Thank you all so much for sending me so much support!
'Usurping' Theory - I think the statue message in Leyndell is a stepping-stone to a secret layer of truth! One we were supposed to find out!
This theory does go against the currently main accepted theory within the Elden Ring, FromSoft lore community - the idea that "Radagon is Marika". R=M, or 'Radika' Theory. This is an important message given to the player, but I think the rabbit hole goes deeper! And just so you know, I think it goes somewhere WAY darker...
I know it sounds crazy to go against the tide, but I hope you'll find I've backed up my theory with a thorough demonstration of the current theory, all of its supporting evidence, and then a detailed breakdown with respect to how the 'Usurping' Theory interacts with, and works with, each of the main arguments for Radagon being Marika (Radika). I've also created Timelines of the Lands Between for both the existing theory, and for the new 'Usurping' Theory. Featuring discussions on Goldmask's questline, Rennala and the Great Rune of the Unborn, the intentions of the Two Fingers, the Symbolism of Queen Marika as a vessel, and Radagon's mysterious origins.
With all that said, I hope you enjoy the video! And I hope, by the end, you'll at least see where I'm coming from!
First time doing this sort of thing, any and all comments will be read, and any discussions or criticisms are very appreciated.
EDIT: Thank you all for sharing so much support and kindness - I'm completely blown away by all the generous comments!

I really appreciate how you interrogate what we assume we know in game! This is definitely S Tier when it comes to original, dare I say, radikal, ideas (I'll show myself out). That said, I see two problems with this theory. First, Marika has been punished and locked away in secret. As the narrator tells us in the opening cinematic, “Queen Marika is nowhere to be found.” If Radagon did usurp Marika, shouldn't there be a false Queen Marika publicly ruling the Lands Between? There has been a precedent of sorts: Morgott the Grace-Given Lord was able to conceal his true identity as an Omen (personally, I think he was using the Mimic Veil before Godrick stole it). So to me, it doesn’t really make sense that Radagon would impersonate someone behind bars, when he himself is also behind bars. Second, the usurpation theory doesn’t explain why the revelation that “Radagon is Marika” is the final piece of the puzzle for Goldmask. In his Mending Rune of Perfect Order, Goldmask condemns the “fickleness” of the gods. Radagon and Marika being the same person provides powerful evidence for the gods being fickle (e.g. Marika wanted to shatter the Elden Ring, while Radagon wanted to repair it) and would confirm his theory. But that epiphany is completely lost if Radagon had usurped Marika; of course two separate people would have separate motives. As a sidenote, for Mystery C, I thought Radagon extracting the Rune of the Unborn was a really interesting parallel to Marika plucking away the Rune of Destined Death from the Elden Ring when she defeated the Gloam-Eyed Queen. (That could even explain why the demigods don't respawn, but that bit is speculation.) In any case, for your very first video, you already have fantastic production values! I’m absolutely eager to see what else you have in store.

I've got a theory that answers your question, but you won't like it. Because Radagon is Marika is far more literal than you're thinking. As in, everything the Golden Order ascribes to Queen Marika the Eternal is actually the work of Radagon. How this works: Radagon is "Marika's" twin. Not her twin brother, but her twin SISTER. "Marika" ascends to godhood, far earlier than we are led to believe in the story of the Golden Order, and Radagon wishes to usurp her. Everything we believe Marika did prior to the Mountaintop of the Giants was carried out by the female Radagon, calling herself Marika. But Radagon cannot wield the divine power, as his sister can. So Radagon sends his shadow, Malekith, to defeat his sister (yep, I'm calling "Marika" as the GEQ), seals the Rune of Death, and imprisons his sister within the Erdtree. This, by the way, is why EVERY SINGLE depiction of Marika in the game, save the one that may be her in Farum Azula, is a depiction of Marika in her imprisonment. Even at the First Church of Marika she is depicted in the pose we later realize is her crucifixion. The people see the iconography, but don't realize the horrific context. But... there is talk of a curse, employed by the Giants on the Mountaintop. A curse that may be the source of Radagon's red hair. A curse that transforms Radagon from a blonde woman into a red haired man. This is a monumental wrench in the gears. You can't pose as a god and rule an age when you've built it around Marika and you are obviously no longer Marika. Godfrey will likely not enjoy discovering that his wife is now his husband, and the truth of Radagon's usurpation of his sister's power would almost certainly end in his destruction or imprisonment. So Godfrey is Tarnished and hounded from the Lands Between. Radagon uses the Second Carian War to establish himself as a champion, then fakes his summoning by Marika to become the Second Elden Lord and essentially reclaim the throne he had already won. There is actually precedent for the gender change in game. Miquella's story seems to be centered on the idea that he can go from a male demi-god permanently trapped in boyhood to a mature female god and ascend to rule a new age of the Haligtree. Which makes a lot of sense if his father already did the opposite. And, if you're inclined to think that Marika (that is, the being we know as Marika, ultimately imprisoned in the Erdtree) played a role in the Night of the Black Knives this would also explain why Godwyn the Golden is the first demigod to die. Godwyn is actually Radagon's son, not Marika's. He's a grafted lineage, feigning royalty. If I was lashing out at the man who usurped and imprisoned me, I'd kill his golden heir first too.

The stagnant vessel aspect for Miquella and malenia hits right. I have never liked Radika theory as its so heavy handed and as you say has some weirdness to it. The usurped theory definitly rings true to me and fits all the things that always seemed to run counter to Radika. The fact we see radagan shift from marika at the fight and then after watching his body get consumed find marika true body makes so much more sense. Great video with strong arguments and I for one would be glad to have the whole Radika theory questioned. I don't think we were meant to automatically assume 'radagan is marika' so weirdly literally as many have. Radagan as usurper fits so well with little bits like marika's mischief. I want to see people push this as far as we can to see what else fits.

Why not both? Let's say 'Marika, The Eternal' with known ties to 'The Eternal City' which is known for its Mimic Tear, crafted a Mimic Tear that took the form of Radagon. Then The Greater Will eventually caught wind of Marika's growing disloyalty and simply lived up to its name and asserted its Greater Will over Radagon, which compelled him to usurp Marika. Radagon would have been crafted from Marika before her disloyalty to The Greater Will developed, which even explains his leal hound moniker. This would allow for both 'Marika is Radagon' and 'Radagon Usurped Marika' to coexist without contradiction, while answering where Radagon came from.
@JarHed69

That's a really good point! I've been seeing more and more chat about Radagon being a Mimic Tear or an Albinauric, and now a lot of comments suggesting it also! Agreed! Radagon must be a mimic tear, with the Eternal City's obsession with creating their own Lord, Radagon could have been their end product, with Marika's blessings. That said, Mimic tears are said to have their own thoughts and convictions, hence Radagon being on the opposing side of Marika's stance on the Golden Order. The Usurp Theory really makes sense!

Mimic tear alwais copy original. If radagon is mimic tear he would look exactly like marika
@tjhalbert3714
@tjhalbert3714 Год назад
@@kosatk120 I like to answer that question with the notion that The Fell God cursed Marika to have red hair and masculine features like the Fire Giants when Marika defeated the fiery deity on the mountaintops. Then Marika's motive to craft the Mimic Tear gets paired with the idea that she wanted to cast off the undesirable cursed red hair and masculine features. I propose that she used Radagon as a vessel for the Fell God's curse. This infused her mimic, Radagon, with the spiteful curse of her fallen enemy in the form of red hair, which the flavor text on the Giant's Red Braid claims he despised, and masculine features, which prevents Radagon from being an empyrean in the matriarchal lands between. This supports Radagon having ill will towards Marika to be taken advantage of by The Greater Will. Plus it would leave a Fell God shaped thorn in The Golden Order, which is what her fallen enemy would have wanted upon its defeat. I'm probably wrong, but I can't find another theory that coherently answers even half of what this one does. I'm excited to see what other questions there are to mull over after the DLC drops. Happy lore hunting!

One crackpot theory I was thinking about recently was the possibility that Renalla was the cuckoo referenced in all the Carian/Academy lore. That the "cuckoo egg" in question could be a primordial glintstone bearing Renalla's soul forcibly used to "steal" Radagon's body and the nest being stolen the seat of godhood for the entire Lands Between. In this framework, Renalla is a mess because she's not really there anymore, and the amber egg would be Radagon's primordial glintstone left behind in the relative safety of Renalla's academy. I think there's also some potential implications from the angle of the Carian puppetry practice and the way it stands as evidence of a Carian MO of "stealing another's body/will." Just an idea, though it is admittedly pretty out there and I do like the tragic story overtones of your version a lot.

That golden egg I feel like is key to understanding a lot of things. My own crackpot theory is that Rennala was reborn using the egg, causing her to go mental and also losing her ability to walk, possibly to keep her quiet from exposing Radagon and his plans. Her eyes glow golden, implying she has grace in her, and the shell that protects glow golden as well, also implying some Golden Order shenanigans at play. Then again, Ranni surely would’ve visited her in that state, as she basically conjured her second phase. Where does that fit in? This game…

Awesome work! New perspectives are vital for lore discussions, especially when the thoughts are presented so coherently and thoroughly. You've been really succesful in putting together a fluent video based on your theory, which I can't imagine was an easy task. Again, great stuff. However, I can't say that I'm personally convinced by the central thesis presented. Here's some of the things that came to my mind: - First of all, as was pointed out by another commenter here, Godwyn's death (in spirit) coming before Radagon's ascension to Elden Lord doesn't work. When the Night of the Black Knives happened, Ranni also killed her physical body. The doll that she took on as her vessel also acts as a disguise - she goes by the name "Renna", so as not to give away her real identity. But when we reach Leyndell, we find that she had a presence there alongside other demigods, including Miquella and Malenia. This would not be possible, since Ranni's body is dead and she does not present herself as the doll in public. - You've discussed this with other commenters, so I won't elaborate on it too much; but everything points towards Godwyn having a close relationship with Miquella and Malenia, as sort of protector and guardian to his younger twin siblings. - You mention the idea of Marika employing the Mimic's Veil and generally being someone who has the ability to impersonate things. If Radagon employing such an ability is central to this theory, then doesn't that point more towards Radagon actually *being* Marika, however one wishes to interpret that statement? - As far as I see, all of the evidence presented here in support of the thesis statement could easily be seen evidence for Radagon somehow being Marika, or a part of her. Where's the smoking gun in favor of usurpation? If we employ Occam's Razor, why is the idea of usurpation more likely than the alternatives which seem to be presented to us at face value? That's the stuff that came to my mind while watching. Again, I want to emphasize how commendable I find it that you've put in the time and effort to bring something new to the discussion - thank you! For the sake of clarity on where I'm personally coming from, I'll just say that I think Radagon is some sort of a fragment that Marika removed from herself, perhaps to expunge the fundamendalist side of herself, so that she could truly delve into studying and understanding the Golden Order critically. That's why I think Ragadon has such a desire for completeness, and why he possessed the Great Rune of the Unborn.
@JarHed69
@JarHed69 Год назад
Man, thank you for such high praise! 😊 And to be honest, in one message, you've put together all the BIGGEST problems for my theory! 😅🤣😭 As you've seen a lot of my responses to other comments, I won't repeat them here. Instead, I will say that you've phrased the problem of my theory in a way I hadn't thought before... I hadn't really realised this until your comment, but a lot (if not most, if not all) of the evidence I've put together for Radagon using mimicry to disguise himself as Marika, could just be evidence for them merging... I'm really grateful you've spelled it out in this way, as it's clearly shown the lack of actual evidence for the theory in ultimately unpalatable... and I desperately need to PROVE something instead of just casting doubt on various opposing areas of the lore... I will say, I DID know this to begin with, but you've actually clarified it in a very succinct way! And in doing so you've made the reasons why it's needed very clear! This is a great help, and along with your kind words, thank you so much for taking the time share this with me!

@@JarHed69 The theory still works well if Radagon brought the amber egg to Rennala so they could create Ranni in a special birthing process that would make her fit to be an Empyrean. In that reading, the demigods would be born from amber eggs rather than normal birth. There's lots of evidence for alternate birthing processes in the work of @tarnishedarchaeologist (ie: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sVtlCuFVfZ4.html). In that reading, Radagon would be following the Greater Will's instructions to create a new Empyrean who could ascend to godhood in the place of Marika (perhaps because she had destroyed the previous Empyrean meant to do so). This plan would have faltered when Ranni killed herself and Godwyn. Perhaps there would have been time to create a new Empyrean in her stead, but then Marika shattered the Elden Ring and Radagon was forced to go try to repair it.

She had gained intelligence and an overwhelming fear of death. She merged with the tarnished for some time but eventually grew strong enough to set out on her own. And though she promised to live as we would, the tarnished hunts her and puts her down. Your theory still fits perfectly with Marika being Radagon's mimic. Unlike the tarnished and Assimi, he was more than happy to let Marika live her own life. As long as she served the greater will and golden order. When her faith wavered he had to intervene. Marika and Radagon are twins born during the previous age. They overthrew the previous order and replaced the coniferous Great Tree with the deciduous Erd Tree. Radagon was Marikas left-hand and was the one who secretly hid the runes Marika removed from the Elden Ring. Radagon believes in the Greater Will and their order above all, so when Marika betrayed the Greater Will by banishing Godfrey the Greater Will used Radagon as a tool to get Marika in line, with her role in allowing Melina (the Gloam Eyed Queen) to burn the Erd Tree being the final straw. After this their shared genetic material is used to merge them together to get her in line for good. Radagon and Marikas “marriage” was a forced union as punishment for Marika and that’s why Miquella and Melania have genetic defects with Marika withholding her affection, leaving Godwin to step in as their caretaker.

Also, the left hand becoming Elden Lord after Godfrey was exiled makes sense too, however I suspect Marika had hoped Radagon would remain in Caria and didn’t anticipate the Greater Will conscripting him to punish Marika and become Elden Lord. Now, considering Radagons smithing skills specifically regarding runes (he created the binding rune and converted his Moonlight Greatsword into a holy rune sword) it’s also likely he was the one who physically modified the Elden Ring when Marika took power, which would be seen as blasphemy considering the reaction to the shattering. This would make Radagons existence extremely problematic for the godly image Marika was cultivating since needing an outside force to modify the Elden Ring would greatly undermine her image. This makes him operating in secret the most logical option if this was what happened. Finally, the twins narratives found throughout the game combined with Miquella and Malenia being deformed (inbred) and embodying similar themes to Marika and Radagon (only jumbled together) them being twins makes perfect sense. Miquella has Radagons mind (knowledge seeking rebel) and Marikas soul (kind and motivated by love of family and community), whereas Malenia has Marikas mind (distraught and confused, relying on those around her to help her find the right path) and Radagons soul (fierce warrior who has faith in her convictions and will go to great lengths to defend her ideals). Them being products of the same genetic material explains this as all the other demigods have far more unique characteristics to define them outside of their parentage.
@TheRisky9
@TheRisky9 Год назад
This goes back to the alchemy inspiration for the game. The White Queen and the Red King come together to create the perfect being. That king and queen are often depicted, not as twins, but as siblings in an incestuous relationship. The perfect being spawned from them would be the Rebis (which I believe is Miquella) after it has been rid of all its rot and imperfections. This implies that Miquella and Malenia were once one person while in gestation. But where Miquella is the perfect divine hermaphrodite, Malenia is the waste or byproduct. Miquella was wanted, hence why there are so many references to Radagon and Miquella spending time together, while Malenia was merely the unwanted waste of the process; hence why she seeks out a father figure in the blind swordsman. I believe the Rot God constantly tempts Malenia which is this "call of the rot." It steals her limbs and promises her wings. If it wasn't for Miquella fashioning her new limbs, she probably would have given in. It takes her pride and promises Valkyries. Her daughter returns the pride at her own sacrifice. It takes her sight, probably going to offer her something in return for that too.

I am glad that you made this. There are some holes in it, but as you said, there are also holes in the “Radagon is Marika” proposal. For instance, why is Radagon sealed and bound inside the Erdtree with Marika? It is also strange that Marika’s body is there after Radagon is turned into a sword. So many questions, the truth is somewhere.
@lupfantomo

I've had a similar idea on Radagon usurping Marika since one of my earlier playthroughs of the game. For me, the big questions centered around some of the core principles of golden order fundamentalism. A big theme of the game is in conjoining and separation of things and the distinctions arising as a result of those two phenomena. The Crucible vs the Erdtree, the Laws of Regression and Causality, etc. Radagon seems to have a fixation especially on conjoining. We experience this through turtle pope and the Church of Vows, his need to mend the Elden Ring, and even his study of both sorcery and incantation as a means of being complete. My view on the matter, and agreement with your thoughts on him usurping Marika, is that he put this into practice to quite literally conjoin himself to Marika. In this way, he has similarities to Godrik, in a drive to graft after a fashion to accumulate power. This could also explain the Elden Beast pulling out the Sacred Relic Sword. It could be an act of him separating Radagon from Marika, effectively undoing the conjoining Radagon had put into place. Looking at their conjoining in this way would also expand on your thoughts concerning Miquella and Malenia. Miquella's solution to their respective curses is unalloyed gold. If Radagon's Golden Order is predicated on him conjoining and thus alloying himself with Marika, it would seem natural that a potential cure would be found in undoing that conjoining, unalloying it. These are just some thoughts and I have more on the issue but I've rambled enough. The Radagon/Marika thing is one of my favorite bits of lore to theorize around and I've never found the alchemical explanations to be fully satisfactory.

Amazing video! I dont even think you need to shift the death of Godwyn really (you missed how he was besties with Miquella). It seems to me the usurpation timeline works well even without ring shattering. We still wouldnt know where the rune came from, but nor the R=M explains it. Still Marikas questioning of the order and being all sus about the ring could have caused the wrath of the Greater Will/Fingers, summoning Radagon to punish or control her. It also works well with Ranni being an empyrean, new chosen vessel for the future, as Marika is just not doing her job well enough. I especially love the very disturbing, yet amazing idea of how the twins were born. And i think it also sorta works with the idea that Melenia is the third child of the pair. She refers to her mother in the tree, being born in there and such.

Amazing insight and such a great work! I don't know if I can fully accept the theory, but earlier disappearance (imprisonment) of Marika makes a lot of sense. This is related to her depictions as a mother, or, rather, to a lack of those. We see her as a god, a martyr, a ruler and commander, but never as a mother, which is strange, given all religious implications. All we know of her attitude to her children is rather instrumental (Melina's retellings). Miquella and Malenia do not care for her one bit, they are never depicted together: a statue in Haligtree shows Godwyn as a parent figure to both of them, but usually twins are just alone, holding to each other. Miquella does hang out with Radagon, though, in his 'fundamentalist' period, looking for a cure for Malenia. Everything implies that Marika *is not there* the whole time. It is supported by the Erdtree's Favor talisman (i.e. there was an age when Marika bestowed blessings herself, but it was a long time ago). Basically (if we leave the shattering out), Marika's direct agency on the world in the narrative disappears approx. at sealing rune of death / expelling Godfrey. She becomes an unseen, invisible object of a cult, similarly to the Erdtree, which spiritual "Golden" appearance is a thing of faith, not of direct presence of blessings and wonders. The governing institution of this cult, is, of course, the Golden Order. The only character that bears its name is Radagon of the Golden Order. Fun fact: most descriptions of the GO are referring to a later period of GO fundamentalism, the time when Marika was already never seen (and Marika is never mentioned in these descriptions, she is actually only vaguely associated with GO). This might have different implications both in support and against your theory, but clearly the shattering was a way for Marika if not to 'get out', then to shuffle her deck, diversify the assets. It was a move not against the Greater Will per se, but against the Golden Order specifically. The very first thing Melina tells Torrent is that seeking Elden Ring will violate the Golden Order (but not the Greater Will, since it has graces equally guiding different agents to do different, sometimes opposing, things). The 'struggle against an usurper of whom no one knows' actually fits to a lot of details, but this theory also works if Marika=Radagon, two minds in one body, or, metaphorically, two conflicting ideas about the order, one usurping the other. The heavy duality imagery and strong self-incestual implications in M&M kids kind of make it hard to see Radagon as a completely random guy from the mountaintops of giants. Goddamn, sorry for the wall of text. Great job anyways!

I'm really happy you liked the video! Sorry it's taken me a minute to respond, was in Italy for a wedding! I think the lack of direct interactions by Marika after she talks with Radagon is key - it's always been so suspicious to me! Her lack of depiction as a mother also works with Melina's character, if she is indeed the secret child of Marika and Radagon! We know her mother gave her the task of taking us to the Erdtree, but her dialogue regarding Boc: "Does being born of a mother... Mean one behaves in such a manner?" makes sense if she was born whilst Marika was shackled in the Erdtree, growing up without being able to have a close relationship with her mother! Side note on this regarding Hewg, we know he was tasked with smithing a weapon to slay a god, so I'm of the mind that Marika gave both Melina and Hewg there secret quests to eventually free her from her enslavement by Radagon. And the Erdtree's Favour Talisman is a GREAT point, I'd forgotten about that one! I need to do A LOT more research on it, but there's so much I'd like to unpack around the Erdtree! I didn't initially focus on it, but people have pointed out that all the ash in Leyndell really might be a suggestion of the Erdtree burning once before! And the spiritual "Golden" appearance might all be an illusion - I always thought the dark strike around and above the entrance to the Erdtree was simply a sort of scar casting a shadow, but someone's suggested that THAT'S actually the remains of the original wood of the Erdtree, as it's not just a shadow like I thought, making the Golden façade an illusion also! Yesterday, someone commented that Marika might have been fiddling with the Elden Ring in an attempt to bring back Godwyn, and it got me thinking about how emotional she must have been after his death. It's obvious when you think about it, but as she's always called the God Queen it's also easy to forget just how painful her grief must have been... and maybe she shattered the Elden Ring when her attempts to restore Godwyn failed. This would make, according to my 'Usurping' Theory, one of her last acts being one as a mother grieving the loss of her son, which is a compelling idea to me at least! Thanks for the in-depth reply, you've given me more to think about! Comments like this are really helping me get my thoughts in order, and getting me to put them into words! So thanks! If you have any other thoughts, please let me know!

Personally I like the theory that Marika created Radagon using a combination of her god powers, the Elden Ring, and silver tear mimicry. She basically made him a clone of herself dedicated to defending and reinforcing the Golden Order. (I think I heard this from Lore Hunter?) He served his purpose well but when Marika started acting out he became a tool that the Elden Beast/Greater Will could use to subdue her, and eventually they fused the two of them together to completely remove Marika’s agency. This explains Radagon’s complete lack of personality, and the way that he seems to mirror Marika, like he is the expression of all of her submissive traits that she suppresses.

This theory deserves far more views, it's such an interesting idea. I'll add one note to Marika transforming into Radagon at the end of the game, when you enter Leyndell and fight Margit for the second time he seems to possess a commoner that was standing in the field, with the man physically becoming Margit, maybe this could be what was happening to Marika in the erdtree, after all Radagon's body does revert back to Marika after you kill the elden beast. This would also mean that Radgon could still be alive somewhere, as when you killed him you would have only knocked him out of Marika's body, just like how Morgot is still guarding the erdtree after you defeat Margit

Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the theory! And that's a VERY interesting point! I completely forgot about Morgott transforming from a commoner! I'd also add, there's all the OTHER enemy's that transform when you attack them - they all drop Larval Tears, and there's a lot of speculation lately that Radagon could be a Mimic Tear himself - it's something I'll definitely cover if I make a follow-up video... I wish I had found your video before making mine on Radagon, you structured your arguments so well, its easy to follow you on most parts and its cool to see that there are more people who like to think outside of the box and are willing to make long videos on it, its hard to find original lore videos who arent afraid to speculate and not take everything, even if believed by many, as truth. I hope there will be more in the future! I would like to add that Radagon "aspired to be complete", thats why I believe it was his own aspirations to reach godhood that made him usurp Marika, also all those changed rules in the Golden Order applied by Radagon could also be just him, acting in his own service and not for the benefit of the Greater Will. And becoming the sword for the Elden Beast could be the same thing that Rykard tried to do with the serpent, even though the motivations differ, the action is kinda similar. Rykards idea to wage war against the gods could be something that he had seen his father do with marika, since repairing the elden ring is basically fighting her will and therefore fighting a god. Maybe this could be another hint towards your theory.

the last shot of your timeline (at 24:02) has a pretty big issue and imo mistake in it: You are placing the marriage between Radagon and Marika way too late. The order of events is as follows: Radagon goes to Liurnia and eventually marries Rennala > 3 children are born, one of them being Ranni > Radagon returns to Leyndell and marries Marika > this gives his children demigod status (as stated in game) > Miquella and Malenia are born: this is important as it is shown and implied by text that Miquella knew Godwyn. > Ranni kills Godwyn. here is why I think this is the right order: Ranni was shown to be a member of the "council" in Leyndell. we see this during the Morgott fight when he complains about all of them being "traitors". it would make no sense that Ranni becomes member of the council after she kills Godwyn and loses her body, thus she was in Leyndell for a while, meaning she had demigod status. this leaves enough time for Miquella and Malenia to be born and for things to unfold. eventually Ranni decides to kill Godwyn which triggers the shattering. also it would make no sense for the ring to be shattered before MIqulla's and Malenia's birth, because they inherited 2 great runes after all. would be impossible to do so if you are born after the Shattering.
@JarHed69

In my opinion, Ranni's having her chair at the council in Leyndell... is a very good point... I'm ashamed to say, I hadn't even considered this... Bloody hell... Well, first thing that comes to mind - if Radagon went to Leyndell to usurp Marika, then I think it's natural he would elevate his own children to the council with him, but maybe she never ACCTUALLY sat in the chair..? As you can tell, I'm reaching for an answer, because I don't really have anything right now to counter this REALLY good point, that I definitely missed... I will have to address this if I want to take the theory any further! I'll think over it, so thank you so much for pointing this out!

There is a small window where marriage, birth, death, council, then War could happen in that exact order. We inherit all there great runes from them from our play through so that last part doesn’t work. It’s basically fact that when the Elden ring got shattered they didn’t inherit the runes persay they just went and collected a piece of it and they could bc they were demigods who was gonna stop them at the time except themselves, which eventually happened when they all fought with their great runes….mohgs great rune literally states that it became stained with blood AFTER he acquired it bc he was tainted by the formless mother. Melanias became the rot butterfly’s, godricks became even more golden, radahn surviving a Scarlett bloom enhances his athleticism, survivability if that’s how you wanna call it (health equip load and stamina) , and Morgotts gives you I think just more health or something bc he stays loyal to the golden order and protect ting the erd tree. The great runes made them stronger once they got them but their own personalities eventually overtook the runes themselves. It would be super lame and odd story wise if marika was to break the Elden ring but then the shards just randomly go to her children…it makes more sense they all took a piece and not just inherited them.

@dOZ I think the part of the lore you are missing is that the runes are part of the elden ring, but not the elden ring itself. The biggest example is the rune of death that marika removed to change how death works in the land between. So runes are some short of specific law that you can add and subtract and the elden ring is the set of laws currently in effect.

I will say this video is really well put together and I will be looking forward to whatever you put out next. However, I must say I don't like this theory at all, if only because it undermines what I think is a masterful reveal that answers so many questions. I also feel there's too much it doesn't address, plus much if not all of the evidence supporting it doesn't seem to stand on its own, only working if you reinterpret things with the intent to prove this particular theory. It opens up more (previously easy to answer) questions than it answers, for example, why is radagon being crucified ? Why does he maintain his supposed disguise inside the erdtree ? Why would Marika address radagon as her other self ? To me this really doesn't sound like how someone would address their usurper/enemy How come is it that rennala's children are demigods if they weren't born from Marika ? (though to be fair the mainstream understanding of the lore itself doesn't seem to know whether being a demigod is a title or something to be inherited) Why is it said that malenia and miquella are born from a single god ? Is that god radagon ? If so then why does miquella have golden hair like Marika ? (Though to be fair again, the mainstream understanding of the lore doesn't explain why ranni is an empyrean either) Also I think that if fromsoft ever intended to imply what this theory suggests then they'd probably say "Marika is radagon" instead, what is in the game however implies that the sculptor saw Marika in radagon and not the opposite. To me, the intro part where both radagon and marika are in the same position seemingly doing two different things (radagon trying to repair the ring while Marika shatters it) but ultimately ending up shattering it completely debunks the notion that Marika and radagon exist in two different bodies because we do know that this entity would have to be Marika not just radagon because the motivation to do this only lines up with Marika and not radagon. I think the idea presented in the comments that Marika didn't necessarily consent to being fused with radagon is much more compelling.
@JarHed69
@JarHed69 Год назад
Thanks for your kind words! They really mean a lot! And you're thoughts are absolutely fair! The 'Usurping' Theory is pretty much completely based off of the original 'Radika' Theory, so without it, it's justified to say the 'Usurping' Theory is a stretch of a conclusion to reach on its own. That said, I feel that is the exact intent from FromSoft! The 'Radika' Theory is handed to us, so I think it's natural for it to answer many of the big mysteries and fit the questions within the game. It just doesn't explain the way Corhyn and Goldmask's questline continues after you tell them the message, and I think you have to bend a lot of the lore for THIS to be the final conclusion. A comparison I wish I made in the video is with the illusion of Princess Gwynevere in Dark Souls 1 - as this shown that it's an idea FromSoft have done before! Your questions are all spot on! They're all things I wish I covered in more detail, and things I still need t do a lot of research on. That said, allow me to ty and tackle them, to see where my head is at now regarding them: Why would Radagon be pretending to be crucified in the Erdtree? - Excellent point, and an obvious one I haven't really thought about... First thing that comes to mind, I guess maybe Radagon can only take the forms of things as they currently are? We use the Mimic's Veil to take the form of objects based on what area we are in/what's around us - so I thought of it, like, as Marika slowly deteriorated inside the Erdtree, and if Radagon is taking her form, then that form would also slowly be deteriorating... it's a really tricky point for this theory to answer though! Why would Marika address Radagon as her other self? - To me, this does feel like something she WOULD say to someone intending on copying and using the image of her as their own. I think "mine other self" does work with the 'Usurping' Theory, as maybe Marika realised that pretending to be her was Radagon's plan? How could Rennala's children be Demigods? - You're right that it's not exactly said if Demigod is something you're bon with or simply a title... on a similar note, Enia does call the demigods, "each and all the direct offspring of Queen Marika." If you google Direct Offspring, it can be defined as "A person who was born into OR legally adopted into the direct line of an individual's descent" - so that does mean that Rennala's children are still Marika's direct offspring even if they are only her stepchildren. As such, I would agree that demigod is a title as opposed to something you're born as Why are Malenia and Miquella born from a single god? - I am disappointed with my section on this in my video, as I didn't really address the specific choice of wording used in Malenia's Remembrance. Since I uploaded it though, I have seen someone claim the Japanese text for her Remembrance uses the phrase "唯一人の神" which can be translated as “the one and only god”, INSTEAD of "a single god", so depending on how much you agree on the Japanese being the TRUE text for the lore, there's definitely need for more investigation! And this is something I've not seen anyone talk about!!! And on "Marika is Radagon" being more suitable for FromSoft to use, if this theory is true - I think it's important to remember this message comes from the sculptor! Using the 'Usurping' Theory, the sculptor would be under the impression that Radagon and Marika are married and two separate people. So if he discovered that Radagon has been pretending to be Marika, then the order of words "Radagon IS Marika" makes sense. Whilst everyone has been thinking that Marika is making choices and doing things herself, what we thought was Marika was ACTUALLY Radagon. They may have seen Marika, or been told of her decrees/policies, but they were all Radagon. So Radagon is actually Marika in this case - and if you imagine the transformation of the statue in reverse, I think you can see better what the sculptor is trying to convey. Sorry for the long response, but all your questions were SO on point, I felt I needed to give answering them a go! Can't lie, these questions are also things that have been in the back of my mind, but hadn't yet been able to put into words, so this comment is of such great help, so thank you so much! I'm thinking of continuing this theory in a follow up, and once I've got a script/paper together for it, could I ask you to possible give it a read?

@@JarHed69 these are good points, I think it could be reasonably argued in either direction when it comes to what marika told radagon or the sculptor's intent. though there's one thing i said that you don't seem to have addressed, I'll quote myself here : "To me, the intro part where both radagon and marika are in the same position seemingly doing two different things (radagon trying to repair the ring while Marika shatters it) but ultimately ending up shattering it completely debunks the notion that Marika and radagon exist in two different bodies because we do know that this entity would have to be Marika not just radagon because the motivation to do this only lines up with Marika and not radagon." ,I think this was the single strongest point i made and i'd like to hear your thoughts on it. also, now that you mentioned what enia said, I now think the word "demigod" seems to be both Hereditary AND a given title,let me explain: Godrick's greatrune says that the first demigods were Godfrey and his offspring (the golden lineage), including godfrey here is curious as we don't have anything that suggests that he's at all related to marika or any other god. Enia seems to say that godrick was the weakest of the demigods due to him being a distant relation to marika and so his "divine blood is sorely diluted", yet she also says that all demigods are direct offspring of queen marika, seemingly excluding godrick form this statement but no one else, I think this heavily implies three things: 1-that marika's blood does have inherent power. 2-that when she says "direct offspring of queen marika" she really does mean a biological relation as she doesn't for example suggest that any of the other demigods are weaker than the others due to their heritage, this in my mind reinforces the idea that the game gives us that radagon and marika are the same person since at least three of demigods, including the mightiest of them all are rennala's children, I don't think her meaning that marika didn't take godrick as step son would make any sense in this context. 3-that demigod is also given title as it is indeed given to godrick despite not being a direct offspring of queen marika, and godfrey despite not being at all related to her as far as we know finally, I'll say that it'd be my pleasure to give your next a script a read, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for what you put out next, be it a follow up to this or something else, so keep at it ! I'll also add that getting a 167 subscribers from a channel's first video which only has 2.8k views is some of the best reception I've ever seen a starting channel get, this looks extremely promising for you (if you'd like to continue making stuff) I'd say haha.

As far as Radagon being a descendant of the Fire Giants, it would track with Norse mythology, which we know was a major influence on Elden Ring. In Norse myth, the gods were both descended from and frequently intermarried with giants. It also provides an Occam's Razor type of explanation to the "curse" of the Fire Giants of Radagon and his children, notably Radahn; they weren't literally afflicted with some convoluted curse, it's their lineage, which they, as adherents to the Golden Order, would see as a stain. I also love how this theory reframes Malenia and Miquella's cursed disposition. Being born from death is literally one of the first things mentioned in A Game of Thrones, when the Starks find the direwolf pups in the snow trying to nurse from their dead mother. There's also the theory that Daenerys died in childbirth in AGoT to explain why her son was supposedly born full of graveworms. There's also the fact that Miquella is associated with the lily, which in our world is the most common type of flower for funerals. And even though Miquella's Lily is described as a water lily, which is not part of the _lilium_ genus, it looks like a lilium instead of a water lily. Actually, it seems to most closely resemble an Easter lily, which, as the name would imply, is associated with Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ; that could just be an allusion to Miquella's eternal youth, and even his attempted rebirth within the Haligtree, but it could also strengthen the association of life, death, and rebirth if the Usurpation theory, and what it means for the circumstances behine Miquella and Malenia's conception, turns out to be true. Finally, I like that the Usurper theory fits better with GRRM's love of schemes and political intrigue, which goes back to him as a young boy in New Jersey with some pet turtles. I also agree that the Usurper theory totally casts Rennala in a newer, more sympathetic light.

So I think I can put together a few of those questions. "Radagon is Marika." Is not the same sentence as "Radagon WAS Marika." The plant-theming of the game suggests that people too are plantlike. My opinion is that Radagon and Marika were grafted. (Though a better grafting than Godrick's clearly.) Bodies can be greatly manipulated by the Erdtree/Beast, as we see when Radika is turned into the Relic Sword. (Relic is a word for a remaining piece of a corpse, not just an ancient artifact.) Corhynn thus gets distraught because of learning things like how Marika removed Destined Death from the Elden Ring, or how Marika shattered it in response losing Godwyn. Radagon was a fundamentalist now resisting Marika within 1 body, and learning that Marika has been resisting rather than serving the Elden Ring all along would be shocking to a Golden Order Fundamentalist who worships Marika first - Elden Ring second. Lastly, anyone with a grand realization or conviction can create a Great Rune. We receive many of them throughout the game for different endings. Radagon was a descendant of giants that lost the war and had a lot of self-loathing (including his red hair). The rune of rebirth is Radagon's rune (not Rennala's). It is his conviction to be reborn. He believes he can do so through Marika, hence remaking the sword and getting a divorce. Add on leaving the rune he made to be reborn with Rennala in favornof Marika.

Tbh the idea that Radagon and Marika were always the same person seems wild and I personally don't believe it. The nice part about these games is they tend to be vague enough that you can fill in the blanks however you want and you're just as right as everyone else. The bed chamber message is the biggest thing that tells me they weren't always the same person in addition to them being antagonistic to each others goals as Marika is hung up and Radagon tries to fight you. There's plenty of speculation to be had as to why but personally giving Radagons history it seems he is trying to restore the elden ring while Marika tries to shatter it. This difference makes me think they are two people sharing a vessel.

I'm not trying to do a rebuttal here but few things I'd like to point out that I think are worth discussion: First off, when it comes to Radagon's motivation when it comes to anything, I think it's mainly to seek perfection. He studied sorceries while married to Rennala then later studied incantations when married to Marika and this is specifically said to be due to him striving to be complete. It serves as a more satisfactory answer for why he left Rennala imo, there being a deep void within him that he seeks to fill by becoming a perfect being. Who knows if that's due to him born a shard of Marika or if it's due to him being a descendant of Giants, but either way it feels more direct and personal for a mythic hero sorta figure like him. On a different matter, I'd like to point out the term Marika uses to describe Radagon as her "Other Self", in Japanese it's specifically the same term that Latenna uses to describe her wolf Lobo. The Albinauric' relationships with their wolves is its own can of worms but for now it's worth pointing out cuz the dialogue is not hardcut I suppose. As for other dialogue-related shenanigans, I don't think Rogiere's dialogue should be given the same weight as objective facts within the story,. Dialogue being a subjective narrator means it's appropriate to cast doubt when there is contradictory evidence. It's hard to ignore the Empyrean status being specifically linked to Demigod status, and evidence points to Ranni being a child when Radagon left and she became an Empyrean, being given Blaidd with whom Iji recounts she played with while Rennala watched them both and acknowledged Blaidd as a step child. Furthermore there is nothing from any of the three to recount Radagon ever having any presence in Ranni's life which further supports him being absent from her childhood onwards. The timeline works best when Godwyn's death is placed much further down the line after Radaon left Rennala.
@JarHed69
@JarHed69 Год назад
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! There's a lot of areas I wished I covered in more detail, but I was worried about making this looong video any longer! 😅 Radagon's motivations are of course a very interesting part of his story - and I agree that he clearly has a MASSIVE drive to feel complete. This big void, as you say, would be a great motivator, and I think there are quite a few idea that could explain why he feels this way. If he WAS a small Fire Giant, that might explain his drive for perfection - a rejection of his heritage and a unending desire to be accepted within the Golden Order. On the flip side, I have to acknowledge that if he WAS split from Marika, then being essentially half a person would also explain his unending pursuit of becoming whole... Either works in my mind, but I find the idea of it being because he split from Marika... unsatisfying. On the Japanese texts - I need to do a lot more research if I want to continue this theory! As I said, the English translations are clearly missing some of the context implied in the Japanese, as occasions like Rogier contradicting himself pop up also... so this is something I'm looking into. And on Rogier's dialogue - I think his claim to have spent a great amount of time studying the Night of Black Knives, along with his knowledge of the Rune of Death, the Black Knifeprint, and the Cursemarks, makes me trust his dialogue. He's one NPC who gives us a hell of a lot of lore information, so I think he's intended to be a trusted source! On Ranni and Empyreans - I think the idea of Ranni not being a demigod when she's named as an Empyrean is fair to claim. It's just so confusing and un-detailed what makes an Empyrean! And I think Radagon was indeed still with Rennala when Ranni was made an Empyrean, which really could be why Marika begins to have doubts about the Golden Order. As I've said, there's a lot of investigation to do for this, which I've started to do for a video continuing this theory. I hope that all makes sense? Comments like this really help me put my ideas into writing, and are really helping me work out what my next video will need to cover! So honestly, thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
@Er404ChannelNotFound
@Er404ChannelNotFound Год назад
@@JarHed69 Glad I can be of help! I agree that Rogier's words carry more weight than the average NPC but I feel Ranni's whole thing with the black knives is she hid the secret so well. The whole way with which the Carian study hall operates and how it prevents entry to the Divine Tower goes to show the lengths to which she went to hide it. Beyond that I also find it hard to swallow the idea of Godwyn dying while Godfrey was still around. Godfrey's conquests took targeted the enemies o the Golden Order until his "last worthy foe" perished, becoming Tarnished by that point. The black knives as well as Those who live in death are presently an enemy of the Golden Order given great import and it doesn't quite fit well for the death of Demigods to have began taking place and yet Godfrey was not made to fight back against them. The puzzle pieces fit way better together if he was already gone by the time Godwyn was made a martyr.

Nice work on the video! I'm a big fan of the idea that Marika and Radagon were at some point separate people, though I do think that at least by the time of the Tarnished's return, Radagon has done more than just make himself look like Marika. He's used some technique, like an advanced version of grafting perhaps, to merge the two of them into one body. Maybe he even used parts of himself to hold together what was left of Marika after shattering the Ring inside her, and that's what they meant by his attempts to repair it I could go on about my personal theories on his origins and rune all day, but I don't really have any evidence for that, so I'll show some self-control

I’ve always thought Radagon’s birth was the Fire Giant’s curse on Marika. That war ended with an exchange of curses - the last Fire Giant was cursed to watch the Forge for eternity. Marika was cursed to be split into two selves. There was no mention of Radagon before the war of the Giants and he despises his Red hair because it reminds him of the giants. Radagon wants to serve the Golden Order and for both Marika and Radagon to be together again as one god but Marika doesn’t want that. Her plan was to shatter the Elden Ring and Radagon works against that. Radagon studies sorceries and incantations to ‘complete himself’ because he is incomplete. Marika is also incomplete, however. It’s why she creates the Tarnished to begin with. So that one day a warrior comes back strong enough to usurp the Golden Order (and kill the Elden Beast). Godfrey was the First Tarnished who Marika banished since he was obviously very strong, along with his troops. IIRC our player character is a descendant of this original army. Radagon doesn’t want this so again, he works against her by sealing the Erdtree roots.

Two theories that I've been considering: 1. Radagon is puppeted by Marika, in the same way Ranni is a puppet. That might explain him having a greater rune. While not being the same body, Radagon could indeed be Marika. The, "Yet to become me," is more ominous in this context, with Marika 'assuming control' over Radagon as he becomes a figurative vessel for the Order, as she becomes just a literal vessel for the ring. Though I still need to figure out why he'd be trying to put the ring back together once in her control. Perhaps she needed to escape her own death into a puppet like Ranni became, then the ring being fixed after might not matter to her, upon assuming the form of her champion, Radagon. 2. Pulling from The Tarnished Archeologist's discussions of the tree's role in the lore, I suspect the rune of death was broken because the non-omen lineage was no longer being born, so this was a last ditch effort to prevent their extinction. (This, though, I suspect, clashes with the first theory, in that Marika presumably wouldn't want the ring repaired if it may mean death resumes, yet I'm not even sure that's part of what would happen. I'll need to look more into the shattering of the elden ring and exactly what it means. Assuming currently that the shattering of the elden ring was meant to break the rune of death, and stop the extinction of Marika's lineage, or adopted lineage in the lands between, essentially. If there's anything to these theories, then giving Renala the amber egg, her continuous rebirth 'school', fits with this narrative of the perpetual halting of extinction. Marika, in this perspective is defying the greater will, to retain her God-hood; the elden ring contained in her body, and the elden beast contained in Radagon, under Marika's control, through her control of Radagon. Marika and Renala effectively doing the same thing, here.. delaying the inevitable indefinitely, to preserve those for whom they are tasked to care. I could be off base, and in truth haven't even played the game yet, but I've been digesting a considerable amount of lore videos. These just seemed to be things I've considered that neither appear to be ruled out or ruled on, from what I've seen.

I recall hearing a theory that Radagon's origin is that of the champion described in the 'Brick Hammer' description: "Weapon made from an ordinary stone brick. Wielded by a laborer who lead a rebellion, and later become a champion himself. Even among other bludgeons of its size, this weapon is especially weighty. The strength of a giant is required to wield it." Given that his primary weapon is a hammer, Dog Pope repeatedly refers to him as a "champion," and his connection to the giants via his red hair, I think it's plausible.

With that in mind, start to notice how the myth of Calliope is an allegory for mixing and burning the Tria Prima (Mercury, Sulfur, Salt). I think clearly the developers intended Rennala to be Mercury, Radagon to be Sulfur, and Marika to be Salt. So, if this mimics the story of Calliope and Pegasus touching the sun, it would seem Radagon might have come from the sun, in some metaphorical or literal sense? That would explain why it seems nobody in-game knows where he came from. (Also, Calliope is a Muse, who splits into 3 Muses, who each split into 2 more Muses. This seems to be the family tree of Rennala/Radagon/Marika and their empyrean (specifically) children - more background on Ranni/GEQ required to understand that part though, and I’m on my lunch break and can’t keep typing lol) (Muses = Empyreans, cutting and tying strings of fate)

But getting so much positive feedback has really made me think about continuing to explore this theory, especially all the points and evidence that I missed... Comments like yours are a great support, so thank you for your kind words! If I've got people thinking and having fun with the lore, then that's all I hoped for!

I don't think Marika was really involved in the Night of the Black Knives, and that was all Ranni. The assassin's that helped Ranni were likely old associates of Marika's, because she came from their same race and was an "Eternal" or "Numen". The assassin's probably agreed to help Ranni because they sought revenge against Marika betraying their old traditions and using the Golden Order to stomp down all other traditions, including those of the Eternals. Ranni sought revenge Radagon and the Golden Order because of how they left her mother, Rennala, humiliated and emotionally broken when Radagon left to marry Marika.
@Xerxes8282
@Xerxes8282 Год назад
The flaw in your take is that Maliketh feels betrayed by Marika. The simplest explanation for which is because she was the one who told Ranni where to find Destined Death and set up Ranni's theft of it. After sealing Destined Death so long ago, she has now unleashed it upon the Lands Between once more.

I was skeptical at the beginning but after watching the whole video I gotta say there's a solid foundation for a theory here that puts into new perspectives aspects of the lore. Great video! But what about the statue of Goldwyn holding malenia and Miquella? Wouldn’t that mean that the twins would have had to been born pre-Shattering?
@Luaeria
@Luaeria Год назад
This theory is MORE than coherent and definitely addresses some of the thoughts I’ve been having as well about the treachery of Radagon. It also addresses why Malenia and Miquella have no obvious relationship with Marika, but they do with Godwyn and Radagon. The one hole in your timeline is that if Miquella and Malenia come so far after Godwyn has been killed, then how did Miquella and Malenia come to know Godwyn to the extent that Miquella would make a ceremonial, and perhaps, ritual sword whose description is a prayer of Miquella’s yearning for Godwyn to have a true death. I think that whole bit is also linked the Castle Sol and Miquella’s obvious influential presence there as well. With a clear ritual of some kind meant to bring about an eclipse and perhaps opening the gates of Helphen to allow Godwyn’s soul to return to the lands between. But it failed, because the stars/celestial bodies were being held in stasis by none other than Radahn. Radahn who Malenia fought long ago in order to free the celestial bodies and aide Miquella in facilitating a ritual capable of returning Godwyn to the world. All of this suggests that Miquella and Malenia knew Godwyn. Lastly. If the two fingers chose Radagon as a replacement for Marika, it would make Radagon an empyrean. The only male empyrean that isn’t arguably basically a woman or a rebis or presenting as both sexes/genders & neither here nor there. This is also something that makes this theory hard to grasp, but certainly not implausible. These are definitely areas I would be interested in hearing your exploration of as you seek to further establish the viability and relevance of such a brilliant theory. Absolutely brilliant piece of lore diving and a truly refreshing take. I’m subbed! Can’t wait for more!
@JohnBaileyOwen
@JohnBaileyOwen Год назад
Miquella wouldn't actually need to have known Godwyn for this to make sense or for him to yearn for a true death for his brother. He'd just need to believe that Godywn *was* his brother, and to know about the effects Godwyn's corpse was having on the Lands Between. I think your use of the word "ceremonial" is key. The Golden Epitaph is "made to commemorate" Godwyn's death, which suggests to me that it is something formal and ritualistic - the kind of entreaty made in a religious ceremony rather than something that expresses a personal plea. The use of "lord brother" also suggests that Miquella views Godwyn at something of a remove. Or one can think about it this way: what's the evidence in the description that suggests anything personal? I think that is a harder argument to make.
@Luaeria
@Luaeria Год назад
@@JohnBaileyOwen but what of the statue of what appears to be Godwyn holding Miquella a d Malenia when Malenia was still a youth in the haligtree at the Loretta fight? Why specifically Godwyn? Unless you believe, perhaps, that that is Marika. If you do, then why is there no other evidence whatsoever of Marika having any sort of relationship with Miquella or Malenia?
@JarHed69

I'm very relieved that the theory seems to have come across properly... I was VERY worried people would think I'm crazy 🤣 But thanks for your support, you are more than too kind and it really means a lot to me! And thanks for sharing your thoughts! I've been trying to work out an answer for the close relationship between Godwyn and the Twins, but I'm yet to come to a proper argument that I feel is satisfying enough. That said, as you said, I have to agree that the implied close relationship between Miquela, Malenia, and Godwyn is JUST implied, and not as strongly as people have argued! I'm glad you share this sentiment, but the use of the word "commemorate" as you've pointed out is actually something I glossed over! It IS something more ceremonial and ritualistic - I felt like I was on the right path, but I totally missed this detail ,and it really does help! so thank you! And I think you're right, phrasing it "what evidence specifically suggests it IS personal" is a better way to put the argument! Their relationship IS the main bit of the lore that's been put against the 'Usurping' Theory, so I've been doing some more research into Miquella and the Eclipse Ritual. After making a whole 30min video about going against the accepted theory, I hope I don't come across as trying to be a contrarian... but I really don't think there actually IS any sort of ritual with the Eclipse 🤣🤣🤣 I'll try to explain, but this is the first part of the script I've recently written for a potential follow-up video for the theory: ----- Mention of the Eclipse is reserved for a handful of weapons and a handful of talking spirits. As described in the Eclipse Crest Heater Shield - “The sun in eclipse is said to be the symbol of the Wandering Mausoleum where the soulless demigods slumber.” So if the Mausoleums house slumbering SOULLESS demigods, does that mean Godwyn isn’t the only soulless demigod? It is said the corpses of these demigods are housed inside these Mausoleums, and they’re often guard by the Mausoleum Knights, who have decapitated themselves to “ followed their masters into Death” (Mausoleum Soldier Ashes) The Eclipse Crest Greatshield tells us that “The eclipsed sun, drained of color, is the protective star of soulless demigods. It aids the mausoleum knights by keeping Destined Death at bay.” SO these knights are protecting their soulless masters inside the Mausoleums, and the symbol of the Eclipse aids keeping Destined Death at bay. So, to me, “keeping Destined Death at bay could mean one of two things: either it means it’s stopping the soulless demigods from truly dying, with the hope that they could one day be restored, OR that it is preventing these soulless gods from producing and spreading Deathroot, like Godwyn’s soulless corpse. Or maybe it’s both of these? If they are Souless demigods, then surely they also have the potential to spread Deathroot. And maybe, after interring Godwyn in the roots of the Erdtree failed to put his body to rest, maybe they learned to isolate them instead, creating the Mausoleums and their knights to prevent anyone tampering with their soulless bodies? I think it’s crucial that this endeavor would be AIDED by the symbol of the Eclipse, which leads me to the spoopy talking spirits. Within Castle Sol, a Spirit directly speaks out to Miquella: “Lord Miquella, forgive me. The sun has not been swallowed. Our prayers were lacking. Your comrade remains soulless... I will never set my eyes upon it now... Your divine Haligtree…” We know Miquella is related to the use of the Eclipse, but if the Eclipse IS representing the concept of sealing Deastend Death, then the phrase “the sun has not been swallowed” could surely simply mean that Destined Death has not been sealed? That the spread of Godwyn’s Deathroot has not been prevented? ----- Very ropey as is, but this is where I got to today 😅 But thought I'd share, as you're comment's been so kind and generous with information!

@@JarHed69 I love having a new a clearly very bright perspective and interpretation of the lore. I don’t think any of us are right or wrong in totality and I think it’s this way on purpose. So instead I just love having discussions about it and hearing new ideas. I’m thrilled that your perspective is so unique and quite clever! I love to consider what ideas you’ve offered
@Luaeria

@@JarHed69 Additionally, one of the earliest bits of lore released for Elden ring included some insight into the night of the black knives. The lore released at that time stated that on the night of the black knives, MANY demigods were felled, but that Godwyn was simply the first of them. It is stated that the black knife assassins struck swiftly and in coordination so that Marika could not adequately respond in order to save her demigod children. I also think that staving off death root is not necessarily the only thing the eclipse ritual was for. I think the eclipse ritual was specifically meant to invoke the eclipse. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon turns red because the only sunlight reaching the Moon passes through Earth's atmosphere. The more dust or clouds in Earth's atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear. The significance of this is that I believe destined death and helphen are both associated with red. The lunar eclipse is meant to break down the barrier between Helphen and the lands between. This would allow for soulless demigod’s souls that have been cast into the depths of helphen to return to the lands between, at which time they can either have destined death appropriately delivered to them, or live again, a second life. This is why I do not believe the mausoleums being associated with the soulless demigods and the eclipse ritual are unrelated. I believe they are fully related. Additionally the architecture of the mausoleums is 100% congruent to Nox architecture and if we associate Nox architecture with leyndell before the Nox we’re cast below the earth for attempting to create their own lord, we can then agree that these mausoleums were built BEFORE the golden order was well established. Another bit of detail that supports this is that the faces on the mausoleums we have to crush in order to get the mausoleums to squat are the same gaping sunken eyes faces of the petrified/statues we find all over Nokstella and Nokron eternal cities. I call them statues because in several places through out the eternal cities you can clearly see the rectangular shape of a base to the structures, suggesting they aren’t petrified beings that previously lived. But are instead crafted statues, placed where they are for some other reason. If they ARE petrified previously living beings, their anatomy is very unique amongst those who dwell in the lands between and they were clearly made into statues post petrification by those that dwell in the eternal cities. But why?

Love is the death of duty is always spoken, but the inverse (Duty is the death of love) hits much heavier in Elden Ring with Radagon and Rennala. Yes. It’s all alchemy. “Marika is reminiscent of the alchemical concept of the White Queen. The White Queen is often depicted as one half of the Rebis (the other half being the Red King, referenced with Radagon), a single being possessing both male and female qualities, also sometimes referred to as the divine hermaphrodite. It is said that the Rebis hailed from one being that is separated into a male and female half until it is unified once again to form a transcendental being empowered by a dragon (corresponding to the Elden Beast)”. -Elden Ring Wiki “O Radagon, leal hound of the Golden Order. Thou'rt yet to become me. Thou'rt yet to become a god. Let us be shattered, both. Mine other self.” This is where it all went wrong. Marika is done with the Golden Order. The death of her son Godwyn was the catalyst for the Shattering. That’s why she is shattering the Elden Ring while at the same time Radagon is trying to mend it back. The dragon which is the Elden Beast has punished this Rebis for what it has done. That’s why we see Marika imprisoned and crucified in the Erd Tree. Ranni is a naughty girl. But she had her reasons too. (Mom). Perhaps Miquella and Malenia were punished as well for their mother’s crime?

Bloody brilliant. Fantastic job uncovering such great (potential) ideas, and excellent work on the editing too. Incidentally, how do you feel about Melina? I propose she was born at the same time as Miquella and Malenia (which would make them triplets) due to the Aeonian, Nascent, and Smoldering butterflies which, thanks to the revelation about stagnant vessels and how she claims to live "burned and bodiless", could imply she was born burning. You know, the line where Marika goes "Let us be shattered, both. Mine other self." I find really interesting, if one looks at the scenes of Marika and Radagon symbolically. Like Marika being a vessel for the Elden Ring, thinking about how she may have literally shattered herself (considering how she looks physicfally), and Radagon merges/"becomes" her in order to repair it. This doesn't really explain anything important really, but it was wiggling around in my brain when that line played, and then the line after about Marika literally being the vessel for the Elden Ring.

Thanks for spending the time to share in such depth! The whole mystery surrounding what makes someone an Empyrean was VERY frustrating for me! At this point, I'm beginning to question if FromSoft actually had a clear definition themselves 😅 I saw recently something that may give a different angle to the twins being Empyrean's - it's been pointed out that the Japanese text for Malenia's Remembrance might actually give quite a different meaning than the English translation: the phrase "唯一人の神" can apparently be translated as “the one and only god”, and not "born of a single god". Sadly, putting it in google translate puts it as the twins being "the only children of God", which is very unhelpful! So I sadly can't verify this myself... but it's given me some ideas, what do you think? Thanks again for your kind words, and best of luck with your Indie Game!
