Here is the first part of what everyone has been looking for for quite awhile, Election Night 1976!
A lot has changed from 1972: Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner are still at the anchor's desk, but are joined by Barbara Walters, who is not only the first female evening news anchorperson, but also the first woman to anchor election night coverage. She is not the first woman to be the sole anchor though, Katie Couric was in 2008. So we have some history here on the anchor side, as well as the actual race, which is one of the closest in history.
The Reasoner./Walters pair is known for their awkwardness, and the coverage does not fail to deliver this as there is several moments throughout the night that Harry and even Howard have a WTF look on their face when Walters says something out of left field.
Frank Reynolds is off the campaign trail, instead he is in charge of the senate calls, joining him with the Governor and House calls are Anne Compton and Don Farmer. Tom Jarell is still the white house correspondent, joined on the other side by Sam Donaldson, who was the fill in break anchor from 1972, Steve Bell took his spot, and filled it again in 1980.
I have two dvd sets of the coverage: One with better quality and no commercials, and another one with commercials, but it is missing three hours of coverage. I will upload different ones through the cycle. I hope you all enjoy the coverage and stay tuned I will have to put up quite a lot of clips!
