@@BBQcheese I don’t know what it is about this game. I’ve played every other game and bosses almost always felt challenging while still engaging and fun. Except for some bad ones here and there. But apparently some people still live in denial that this is the case - there is no way in hell they balanced late game bosses for solo. No other souls game had so much BS with bosses, and I've played every single one + also Nioh, Nioh 2, Code Vein. Now speaking of Code Vein - it's the only game that does companions right - it doesn't ruin challenge, they're tied into the story, you can interact with your companions, you can play solo if you have balls ofc, but even with companions - the challenge in that game is very solid - plus they're very cool.

If you don't like Spirit Ashes, don't use them. My first playthrough, my Mimic Tear and I were best friends. Went everywhere together, we beat every boss together. My second playthrough, I soloed the whole game, including Malenia, Mohg, and Radagon. Both are valid ways to play the game.

a) Without them, the game has a lot of bullcrap design. With them, it becomes too easy. There's only two extremes with no middle ground that would strike a good balance like (most of) the previous games did. b) If it's part of the design, part of the game, then "just don't use it" isn't an excuse. It's not my job to "fix" the game for the devs, it's their job to design the game so it will be intuitively played in the most enjoyable way.

I disagree. Simply because most bosses in this game were designed with BS moves to punish not just the player, but the spirit ashes too

From my experience the answer to any aggressive boss is being aggressive back like you're the boss, when I started getting more aggressive bosses like hoarah loux maliketh (which I think is very misunderstood btw) and even malenia felt more natural I'd say and not as overtuned as I orginally thought which got me thinking, maybe this is the intended experience and we were playing the game wrong? Fromsoft is surely more into this playstyle ever since bloodborne I don't like using spirit ashes against the main bosses for that reason but they're useful to clear the trash mobs and reused bosses but I agree some of them are too strong

so why didn't you use some of the less powerful mid tier summons if the strong ashes are too good or whatever. Does using a +10 somber weapon early steal away from your enjoyment of the game? don't upgrade to +10 then. the game doesn't force you to go out of your way to pick up powerful summons. very few are obtained by just meandering around, and most don't survive five seconds against end game bosses either. I literally have no words for how you could possibly come up with this take unless you looked up "most broken summons" and then only used those. Try a playthrough with just the wolves or the jellyfish. please, for the love of god.

For the majority of the game, the difficulty is balanced enough that you never really need to use spirit ashes for any encounter, and you end up being too powerful for a lot of the fights regardless as it's not hard to overperform since this is an open world. Later though the difficulty jumps up so high, that you're doing yourself a disservice by not summoning spirits, because even at 50 vigour bosses start doing ungodly amounts of damage and their HP is turned up to 11, that soloing them isn't fun or challenging, but boring and unfair.

@@thatguybis1997 Yeah, post-Margott are horrible experiences. The sad thing is Elden Ring isn't the first game to do this. This issue started subtly creeping in from Dark Souls 3 bosses, where they were fairly balanced in the main game, but when the DLCs were released, Elfriede, Midir, the Demon Prince and to some extent Gael had insane damage output and bloated HP bars. Wasn't as bad as they made it in ER, but it was a fear I had all 5 years ago that they would keep this philosophy for future instalments.

Bosses being weak to bleed or poison or whatever... I don't even think that's particularly valuable. Why? Well, tell me... how do you know that? Is there any sort of clever tell for it incorporated into the boss design? Were you then able to adapt your tactics on the fly, playing smartly as you went? _No and no,_ because there's generally nothing to intuit what anything has a weakness to, and because such status and elemental things are tied to the build you make before actually entering the fight.

The main argument is 'just don't use them'. And you explain pretty well why this is not the only solution. Bosses are designed to use them. And in the end, even if they weren't, I would feel bad. You see, in hard games, you want to use everything you have to beat the boss. To limit yourself and knowing you could pull out your joker (spirit ashes) and beat the challenge in a heartbeat feels so bad. It is nice that they found a way to make people who don't play many games, being able to finish it. But seriously, just make a 'Story' mode and a 'Normal' mode. And reward the player in normal mode with special weapons, achievements whatever and take away the things that make the game too easy. Yes i get the current trend of people saying Souls games aren't hard and that it doesn't matter. For me it does. It is not the only part that makes the souls games so good. It is also the lore, the world, npcs, athmo, gameplay, but it is still a big part why I love them so much. No other game gave me the dopamine that souls games give me after being able to accomplish something.

My 2 cents - There's so many ashes, people can try out like A and B tier ashes. Everyone runs in with a maxed out mimic tear or tiche and then is upset that it's powerful. Take my boy Engvall for a spin, or one of the soldier groups. They'll help ease some of the later boss aggro without outright murdering them. I just fought the golden Godfrey yesterday (NG+) and used the Radahn soldiers. They got his attention a few times but they barely hurt him, that was all me. Then for Morgott I summoned the Jellyfish lol. It is tanky and harrasses enemies but no one is complaining that jelly solos bosses.

So Elden Ring introduces spirit summons and encourages players to use them to the point that there are 64 summons. Yet you pluck the strongest ones and use them has a basis for all of them. Thats the same has using the Rivers of blood Katana and saying that Elden rings weapons deal too much damage. You can't grab the objectivley strongest tools and use them as a metric for the rest of the game.

My biggest problem with the ashes in this game is that it's horribly balanced with them. But this is most evident with Godfrey. Fighting him solo with the build I was using was just too hard with how aggressive he is and how slow your recovery animation is when doing literally anything in ER. So after losing to Godfrey 7-8 times I decided to use mimic tear and absolutely shredded him in 2min. I was not happy with my victory but I would rather do that than suffer with the terrible solo combat

I remember when I got around to fighting Malenia, I was going to try and do it solo, being fully aware of the bullshit Waterfowl dance. I managed to beat phase 1 solo, but I kept dying to phase 2... Eventually, I just caved and decided to use the Mimic Tear and instantly beat her. It's very frustrating that the lategame bosses in Elden Ring demand the use of such tools to beat them and sets a dangerous precedent for bosses in future games, speaking as someone who wasn't a big fan of DS3's boss design to begin with...

I think, if anyone harbors doubts that these affect game design, then we can look towards an area in another game with a similar mechanic in mind: DS2. DS2's not a game I've played so this is stuff I've had relayed to me, but the infamous "co-op areas" speak for themselves. There's also that one boss, whose name I'm forgetting, whose main gimmick is "summoning," for lack of a better term, NPC help you can find around the map (who also stops hostile NPCs from spawning later on). In both cases, if you reject the help that the area's designed around, you're subjected to borderline unfair and unfun gank fights. It cannot be understated that the design philosophy of having multiple players is significantly different than just having one. Sekiro is a standout example of a solely single player title (it didn't even have messages at launch iirc), and it's praised by many (myself included) as the best work From has put out. I don't think it's a coincidence that ER is so contested in that souls players either love or hate it, while Sekiro is either loved by its' fans or is viewed apathetically from its' opposition.
@Ytinasniiable

I think the biggest problem with any argument against Spirit ashes is that usually relies entirely on the misconception that you know why everyone plays from software games, the accomplishment, and while thats true for a lot of players, there are plenty who want to experience the world design and background almost archaeology type storytelling that they're known for alongside punishing difficulty Providing entirely optional tools to make the game more accessible is for some reason seen as a bad thing, i think the best part of the souls games is that they all have ways to mitigate difficulty, some moreso than others, but everything can be cheesed by something, or you can fist only sl1 run your way through

Well I'm a guy that started playing Nioh and Nioh 2 then I decided to play FS games I started with demons souls remake then BB and sekiro. My take is that the more options (builds, weapons, ashes of war or weapon skills and spirit ashes) the game gives you the better as it feels like the game rewards you for the hours you put it in. What I did in ER is fight the boss solo and try to beat them and only use ashes if its a duo or if I struggle alot against a certain boss. Except for malenia I had to beat her on my own as a challenge and I managed to do that after so many deaths. Overall I feel the more options the game gives the better it is for the players as any player can play with self imposed rules that would make it more challenging and I think that's a thing for souls games as I see many people go on speedruns or level 1 runs. Thanks for the video!!

Elden Ring has been out for a long time by now. There are many things I don’t agree with first playtrough opinions now. I refuse to use ashes, but not because I want to challenge myself. I like to fight with Melee, and having an Ash messes with your dodge/dancing fights. Ashes make it hard to perfect a boss with melee… so in truth they are and Agro taker for Magicians to cast their strongest spells with long cast times. And now my main point, NG+7, ASHES ARE USELESS! Please, tell me how long you Black knife Tich lasted when she ate a Slam of Placidusax when the lord flew away. How many ground destructions of Hoarah Loux can any of the ashes survive? Did the Greatshield Squad survive the opening attack of the Elden Beast? Ashes suck, and any no Death NG+7 player knows that the game is about you dancing against the boss. And the boss aren’t as bad/aggressive as people claim. They do linger on the edge of too fast, but they can still be fought beautifully with the player’s kit. And to end the point about Ash survivability, I know and it’s basically the meta to use humanoid/NPC ashes like Dung Eater, Nepheli and Mimic. Purely because said attack I mentioned that delete the other ashes, for NPC ashes they will be knocked back rather than stunned/stance broken. So their survivability is longer… they take 2-3 hits instead of 1!

Not every spirit ash is on the level of mimic tear, like everything in this game, some are better than others. If the top tier ones are too good, use a weaker one. Spirit ashes range from a scale of "waste of FP" to "Im a pokemon trainer now" so find the balance that suits you. Whats the point of outright ignoring a game mechanic and complaining that the game expects you to use it? It feels like saying "Demon's Souls didnt have poise, so I refuse to upgrade it here. Back in the day i couldnt just power through attacks with a one handed weapon"

This sentiment that Elden Ring makes you rely on spirit ashes only applies with duo bosses which admittedly suck. Otherwise I can't name a single boss which feels like it was balanced with spirit ashes in mind and cannot be managed PROPERLY with your own given gameplay options. No openings you say? Maliketh's entire ass is open the entire fight. Bosses don't stop combos? Hit between attack not between combos. Even Greatswords/hammers/axes are fast enough to do so. Bosses do area wide attacks? POSITIONING. Hug Mohg to avoid his flaming piss and hug maliketh's fat booty to avoid the judgement cut. At this point it just feels like half are simply playing the game with the wrong mindset and are simply pointing at something else to avoid re-evaluating their approach. I do agree that the spirit ashes are not well implemented but the idea that Elden Ring bosses are build around it is straight up wrong imho.

I can think of several bosses that I feel can't be managed properly with only your own gameplay options. His entire ass? I'm not really sure what you mean here, being completely honest lol. Hitting between attacks sounds like a surefire way to get punished, I have no idea where you got that from. I can somewhat agree with the positioning call though, but sometimes you get hit and need to back off to heal, and if you do that, you're straight up dead. Bosses do feel built around them. Hence why my video about the end-game bosses within Elden Ring are filled with people exclaiming "why didn't you use Spirit Ashes!?" This is basically my answer to that question.

@@thatguybis1997 "Hitting between attacks sounds like a surefire way to get punished, I have no idea where you got that from." Morgott. Most of his usual attacks had enough time between them with my knight's gs. Godfrey as well. Mohg even more since he is slow as shit. Rykard you will probably know since he is your favorite. "I can somewhat agree with the positioning call though, but sometimes you get hit and need to back off to heal, and if you do that, you're straight up dead." Try to do it behind the bosses. Or make enough distance where you are sure that even if the boss input reads you can avoid it. Healing near the boss is a bad idea but then again mohg and Maliketh are usually generous with them not really attacking the players while positioned behind them. "His entire ass? I'm not really sure what you mean here, being completely honest lol." Absolutely no attack in his entire aresenal reaches his back. And luckily most actually push the player towards his furry butt. For example, judgement cut doesn't reach you if you manage to get to his back. This is way safer than trying to run away. In fact running away in that entire fight is a terrible idea since his range and closing speed is a lot and his back is a literal free damage zone. "Bosses do feel built around them. Hence why my video about the end-game bosses within Elden Ring are filled with people exclaiming "why didn't you use Spirit Ashes!?" This is basically my answer to that question." Ignore those comments. They won't be of any help. That's like asking someone to euthanize themselves after losing eyesight instead of helping them adapt with the new circumstances. And tbph, I don't think that they are built around them. Influenced? Maybe. But at least I don't notice anything aside from the suck-ass duo bosses. Even the large aoes can be avoided with positioning or in a lot of cases, simply jumping. And the increased aggression imo is just an influence from Sekiro. The constant keeping pressure on the boss and staying close to them at all times also feels more sekiro than anything else. While the game's combat admittedly isn't as good as sekiro's, Elden Ring still follows some basic principles set by sekiro. I usually find using things I've learnt from all the previous souls games and applying them at full force at the bosses being the most effective. DeS-Ds2's influence of positioning and spacial awareness. BB's being as aggressive and not staying idle for a single moment. Ds3's roll timing Sekiro's keeping pressure and using most of the boss's moves to inflict some form of damage. Granted the sekiro part isn't as fleshed out but it is present. Also all of them have to work in connundrum. You can't just rely on either positioning or roll timing to win: you have to use both. This is way more fun than spirits and also the most viable as well. Make a good duo boss in the dlc tho pls Michael Zaki. Anyways this is an end to my long comment. G'day to ya.

elden ring is my 1st from soft game and i love it and want to play other from soft games after, I think spirit ashes were put in the game specifically for new players, i try to beat bosses without them first but if the boss is bs i will use them, for instance Mohg his lifesteal is complete bs. Most bosses are balanced in my opinion but the duo battles are complete garbage, and the only way you can beat them is with ashes. TLDR: ahes should be used for bs bosses only, if possible (godskin duo)

On a complete surface level without watching the video dark souls as a whole or the soul series as a whole to be more accurate has a problem with how their bosses work in relation to multiple entities as they're trying to fight if there are multiple players it's always easier and spirits abuse quite easy and without having to get a friend to join in, Personally I feel like there should have been more variance for the spirits like there should have been tank spirits but with how they have it balanced almost every spirit is a tank Spirit except what black knife? Every good Spirit has a boatload of HP at max level they may not do a lot of damage unless you're using mimic tear(or Black knife) and some status building build but they can take a lot of hits so it allows you to do a lot of damage by abusing the fact that bosses really hate facing multiple people it's not really easy to do in the first place because if you make a spirit do too much damage then people are just going to find a way to make it kill all the bosses for them or you make everything tanky and you allow the player to win with a distraction, I know it's a lot more work but I really wish your bosses had extra moves in their moveset to deal with multiple people especially if you're facing a true warrior boss or an predatory animal of some kind because it doesn't make sense that a legendary warrior that hasn't lost their mind would only focus on one person when they're fighting upwards of six people depending on the summon.... It just extraneuates a problem in their boss design like they have never went the extra mile to make a boss capable of handling multiple people in a fun way with new moves and interactions but not a lot of game companies do that in the first place,, Personally I have no problem with the system it is a noob crutch because you can get a good summon however early in the game you want just with a quick guide which a lot of people play games with guides and then they can make your fights easier it just it is very hard to balance around which has always been their problem since they started in the first place multiple people always break fights
@lostnemesis
@lostnemesis 2 года назад
I had a thought that came to mind as soon as I saw Malenia I really wish they had a system to tone down input reading when you did not have a spirit summon or another player with you because split aggro really helps at the endgame but then you could have the system to turn it up because with her in particular and you can judge the range pretty well and especially by the time you get there you should have all the health potions you need and if you're over level like I was it's not super difficult but you get caught a lot because you heal and she instantly does a lunge or she instantly does a combo it's just difficult, I never used Finley kind of forgot and also by the time I got her I was basically hollow talking about how good she is 😂

Spirit ashes is the real easy mode in Elden Ring. Some can solo the bosses, some can attack while you are doing range attacks. I think the concept is cool but are broken. I think Rennala is the one that uses the summons well, they last 15-20 secons. The developers are aware that, for example, mimic teas is really broken xD. C'mon, is your character but with 1200% your health.
@AgentYellowWang
@AgentYellowWang Год назад
not broken concept at all, you would find that most boss will wipe them out easily before they got half hp and mimic teas is really hard to get to it's the equivalent of ds op weapon that you got early by go certain path but elden ring is hard to get like 10 time harder to get that op weapon and you to go to a geat length+ fight hard boss and it's like late game already at that point. But mimic tear does put other spirit to shame so it really specifically bad design ashes by ruining the other ashes purpose not much of the ashes systems.

Try rolling *into* and *against* attacks rather than away from them and avoid panic rolling like the plague, for example. And if you're finding you're killed in too few hits, swallow your pride and level Vigor. It gives you room to learn bosses faster and makes for a far more enjoyable experience.

i find that elden ring boss is good design if they not hard why would you use cool spirit that's like adding useless cool content that have no purpose. if you want no spirit run just do it but don't cry when it hard. Pretty sure spirit ashes doesn't make the fight too easy, the boss that easy to beat with sprit ashes is usually will be as easy to beat in other game too most souls game have boss that easy and elden ring have double the boss so it would make sense that some boss will be easy to beat with spirit. Boss in this game will always wipe the spirit out before half hp unless it's a mini boss who is just a big enemies. it all come down to ego at this point you have no skill but immediately set a limit to yourselves and instead of getting good you complain.

So much bs in this video.. You start the video explaining how difficult ER is and how few people actually beat it and then go over to "ashes solo the game for you". The Steam statistic you showed youself says somethimg else, tho. Ashes are not as overpowered as you claim, especially in the endgame. The only footage you could come up with to underline your narration was Tiche(Endgame Ashes) jumping around Malenia (we both know she didnt solo that fight) and your MimicTear (strongest summon in the game) against one of the earliest bosses in the game...wow.. There are easy weapon builds that outdamage any ashes. Bleed, frost, colossal weapons. There is so much you can use for an "easy mode". Yet people only do critique on ashes being "easy mode".. Also the bosses aren't designed around ashes. Everyone who did a solo playthrough with even a little skill can confirm that. Most people have that impression because they used ashes in their first playthrough, didnt learn the fight and then call it unfair when they try to solo it. And at the end. No one forces you to use them. Game is perfectly managable without them.
@thatguybis1997
@thatguybis1997 2 года назад
I don’t care that Tiche didn’t solo the fight. The point is, he took half her health bar BY HIMSELF, with the host not helping AT ALL. That alone is INSANE. Think about any tool in souls games that took half a health bar literally for free from the TOUGHEST BOSS IN THE GAME. I don’t care what you have to say in defense of that, because there’s really no excuse. So yeah, I’d say that’s pretty damning footage, as much as you wanna act like it’s not. This video also comes from someone who solo’d the entire game so…yeah. This comment ain’t it chief.

@@thatguybis1997 "I don’t care what you have to say in defense of that" Sounds like you already know you are in the wrong but just don't wanna admit it.. Not to mention that Solaire as a summon solos Gargoyles and O+S. - Ds2 had that spell (climax) which consumed souls for damage and you melted everything with it. Also Toxic mist was a very casual way to melt bosses. - Ds3 the answer again is spells. You can melt bosses with them quite easily. There is btw a tool in all of the souls games that deals huge amount of damage for free and is is called parry.

I mean you said at the beginning 18% completion on steam so I don't buy that the game is "too easy" with ashes for most players, especially with all the updates to balance out some of the ashes. Said this on another video you did but I don't think this game is broken at all. I think certain people just really want to solo this game with no ashes and they're either already really good from playing a ton of FromSoft games or they just get really f&*^ing good from trying to beat it without Ashes so it becomes "too easy" when they finally use them
