's almost like Morgott, in a fashion: the latter stayed loyal to the same thing that shunned and hated him, while Messmer was desperate for love and approval, until the very end. "Mother....Marika....a curse upon thee..."
It sounds so incredibly suffocating and oppressive, perfect for Messmer being confined to the Shadow Realm all his life and used as a tool for the Golden Order
It genuinely hits so much harder to listen to once knowing his backstory. A musician reacting to this said it gives a "Falling down" emotion. It honestly does.
Impressive that he was in denial about being abandoned for so long to the extent he happily filled his role for this long...and FINALLY curses her in death.
@@jamesnorman9160 I don t think he denied her abandoning him. After all the Shaman Village directly outside of Shadow Keep has it s Tree sentinel patrolling after even the passage being hidden away. Her Divine Beasts still help hold the keep but overall there is no evidence of her, even one Knight Commander and a lot of other "spirits" give us dialogue about her abonding everyone in the lands of shadows. His entry Line "Mongrel Intruder, .. .. Yet my purpose standeth unchanged.. ..Those stripped by the grace of gold shall all meet death; in the embrace of Messmers Flame." Aka "In the name of my Mother; Death to everyone opposing the Eardtree.". However there are some very interesting depictions about Marika statues having the base serpent or whatever coiled around them. Messmer is a direct offspring of Marika, the abyssal Serpent has a theme in the Lands Between being named the "God Devouring Serpent", which we don t even kill in our fight with Rykard btw, he s literally immortal and unkillable just as the snake. Anyways Marika is a god and thus should be on the menu of that thing.. Messmer is direct offspring of Marika and if I remember correctly, he too was born cursed with his now apparent theme. There is a description in the game of "Marikas Sin", which is very likely visible in the story trailer with Marika ascending the Gate of Divinity by removing some sort of Golden Essence from what might be a fallen god.. ..or maybe a dead serpent? (Messmer has white skin in his second phase when the abyssal Serpent takese over.) He of course felt abandoned and lonely but in the 3rd Church of Marika Melina (his sister btw) drops us lore that "Marika spoke to her first Son" "Brave Warrior, you will wage war in a Land far, far away, where you will live.. and die.". And it s not like he had little time thinking his decision trough.. He must have felt incredibly forsaken but still held firm until the very end, defending the Tree and his kindling with his very own life as his only purpose, for his beloved Mother. "Embrace Thine Oblivion, As Shall I." Really puts a theme on how far he s going to go with this, I think. With Messmer now gone in the end there is nothing anymore "containing" the abyssal serpent, for which Marika even gave him that golden eyes, acting as a seal, wich he removes in phase 2. Even by ending him I do not think that this is the end of the abyssal serpent; given the enteritey of the lands ancient past and items essentually have revelations to the whole spiral and spiraltree conspiracy. There seems to be a lot more on the line. I do not think that it was him cursing Marika. I believe it was almost a spoken out loud thought of a warning, for whats to come for her, now that he s gone. The only Thing I want is that the Tarnished canonically scales Enir Ilim and eradicates the last hornsent, that were hidden behind the Roots. Similar fashion to the hornsent "patrols" in the abyssal woods on the way to Midras. If that s done, Messmer truly fullfilled his purpose and can rest easily and can finally spend some quality time with his Girlfriend in the afterlife.. I really hope we ll see a return-duo-fight of Messmer and Rellana in the next DLC: Lamplight of the Helphen together with the long awaited Deathblight Swamp.
"Soon, Tarnished...wilt thou be taken in the jaws...of the abyssal serpent, shorn of light." The change to the soundtrack makes it clear things have just hit a new level of 'oh crap'.
Thank you Miyazaki, as a snake lover thank you for making the best boss in the game revolve his whole being around serpents. It's almost like it was made for me.
Literally relatable. I remember coming away, from first impressions, not being too impressed with the song. But as I fought him more, and as I listened to the track more, and as I learned more of his character, I gained SO MUCH from the track it’s crazy. Like a complete 180 opinion of his track. I think if anything, that just goes to show that music is more than just “sounds good!”. Music is literally emotion. And as I gained more of an emotional response to Messmer’s character, I gained more enjoyment of the music too
I love how the music just sounds tragic. It’s heavy and powerful, but the melody sounds more like a elegy than anything divine or triumphant. The music really gives you a sense that all of Messmer’s suffering has finally reached its peak in this moment - a creature devoid of light given Marika’s blessing to become Lord, whilst her own son remains cast away and forgotten. I really think our presence alone broke him
The tragedy around Messmer and his army, show to us all how much FromSoftware cooked in 2 years. After reading the descriptions about Rellana, the Elite Fire Knights, spells, equip etc, i can say it: *Another victim of Marika's evil planning*
Do not forget that the Hornsent started it all. Their sick delusion of being able to "create artificial saints" lead to all of this, including their own downfall.
@@pontiffsulyvahn3898She is but honestly I have no sympathy at all for her. By the time she became a God she had already committed as many atrocities to the hornets as they did to her, just look at the divine gate in the story trailer. And then after that to genocide several peoples, persecute so many others and try and hide her mistakes and her past are just the tip of the iceberg in how evil queen Marika really became by the time our tarnished arrives.
@@ThatguyOverthereLLCbut after all that, in a time of peace, she had suspicions about her golden order and discovered the truth: that the fingers are misguided and the greater will was never truly around as everyone assumed I think that's the turning point that adds sympathy, it's like the elites in halo realizing they seriously fucked up in trying to genocide humanity, and wanting to make amends Marikas form of making amends was setting plans up for us, the tarnished, to bring about our own age, and knocking over the first domino by shattering the elden ring I can sympathize with someone who realizes they fucked up extremely and tried to make amends for the world afterwards, no matter what came before
She obviously wanted to kill Messmer and Melina, all because they had fire, which is why she also went to war with the Fire Giants. But she couldn't bring herself to do that, so she locked Melina in that tower while Messmer was trapped in the Realm of Shadow.
I like to imagine a secret third phase where if you were to reposte him in his second phase, he’d burst into messmerfire and the music would pick up like this.
"Mother, have you forgotten me? Why did you abandon me? Why didn't you come back for me? Are you angry with me? Didn't I do everything you wanted? Didn't I lead this crusade in your name? Mother! Why did you leave me? Why did you leave?.... I will continue doing your will! and Those stripped of the Grace of Gold shall all meet death. In the embrace of Messmer's flame.... until the day you finally return to me, mother."
Messmer gave up everything to destroy a random tarnished who showed up at his door, because his mission by Marika was to kill those without Grace. He didn't do it because he was oh so loyal to Marika. No. Deep inside, or maybe not even very deep, he already knew he was abandoned, set aside and forgotten by the Lands Between, even if he still told himself and his men Marika would one day return. "Embrace thine oblivion, as shall I". But this crusade... It gave Messmer meaning. It was all he had left from his past, all he had fighted for, for who knows how much. He HAD to believe in it. Stopping, just for once, to question it, would be enough to break him, under the weight of all the time wasted and all the lives lost under its cause. It couldn't be false. He had to keep going. Even if he gave it all he had. It was a curse from Marika, not unlike Nanaya's words to Midra. Messmer gave up all he had, and so much more that wasn't his to give or take, for the whims of an absent mother. And so, facing death by those same absurd whims, all he could do was to curse Marika back.
How fromsoft felt making it look like Messmer was the most evil dude ever in all the trailers only for them to drop the most tragic character in the game on us: 🤣🫵🏾
I mean, he's still DEFINITELY evil by his actions. Regardless of Marika's power over him, he still spearheaded an entire genocide and is partly responsible for just about EVERYTHING that happens in the main game. Very tragic character, but no less evil.
People please I preach to you out of love belive on the lord Jesus Christ and trust in him for you salvation and not in yourself Christ came to die for our sin we have all sinned and deserve hell but God is so merciful and Jesus died on the cross to take our punishment so that who ever belive on him will not perish but have eternal life john 3:16 romans 10:9 if we confess with our mouth Jesus is lord and belive in our heart that god rose him from the dead we will be saved we can not earn salvation it is the free gift from God❤❤❤
Blasphemous creature, devoid of purpose, shorn of reason, bereft of light and it seemeth, stripped of the grace of gold. There are no other lord than Radagon of the golden order, and no other god than Queen Marika and as such, thou shalt meet death, in the embrace of Messmer's flame. Oh lightless creature, embrace oblivion, as thee and thy pitiful god belong to it.
