Eleanor is my favorite 1st Lady ! Her sexuality was her private life which we all deserve. The progressive work she did for our country was major ! Eleanor was an outstanding, well rounded human being with human problems that we all encounter over a lifetime. Eleanor's high intelligence and perception of reality and current issues helped progress our country forward. thanks for the video.

Exactly! Her sexuality, whatever it was, was her business. The travesty is that her family members did not appreciate her the way they should have. Almost all of them took her for granted.

I'm loving this. Eleanor is one of my favorite First Ladies, and all this is part of why. I can't wait to see future episodes of this. Queer history is not covered anywhere near often enough (I say this as someone with a degree in history), so thank you for doing this series.

Thank you so much for your comment 😍 I teach history and the purposeful erasure of queer history is wild. But it is damn time to change that.

If the rough patch was like the show then what went on was that hick felt neglected and that she wanted more time with Eleanor. Hick felt as though she only had time for politics and wanted more of a life with her

Thanks for making this video! It was really interesting to learn that Eleanor may not have been straight, and this is the first time I've seen so many excerpts from Eleanor's letters, which is really refreshing. It's rare that we actually get to hear potentially queer historical figures speak about their feelings and relationships in their own voice.

Since we are on Eleanor, has any one else heard the story about when she was visiting troops over-seas, a bet was made to a soldier that he would not pat her on her bottom. He won the bet, but I don't know whatever happened to him after the MP's dragged him off.

I am happy that somebody has reported on Eleanor Roosevelt I don't think it is a blemish on her record that she was bisexual but I do feel like if she didn't have love at home I'm so happy that she found it somewhere else it also appears to me that from the letters that she was genuinely happy. I'll always remember Eleanor Roosevelt as one of the greatest first ladies till to this day. I believe her to be a very remarkable woman. Truly ahead of her time and would have made a great president especially present day

Hate the way bi folk are portrayed, we seem to be labelled as bed hoppers every 5 minutes. Perish the thought, we are both bi but it doesn't mean to say we are at it all the time with both sexes! My preferences arise from time to time, been that way having lady crushes since late 70s to now. I think a lot of people are, a majority in denial, but that's how some of us are. Enjoy your experiences, no one should be made to feel ashamed of sexuality. Above all stay safe and have safe sex. There are risks in every part of life. Your body...your life...your choices matter...

I'm reading her autobiography right now. She doesn't have much to say about Hick. Other biographers have noted she had 4 emotionally strong relationships after she stopped sleeping with her husband -- 3 men, and Hick. I still think the driving force in her life was the will to do something meaningful with her life. No relationship came between her and her work.

Edgar J Hoover hated her. He use to do 'friends' gathering in a kind of iunderground lounge in his house. Of course wit Clyde Tolson his lover and shadow. Hanging on the wall were offensive illustrations of Eleanor Roosevelt hintinh sexual mischiefs. This appear in the more conservatiove biographies of Edgar J

She was terribly hurt by her husband FDR. Her heart was broken. She desperately want to love, feel loved and be lived. FDR apparently turned her world upside down. I don’t believe she would have been in the relationship with huck.

I don't like the word "queer" at all. It sounds very demeaning to me and back in the day (80's & 90's) it sure was. I'm not sure how it's come about being accepted by some people today. Just my opinion, but interesting content! I love, love, love history! Keep up the great work!

Queer is a word I think gives the LGBTQ population power. The word comes with a history, and I think that history is very important to acknowledge. Thank you for sharing :) I encourage you to check this out: www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/is-queer-ok-to-say-heres-why-we-use-it

As a younger person, I can tell you that for the most part we have reclaimed the word, so for most of us, it is no longer a slur but a descriptive term. However, you're more than welcome not to use it if you don't feel comfortable doing so. I understand there's a lot more pain associated with the word for the older generation.

She had many relationships with men too so yeah agree bi. Saying she was gay is bi phobic….. My own personal view is that being bi sexual can be someone who has many relationships with both men & woman or it can be someone who has just had a few experiences or crushes on women but who much more often is sexually attracted to men! Which is ME 🎉 Eleanor was not gay because predominantly her sexual relationships were with men with just a few exceptions. She was bi sexual. I think anyway….
