[Elder Scrolls 6] - MY biggest CONCERN!

Elder Scrolls 6, will it be good or bad? We have no Elder Scrolls 6 gameplay or release date. The only thing we have is a non revealing Elder Scrolls 6 trailer. My biggest concern with Elder Scrolls 6 is a design one. We look at Skyrim, Starfield, Oblivion, and Morrowind and you have to wonder what is Bethesda Game studios going to do with Elder Scrolls 6. Starfield seems to have divided the Elder Scrolls community more than any other Bethesda Game Studios game. #elderscrolls #skyrim #starfield #elderscrolls6 #elderscrollsoblivion #morrowind #bethesdagamestudios #rpg #videogames

One thing I'd love for TES6 is for the world to have a set amount of money, like merchants don't just refill their money every day, but the game AI makes NPCs trade with eachother, that way the value of the stuff you sell will be tied to how much they are needed. It could lead to interesting quests like destroying a bandit camp that has been raiding a town and then decide weather you want to hoard their loot or give it back to the people to make the town better, and if you decide to hoard all the money in the game, NPCs will go crazy trying to get food, like they might sell all the stuff in their house or steal, maybe shops even close down because no one has the money to buy what they sell 👀
@The-Game-Judge
@The-Game-Judge 7 месяцев назад
That is a very interesting idea! The only thing that might annoy people is finding places to sell your stuff. As long as that is convenient in combination with sufficient inventory space, then I don’t think this would be a bad idea to explore.

@@harrasika I'd ideally want cities 2x size of skyrim's cities maybe with 3x the population each. The problem I have with the scale of Skyrim's cities is how few people inhabit them. There are enough people walking around usually, especially counting guards but if you just had more residents, including many just chilling in their homes of farms and maybe going to the market that would be nice.

I think the next game can be bigger but it has to be bigger using the same scale as Skyrim. What I mean by that is, use the same 1 to 1 scale you used for Skyrim but give us a little bit more of tamriel. It's almost set in stone that we're getting Hammerfell right. So with that in mind, Hammerfell is a very similar size to Skyrim on the map. So give us a Hammerfell that is about the size of Skyrim (the game) but then also give us a little bit of the area up north, like the Orisinium area and then maybe one of the Summerset Isles. That way we'll have a total map that's like 25% bigger than Skyrim and has multiple biomes. You'll still have some snowy areas with orsinium, various different desert type biomes in hammerfell and maybe some aquatic areas with a small Summerset Isle. Then load up that world with more densely populated POIs compared to Skyrim. Maybe more, larger and more densely populated cities than Skyrim, more caves/dungeons, etc. One thing that Elder Scrolls does right that Starfield didn't is that everyone but Guards and enemies have their own names and schedules. In Starfield, 95% of people are just 'Citizen' or something like that. I get that the world and the cities are more ridiculously populated but that takes some of the experience out for me. I like that in Elder Scrolls you accidentally (or on purpose lol) kill Jim the apple salesman, there's no more Jim the apple salesman in town. His store or stall is now empty. Your actions have huge consequences. You do the same to like 30 'citizens' in a city in Starfield, there's no impact in the long run.

Melee combat mechanics should be identical to those in Dark Messiah, a game five years older than tes5. For replayability, getting the gameplay mechanics right is crucial. What I think could further replay even more for tes6- because size isnt that important-is armies and bandit factions coming in over the borders allying themselves with a jarl or other group to instigate civil wars and invading towns. Like the Outposts in FarCry4 but on a vaster scale.

I feel like they're using the 'size' of Starfield to kind of justify why a bunch of other design features regressed. But according to them, once they got one proc gen planet down, 1000 didn't matter cause the 'work was done'. So either making that one planet took 8 goddamn years, or they thought those bland planets were content enough. It think it's both. I still think all the cities should have been like 15-20% the size of Skyrim each - add back that sweet, sweet exploration. But even with that, the lore, story, characters are all so weak.

the thing with starfield is that even minecraft had more things to do. and that is game made by what? 5 people? surely with Microsoft money you can just take Minecraft (which is also owned by Microsoft), take all generative stuff, multiply details by 10 and make something truly unique. god dammit even Spore is ahead of it, was it really that hard to make flora and fauna generation? some societal generation maybe, like generative space-raider gangs or whatnot. it's not just a wasted opportinity, it felt like very low effort. maybe people at Bethesda are just burned out, idk...

I don't think the big problem with starfield is size. Everything but a few cities and stations are procedurally generated.They could literally add hundreds of more planets without adding too much more time if it is generated that way. They just needed to spend time on the actual cities. As some of the only hand crafted environments I expected all their attention to be on that. But even those are extremely underdeveloped. @@The-Game-Judge My point is that even in a "massive" game, mostly made by the computer generating it, they had every opportunity and reason to fill those cities. But they didn't. They treated the game like it was mincecraft. In reality, Minecraft actually has a bigger game world, more biomes, and a more interesting history to the game world. Even the similar insane speeches at the end make a little more sense in Minecraft. Actually, now that I think about it, Starfield may have the same main story as Minecraft. They are both about tracking down ancient ruins left behind by mysterious people, leading the main character to portals to other universes. It is just limited to a total of three universes in Minecraft. To be clear. I don't trust Bethesda because of Starfield. I DO NOT think they will focus on the cities of Skyrim. They had that opportunity in Starfield and refused. I think they will make an excuse to make the next game as empty as possible, no matter the size. Hell, maybe they will go full zombie apocalypse and only have a few normal people survive. That is what they did to Fallout. I feel like they are probably going to have one of the few survivors be another Preston Garvy and say they have infinite missions in the game. I honestly don't think making the game smaller would stop it. This has been the Bethesda's style since 2018.

2 years before Arena, in Ultima 7.. you could watch an NPC go the shelf, make the dough go to the oven, bake the bread, take it out of the oven. in 92! So yes, NPC detail can be had. And how did we get stuck on limited multiple choice options? Remember when you could literally just type anything at someone. I miss that. Its been a VERY long time since they allowed that. (granted they didn't always understand you and you had to say the right things, but I'm sure it'd be better now) Also, it'd be nice if you had a town that fell on hard times so the merchant's store is closed and you find him at the tavern and maybe if you can complete a few quests and get interest back into the town, his shop might open again. ..and then.. (and it is probably too early for this), we have AI.. and that will open up interactions one cannot even imagine. Game still needs to be pretty big. not the 15,000 locations of Daggerfall, but I have read no complaints about the size of any Elder Scrolls game so far. Concentrate on a really great story, well thought out characters, great subplots. More isn't better unless the story actually, for some reason, requires it. and try not to release a buggy mess that takes 2 more years to be playable.

A few years back I visited Monument Valley in southern Utah... incredible experience that I will never forget. However, one night the family decided to dine out at what looked like a pretty nice local restaurant. Great views of the valley and the monuments, but... when we got our food it was near inedible... nor was it inexpensive. Sure, there was plenty of food on our plates, tons of it in fact, but no one wanted to eat it. From what I've read, Starfield is like that restaurant. Lots of expensive food, but no one really wants to eat it. lol

One thing id like to note with skyrim (and personally i love daggerfall but they did the game and random generation as a whole a huge disservice) is that places like winterhold are completely unrealistic and barren, if anything id love for them to have bigger and more interesting cities where things like theives guild quests dont feel like such fetch quest hassles

Im not too worried about ES6 being oversized. Starfield was huge out of necessity, imo. Space is vast, so an open world space game needs to be huge to match. I agree 100% about the lack of radiant AI in Starfield being a step backwards. It made the cities feel soulless. How they didn't realize that Bethesda's handcrafted world design and procedural generation wouldn't mix is beyond me. lol

3:18 I disagree with you on this. Having tons of NPC will dilute quality and make so that we players get overwhelmed. You can't make a full city with interesting NPCs, and it will be very hard to find the interesting ones or keep track of them. In Skyrim, you could keep up with most of the interesting ones and had no need to talk with 1000 boring ones in between. I think it was close to the optimum number.
@The-Game-Judge
@The-Game-Judge Месяц назад
I see what you’re saying but, I disagree and I think this is a false dichotomy. I look at it as a scale of No NPCs to Max NPCS. I just want the slider to be more towards the max NPCs, while balancing quality. Baldurs Gate 3 did a great job with this. Not every NPC has to be interactive on a deep level, some can have 1 liners and then you can have more in depth NPCS mixed in there as well. All about balancing. On the flip side one could argue that not having enough NPCs makes the world feel less immersive, empty, and not as alive. Like in Skyrim when you battle in the Stormcloak vs Imperial civil war. When you take the city in the quest, in the battle you only have like 5 people with you. Not very believable or epic when taking over an entire city. It breaks immersion.

After playing heavily modded Skyrim for years, loading up Starfield felt like several steps backwards. My main problem was that I was used to playing with the best of the best modded NPCs in Skyrim like Inigo and Lucien. All of the Constellation companions felt like playing the game with Lydia, but with pretty lame side quests attached to them. ES6 needs to have like 10 "Inigo quality" NPCs scattered about the world. Starfields cookie cutter locations were also annoying... Every abandoned research laboratory is IDENTICAL to every other one, even down to placement of clutter items like coffee cups. At least while Skyrims Dwemer cities or drauger filled ruins were all using the same assets, the maps at least were all different. I will give a point to Starfield for using unimportant NPCs to make the cities feel alive and filled with people. It always felt like Whiterun had maybe 15 people and 2 cows living in it, which felt silly if you thought about it. 🤔

After seeing the shitshow starfield lost complete hope in Bethesda. You have to remember that Bethesda was technically going downhill after Morrowind they lost all their good writers and programmers. Then on top of this they cling to a very outdated game engine called The Creation engine the core coding is run from gamebyro which was cool back in 1997-2000. One of the biggest problems mod authors face and one reason why starfield was abandoned is there's no amount of scripting or mods to fix game engine limitations. But if you're looking for a Elder Scrolls fix there's a game called wayward realms the developers made Daggerfall and Morrowind they will make an RPG that Bethesda no longer can make.

But only god knows what is passing through their minds now ... I hope you're right. But I disagree on one point: I do believe that those kinds of games need to have empty places, with nothing to interact with (or just a little). This also gives the reality impression, as the real world has those types of places. I find the anguish and the anxiousness of "empty" and "nothing" very sensitive in the games because it builds more meaning to the places that actually have something ... it's a contrast effect. The "something" seems more meaningful when the "nothing" is around, somewhere. The dynamics of the liminal and empty spaces are very important, and I do think that our generation is forgetting that getting bored is a meaningful experience in a game ... and it is kind of healthy to get bored, otherwise, you'd turn into a junkhead in the game and spent all your hours and serotonin/dopamine inputs in your brain. Todd said this made him realize games need to be played for longer at this point. Which means he wants to just milk something for as long as possible. He also said they wanted to stretch their creative legs by not being the studio that does fallout, ES, Fallout, ES. I feel this is a lie because this happened shortly after Skyrims success and I think the real reason is what I mentioned above. I generally agree that if you *have* to choose one, quality should be prioritized over quantity - as with most things in life and business. I would argue, however, that you do not have to choose, at least not in reference to previous TES titles. You can have both an increase in size and complexity/quality from Skyrim with current generation hardware - even 2015 generation hardware - and a company Bethesda Game Studios’ size. The model they should be looking to emulate is scale of the Witcher 3 but with the dispersed regions consolidated into a single map. If Novigrad was possible for CDPR a decade ago then an equivalently large and vibrant capital city of wherever province of Tamriel TES VI will be located in should be easily possible, with other cities somewhere between that size and Oxenfurt and towns/villages the size of the “cities” in Skyrim. In my opinion, one reason Skyrim “got away” with being a smaller map with smaller cities than Oblivion is because Skyrim is more of a backwater province compared to Cyrodil, otherwise a capital city (Solitude) with just *one* main road is so quaint it would border on ridiculous. Additionally, while they have typically included “island” expansions as one of their DLC since Morrowind, another way to make TES VI bigger without sacrificing quality would be to focus on new regions - even entire provinces - utilizing the same engine etc for all/most of their DLC, somewhat like ESO has been doing except in this case it would be real Elder Scrolls rather than an MMO mock-up of it. For example, if Hammerfell is the province for the new title, then perhaps the first DLC could be adding the Reach with a “return to Skyrim” theme, the second a couple years later would be all of High Rock, and so on. That’s also how they could *really* get the longevity they want out of one engine/base game - as opposed to Starfield’s mostly pointless new game +. Frankly if they had managed to add a province or maybe two ti Skyrim since 2011 I don’t think they would get nearly the same kind of backlash they do now for the constant re-re-re-re-releases of it.

Morrowind is small, but more packed than Skyrim with all unique NPCs, hidden items and pieces of lore everywhere, and things to do around every corner .. A more modern (but a bit different) example of a game that is kinda small but loaded with stuff is Elden ring... There is not an inch of that games map I wasn't drawn to explore and find the mystery of. Even RDR2 with a huge map was able to give that same want for exploration that Bethesda games have forgotten. Having a world that revolves around you rather than a world you exist in is one example of what's wrong with Bethesda games... Another I think is the resource system... Why would I want to clear a dungeon if all I will get is randomly generated crafting items I probably will never use or need? Or try to defeat a boss only for the legendary weapon I Get is like a randomly generated Pipe Pistol with a legendary effect...

Respectfully, hard disagree. Instead of trying to hand craft everything, ES6 should absolutely iterate on what they did with Starfield, making something akin to Daggerfall, but with modern design elements making it feel like a living and breathing world. To be frank, they're not as good at characterization as they are at immersing the player in a "lived in" feeling world. There's a reason that the Daggerfall community is still going strong, second only to the Skyrim community. Every Elder Scrolls game after Daggerfall "feels" small, like little toy boxes. Hills dressed up like mountains. Tales of epic adventures with days of travel that takes the character literally 45 seconds. The "biggest graveyard in Skyrim" has less than a dozen graves. It's hard to take anything seriously in the game when the "game" elements are so in your face all the time. All that said, you don't need to literally create an entire continent in order for a game to "feel" big. Fallout 1 "feels" massive because of the overworld travel system. Pathfinder: Kingmaker and its sequel "feel" like full kingdoms since it takes your characters huge chunks of time to get around the map and you have to prep and budget your time appropriately. It helps that, just like in Daggerfall, both of those games "care" about the time you spend, with events coming to their natural conclusion if the player just runs off to do other things. IMO, there should be a good mix of both. Hand craft the main quest. Hand craft the guilds. And if you don't want to procedurally generate entire continents, make a fast travel system that isn't free, takes in game time, shifts the seasons, and procedurally generates chunks of terrain for the player to spawn into when they encounter things along their plotted routes. If any IP deserves the "simulated world" treatment, it's The Elder Scrolls. Daggerfall was ahead of its time. It's a damn shame that there are zero modern games on the market that even come close to attempting that scope.

I always wonder why, after Morrowind, did Bethesda feel the need to render entire countries for a game world? The scale is never going to match and you miss out on being able to flesh out mere regions. Just look at how Skyrim is as a country…..it’s tiny and yet nobody lives anywhere but the cities. Villages are all of 3 homes and maybe a mill or mine. Cities are smaller than oblivion cities. It’s crazy how the scale can’t even bother with the illusion of scale. Even Oblivion tried harder

You make some good points! One of my biggest complaints about Skyrim is the world is big but, still felt kind of empty. Like the towns were small and any type of big battle you had would be with such a small amount of people that it never fully reached the potential of epic.

I have a similar concern but more in terms of lore. When Skyrim was made enormous cities were turned into barely villages or wiped off the map completely. So of course I want the games to have bigger maps but its very important for those maps to cover a smaller overall area. Ex: In Skyrim instead of all of Skyrim, doing just Falkreath and Whiterun but on a bigger map than Skyrim had.

The Elder Scrolls 6 will be like ESO. ESO has unique content featuring most of Tamriel and has an area 10 times the size of Skyrim. Tod Howards issue with Starfield was that he wanted to provide enough content to last you 10 years until the next game came out and so he had too much autogenerated content. What I would prefer is for Elder Scrolls 6 to be initially four times the size of Skyrim and then for a far harbour sized DLC to be added every year until the next game comes out.

I totally agree and would add they should think about the lessons of BG3 and not be afraid to shut content of based on your decisions. Yes it means that people can't see and do everything in one play through. But that would make it more repayable. People will want to do multiple play throughs if they make the world consequential.
@The-Game-Judge

That would be awesome to see. ES6 with a consequential world makes for an interesting one. Also looking to the failures of Starfield and learning from that. They still have a chance with ES6.

I think it will be bigger than Skyrim. I think it will have endless DLCs like ESO. But, I think Every NPC will have something unique. They will all have some kind of involvement with quests, or some unique dialogue specific to the character. Itll be good, really good, but will have one major shortcoming that people notice right away. Later fixed by patches and stuff, but the reputation will have taken over by then like 76

@@The-Game-Judge Well, the industry has changed. Fan made mods are a wide distributed network that can generate product faster and more efficiently than a AAA studio. The labor is often free and the content is open to fan feedback as it's written. It's almost like we are at the point of a big studio creating a Brand/Franchise as a workable skeleton and the fanbase does the rest of the expansion. Lore/gameplay/assets/and mechanics. I'm not sure how or if the Big Studio can capitalize unless everything is tokenized and games become subscriptions. And from what I know of crypto, we don't have the interwebs and electric capacity and infrastructure to do that with a CBDC let alone ALL the assets in a game. Are we at the end model of AAA gaming???

This is a big question within the community. Some people think it’s not the engine itself but, how they utilize it or upgrade the engine. Based off what I seen, I lean towards needing a new engine.
@VonDutchNL
@VonDutchNL 7 месяцев назад
@The-Game-Judge I think the Egine was already outdated with Fallout 4, that's why Bethesda is always so buggy. I don't think the utilisation is a problem, unless Bethesda has very undereducated staff. The Creation engine is one of the easiest engines to develop with.. it's basically the same engine since 2001.
@The-Game-Judge
@The-Game-Judge 7 месяцев назад
Good points, the bugginess of their games has always been an issue. Some have said it’s the Bethesda staff. I kind of like how CD Projekt Red is doing it for Witcher 4, outsourcing with Unreal Engine 5 from Epic games. Allows them to focus on other things. Maybe Bethesda should consider that.

@@The-Game-Judge but what are you talking about, the game is Elder Scrols 6, the production post has been published, the core of the game cannot be changed, so it is already worn out, and the game is on an old engine, people will see the same as in starfiled.

I don’t think you have to make the map small, but you need to have a ton of content in places. But I think some procedurally generated areas without a lot of stuff to separate areas can give a better sense of immersion when traveling. Not talking about lots of empty land all over, but a handful of spots like that, with some hidden camps and mines ect

Quick answer: CHANGE THE ENGINE ! it's outdated as hell, they have used it since Oblivion Yes it allows a ridiculously high amount of props to be present on the map with little to no loss in performance which is obviously valuable in an RPG because it makes the world really interactive Yes it "just works" But that engine is full of bugs and seriously, I don't want to play the same game anymore since 2006 unreal is not perfect, but it's really good at doing almost anything, or simply making a new engine, a papyrus 2.0 for example, which will have the same purpose but adapted to newer machines, our nowadays computer have way enough resources to have a huge AND interactive map, if it was possible in 1996, it will only be better now. please Bethesda, change the engine

@The-Game-Judge
@The-Game-Judge 6 месяцев назад
I actually agree and disagree with you. When I’m talking about size, I’m talking about the actually size of the land/maps. That’s why in the video I said the epic battle with only 5 guards didn’t feel “epic”. I also mentioned a world the size of Skyrim but, more filled in. I’d rather have a world Skyrims size full of more buildings, more NPCS, etc… rather than a world the size of Starfield but, empty. Former Devs of Bethesda have alluded to Starfield needing to be smaller. That is what I’m referring too with ES6. I want a world filled in. A world big and empty like Starfield breaks immersion. Todd’s focus was on size and I don’t want that to be the big focus with ES6. Again, size meaning the size of the world, not the density of it.

I'd like to think that todd has been prepping for the next game of the series for quite some time now. I just don't see how he wouldn't have allocated ANY of his or the story writers time to developing at least a framework of the map and storyline. I think Bethesda's recent titles should teach them a lesson on what to do and what not to do with the ES6, so hopefully they nail it.
