Good Idea on the Flux! I did something very similar with adding new solder (with rosin core in it) to help with that. I've run into lifted pads and traces on the Commodore 64s I've repaired, they are pretty notorious for that. Thanks!

It is very hard to turn "left" to go "up" - sometimes it's a software fix, sometimes you're just stuck with it.

@@KeepEvery1Guessing effective... but not elegant - unless you're stuck in the field, then GENIUS!

@@temporarilyoffline Given that there are 3 other pins, and two actual mounting ears holding the encoder in place, and it doesn't involve modifying the PCB, it's not a terrible answer. On the other hand, I'd like to see the PCB designers include a 4 pad quad that you can short either across or up and down, to perform the swap, with the usual cut-able mini traces selecting the default direction. Of course, most designs have been sent to the PCB house before they realize that not all encoders are the same. (Who, me, standardize?) A NVRAM setting, as for left handed paddle, implemented in a firmware update seems the best after release fix, but Elecraft probably has no trouble sourcing the right encoder, so I wouldn't expect such an update from them.

@KeepEvery1Guessing and that's why I ordered the part from elecraft! I hate that there are so many incompatible parts - that still fit.

I have patience! Just need to set all the searchlings off and wait for one to come back!

@@temporarilyoffline I picked a brand new in box with unopened plastic packets with receipt from 07/2005 - on ebay - not cheap - original invoice was for $476.30 - its on my list of kits to build and document this year - rocking horse dung comes to mind

@@mattghoward sounds like a fun project - I know after I get mine it will still take some time to clear the schedule to build it and then even more to get it tuned for maximum power output.
