God this game is so fucking beautiful. When you take a step back and really listen to the content of each one of your (and others) lore videos, it becomes clear how beautifully, intricately, and intentionally miyazaki, martin, and the team have layered meaning beauty throughout every level of this video game. The themes, symbolism, and dialogue on the human condition cut so much deeper than just a video game. Just this one video, talking mainly about two characters, brushes on so many different topics, so many different ideas, themes, and concepts. Philosophy and morality is grappled with. History and it's implications. Religion. All with real world parallels and real application. All interwoven in the deepest and most fantastic fantasy world created since tolkien's middle earth (in my humble opinion. I'm just a fantasy geek on the internet). Thank you for helping me formulate the story in my head and figure out my own ideas on this game. It's brought me so much meaning and joy in the past few years, and your channel (and videos like this one) have been instrumental in allowing me to understand all those layers of meaning and depth. Wouldn't have been possible without you! Keep up the incredible work my man.

Unrelated to the topic of the video but I saw an item description that caught my eye with the DLC in mind. The Crescent Greataxe says something along the lines of its namesake being greatly nostalgic and it made me wonder if it came from the land of shadow. There is that Carian looking person seen in the trailer so maybe they're all about a crescent moon like renalla and her full moon, different stages in the lunar cycle

The dualities are interesting to think about - I can see St. Trina being paired with the *other* White Masks (the mercy killers). I wonder given where this all seems to be heading, if Miquella arranged all of this to keep a promise made to give Godwyn a true death (making him the *promised* Lord). I am seeing these weird exact same-shaped pale root type things in different sizes in the DLC art and thinking how creepy giant living clumps of Godwyn’s death-touched roots would be - likely as creepy as Finger Creepers, only strangling and death blight instead of squeezing and fire. Will we be the ones ultimately freeing Godwyn after some fight with a Messmer/Miquella amalgam? Technically that would make sense - we send all to death already.

I firmly believe that Miquella and Messmer have some kind of intricate connection. Messmer seems like the dark reflection of Miquella, that could even be literally true, but at the very least they're related in some way. Perhaps it's akin to Solid Snake and Liquid Snake in the Metal Gear series, one has the "positive" traits while the other inherited the "negative" traits, relative to the Golden Order in this case.

Taking the Shadow tree into account, I'm starting to think that Miquella was trying to replicate it rather than the Erdtree. The Haligtree is a single tree with two trunks that based on iconography were meant to wrap around each other. The Shadow tree appears to have two trunks that are wrapping around each other. I think it is just one tree based on the fact it is called The Shadow Tree and not The Shadow Tree"S". I'm also starting to think the statues on the road between East Raya Lucaria and the Grand Lift of Dectus might be depicting the cultivation of the Shadow Tree rather than the Erdtree, making them older than the Golden Order. The statue shows a favored straightened sprout but off to one side the sprouts are already as high as the favored bud. Where as the statues depicting the cultivation of the Erdtree, found in Round Table Hold for example, don't have such rival buds. I know there is a normal looking tree in relief on the plinth of the statue but that could have been added in the wake of the Golden Order to recontextualize the statues to be about the Erdtree, aka historical revisionist history/ Historical erasure.

I wonder if Melina and Messmer are counterparts to each other- They are sort of diametrically opposed in terms of alignment (at least from what we can tell about messmer so far, but Melina is very obviously allied with the Erdtree) They are also both linked to fire; the blazing butterfly was thought to be Melina’s, but now people are saying that it’s Messmers. Why not both? What if they are counterparts to each other in the same way Radika are? Or just the ‘exiled first children’ of them? Melina is burned and bodiless- so maybe she stood against Messmer in the past before the land of shadow was set ablaze by his flame? I just think Melina feels a bit unfinished- and having her explained more in the DLC would feel a bit cathartic for her story. Also I find more theoretical connections between them than Miquella imo. Thoughts?

I have been reading about the greek gods who resemble these characters, and planet worship extends this to other religions through the babylonian and roman systems of association. First of all, messmer is obviously hermes. the caduceus is a dead giveaway, as are the merchants from the removed questline who appear to be associated with his frenzied cult. On this note, Hermes is mercury in the system of planet worship, and the norse god filling this role is Odin. Odin is etymologically interpreted to mean lord of frenzy according to google, although I have yet to explore this further. I am not aware of any association of hermes with frenzy, but the planetary link is there, and odin does carry gungnir, notably, and has a famous association with a certain tree. Odin tries to protect the tree from the dragon/wyrm nidhogg, to whom he feeds souls to prevent the serpent from eating the tree. according to lore, the roots and the tree were severed, and apparently odin does this to the tree in marvel comics, although I have not read the story in question. His purpose is said to be to separate the heavens from the earth in doing so. If those living in the grace of gold are in fact doomed to find messmer's flaming embrace, perhaps this is "heaven", and not "earth". (if the world is in fact based partly on "the eternal champion", then it is a "near earth") Hermes is considered a psychopomp (like odin), and he leads the souls of the dead to their final resting place (much like the quote from the trailer about how messmer will embrace the tarnished with flame). His foil in the greek religion is named Hekate, and she is associated with calling the spirit s of the dead back from hades to the material world (who gives us the spirit bell?) She is linked with the ancient anatolian region of caria. Now, it is Ranni who I am identifying with this goddess, but she is a triple goddess, and one of her forms is that of persephone, who is associated with Rot, and has to spend a certain amount of time in hades because of the consumption of a certain fruit, that of the pomegranate. My theory at the moment is that the Haligtree is in fact a pomegranate, and Miquella is in fact representative of Hades. On that subject, the pomegranate seed has a dark fibrous interior surrounded by a bright red pulp which is sweet to taste. This is reminiscent of the hollowness of the dark sign, the abyssal symbol from the ringed city. The world halig of course means holy, and holy, hallowed, hollow are all etymologically linked. Holyness is associated not with light in elden ring, but with the crucible which is also a circular symbol If Ranni is Hekate the crone, and Malania Persephone, the third person of this trio is Demeter, and she is known for causing a great famine due to the abduction of persephone. Supposedly she taught the people of elusis (mycenean greeks, from the bronze age that ended around 1200 BC) the secret rites of elysium at this time, for they recieved her hospitably when she went in search of her daughter. I wonder if this is not Marika, for she is both the mother of persephone, and has some sort of relation to ranni (in terms of ranni trying to replace her. given that the carian culture precedes the arrival of marika, hekate being an old woman relative to demeter is not unfitting). The person of Hekate is associated with crossroads in general, and the lands between could be alternately described as such, just based on the name given. Hekate as an individual within the trinity is associated with the moon and witchcraft. She is also associated with shade, or gloam. This makes me question if marika is in fact part of the triplet of people represented by this goddess, as the gloam eyed queen appears to be a reference to an enemy of marika's, not marika. Furthermore, hermes can be associated with the harvest, and has been termed the "harvest warden" for his role in guarding the crops that are to be harvested. The sickle/saturnine imagery found in the mountaintops of the giants suggests that miquella had some role in the harvest of proverbial grain, and I wonder if the tarnished do not represent grain that is starting to rust, and which is earmarked for the harvest. finally, it appears messmer is doing the harvesting, and miquella is the recipient of the souls. to my knowledge hades is not known for shriving clean the souls of men, but he is associated with wealth (gold) and obsessive love, bordering on terror (ultimately he caused the famine). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_leaf_rust dark

There is a constellation of a snake handler, Ophiuchus which does not appear to be symbolic of anything, but is congruent with this zodiacal sign. That sign looks like a cross spear, even though it represents a bow being drawn. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittarius_(astrology) "the learned healer whose higher intelligence forms a bridge between Earth and Heaven." the severing of this intelligence into frenzy would then result in: ...

I find the idea of Miquella being Messmer far more plausible than you may think. All of the demigods were born in pairs of three, but for some reason Miquella and Malenia are missing a sibling, which if Melina is assumed to be the third one, which she likely is, this leaves the question, where does Messmer belong? Implies he is possibly Miquella
@Malorr

That would give Miquella 2 alter ego’s because he is already Saint Trina. Unless Saint Trina is not truly an alternate person Miquella is (like Marika/Radagon), and just a cover name.

I highly doubt Messmer is a whole new character. Fromsoft's writing ability is second to none and as such, Messmer would have been planned from the start. The idea that messmer wasn't mentioned in the base game because marika "hid his existence" would be lazy writing - a lazy deus ex machina. Messmer's true identity will make sense to everyone, as such he must make sense within the base game. Therefore, i think Messmer is Miquella. I think he is a deformed alter ego, as a conseqence of Mohg's profane influence. Much like how radagon and marika are two people in one body.
@LoreHunter
@LoreHunter 3 месяца назад
It seems like Messmer is already hinted at in the main game though, with stuff like the Duelist helm that talk about snakes as traitors, and potentially some other minor details. I have faith that Fromsoft will have a good explanation. The issue with Messmer as a form of Miquella is that, once again considering the duelist helm, that places Messmer and his snake imagery existing during the time of Godfrey, before Miquella was born.
