Electric Car Journeys Are Easy With Common Sense Added!

After watching various media put up videos of how long EV journeys are a disaster (who don't engineer these videos at all!), I though I'd do one in a small range EV that can't rapid charge at all to prove that the charging part of it, isn't that hard.

Just to clarify some people’s questions. Car got just over 4.4 mpkWh and yes I left with near 100%. It cost about £25 for the journey back. The only reason I did it was because I’d just bought the car and had to get it back home somehow. As said in the video, this isn’t a car designed for long journeys. It’s essentially one of the first EVs ever sold. In my Tesla, I could do this without stopping, this journey is clearly not indicative of a modern EV.

As you can see in the comments, common sense is not so common these days. So many comment that they could do the same journey with their ICE car without a stop to refuel. I can bet that all these will stop after an hour of driving, moaning that their back.. toilet.... coffee... a snack... i drive lorries for 8-10 hours every night, my son (26 yo) said a few years ago that it's easy. Next holidays I told him to drive for 2,5 hours. After 1,5 hours he asked me to drive!!!!

I guess you're right, it is probably all click bait. That video has had over 250k views. There are a lot of people out there who like to have their egos stroked, about how clever they've been buying a definitely greener petrol engined car. So watch it to feel vindicated in their choice! I suppose when your car is in negative equity, then you have to do something to bring the coppers into your account!

@Martyntd5
@Martyntd5 Год назад
Can I ask how long it took you to do the journey? You see it's about how long it takes isnt it? The one number that you didnt mention. Time. A 250 mile journey in an ICE should take 4 ish hours, depending on traffic and road choices. Half a day, tops. I'm betting it took you a long day, right? Be honest? Here's the thing though, if you drive somewhere, you usually have to drive back. Because you started with a full battery, you only had to stop 3 times, but probably ended with an almost totally depleted battery. You've then got quite a long charge to get it back to 100% before you could start your return journey. So basically if you were to drive somewhere 250 miles away, it would take you a long day, then an overnight stop before another long day home. A journey you could complete on one tank of fuel in one day with a diesel car. As you have said, that car is not suitable for high mileage use. It's impractical. The question then becomes, is an EV the right vehicle to buy for low mileage local use? From a practical point of view, sure. It works. But is it good for the environment considering it cost an extra 10 tons of CO2 to make over and above an ICE vehicle? You could buy a petrol engine Fiat 500 and do 60,000 miles in it, before it's harmed the environment as much as your Zoe before it even left the factory. If you're only doing 3000 miles a year in your local runabout, then you could drive the Fiat 500 for 20 years before it's made as much CO2 as your Zoe. We need to start being honest about this and crunching the numbers on a case use basis. If we dont, then we are sacrificing the planet on the altar of politics and that's unforgivable.

@@Martyntd5 your completely missing the point and have ignored everything said. Just because you’ve wrote a war and peace amount of text doesn’t mean you’re right. I’ll try caps. THAT IS THE ONLY LONG DISTANCE JOURNEY THAT CAR WILL MAKE! For that one day it was easier and cheaper to drive it home (even though it would take longer) was cheaper and more convenient than having it delivered. Your so called facts and figures are way off so don’t even bother pulling numbers out of thin air. It is well known and accepted at this point that an EV DOES have a larger carbon debt from manufacturing. It’s closer to about 2 years to even out though. This car is 10 years old. It hit that level out point years ago, even when the grid was dirtier than it is today.

I have been on EV’s since 2019 and quite frankly fed up with the constant range comments from non EV users and their statements simply do not stand any test. I am on my second EV and it was purchased on the premise that I wanted to be able to travel from home to my holiday lodge and return home without the need to public charge and this it does this quite easily. Now if I do an extended drive like last week from Aberdeen to Norwich that will involve recharging at some point. Now I know that I can’t physically drive without a break ( comfort/ meal, coffee) to the limit of my cars range, therefore the car has to go by my physical comfort range which means it will be recharging at between 30/40% sometimes even more, would I do the journey any differently if I still had my diesel car, well no I wouldn’t. So effectively if I still had my diesel car I would have carried the weight of that extra diesel for no reason at all because like most people out there you simply are not going to drive 600+ mls without stopping..

This supports my opinion (and Andy Palmer's) that smaller batteries would suit most of the blue collar (and many white collar) workers of the UK who seldom drive more than 100 miles in a single journey and wouldn't be inconvenienced greatly given that longer journeys would be very infrequent as long as the charging infrastructure and reliability increases..

Absolutely. I got a long range Model 3 but after a while I realized that it's definitely not a great deal to exchange a few months of work with a few charging stops on weekend trips. One thing I found irritating (as a German tourist in the UK) is how many of the AC chargers are only single phase. These don't help much when you're doing a daytrip and want to use AC destination charging. Over here I think it's more than 95% 3 phase chargers with most of them now being 22 kW. So with the 11 kW charging every Car offers, that's perfekt to arrive empty, have a nice couple of hours at the museum/shopping mall/whatever you like and then start your journey home with a full battery.

We did a road trip in the Highlands last year and the worst inconvenience we had was a five minute walk in each direction when I left the car on a slow charger in the evening after a day out. In general the provision of slow chargers at regular intervals and best places we wanted to visit worked really well. It did take a bit of forethought (common sense?) and you have to change your mindset from ICE - yes, the car takes hours to charge, but by planning you let it do that when it would be parked anyway. Even if (when 🤞) rapid chargers are sufficiently widespread, that's a better way to do it anyway. This year's trip was to Cornwall and the provision isn't as good - but planning and common sense meant that we weren't restricted in the trips we went on and we didn't wait for the car to charge.

Point is, I never left for a road trip with no fuel in the car, I never drove past loads of other petrol stations until the very last moment, and then whined about how pricey the fuel costs were when in the middle of nowhere, or in the motorway services...because I'm not dumb enough to get myself into that situation. And this constant nonsense about how EVs destroy the roads... yes, at about the same rate as the current crop of petrol and diesel vehicles do. Unless you're buying everyone a 2 tonne replacement for their current Aygo? Compare the 2020 Golf estate to the new MG5 (which is effectively an earlier model Golf) and the weight differential is just over 100kg, less if you go with an auto box. Fill it with fuel and you're at the same weight. So how much extra wear and tear are they putting on the road in reality?

I just had my vacation from Utrecht, Netherlands to Venice, Italy > Berlin, Germany and back to Utrecht with a Citroën ë-C4. With just a little bit of planning, common sense and my wife and I both alternately driving, it was really a breeze. Austria (Innsbruck) was a bit of a challenge: Charging points were there but not very many and most of them were already in use. We eventually found one available though and it was not really a problem because the battery was never 'that empty' anyway. Every stop for coffee, rest, lunch or toilet was done at a place where we could also charge the car. That's it! That was the only planning/consideration! All fine. Went through Europe comfortably. Highly recommended.

I didn't need an alternative on the first charge - just sat and ate breakfast. My second charge was full and had a queue so drove on 6 miles down the road where there were more chargers and no queue - just as I'd planned. My car charged to 80% in less than 15 minutes and I had to go move it before my food had even finished cooking at BK. Then went straight to my destination. No hassle, no stress, no problem. Nice video. One thing I'm wondering about is (and forgive me if this already exists) is whether you let an app plan the charging stops for you based on desired %'s, or at least calculate what % you are at each stop. Sort of like an optimised route for charging vs. distance, where first charge maybe longer but is enough to ensure you're at 30% at the next one and so on

What I find funny is that they'd have the most clickbait title, talking about risking his life or whatever, but then you watch the video and literally nothing bad happen except than having to sleep in the car because no hotel planning was made. Nothing to do with an EV. That said, I've been planning a trip on my MG4 from the south of France to Darlington, and looking at the map, the charging infrastructure seems to be a bit behind over there. I'm sure I'll be fine, but I'll make sure I follow your mantra of "Charging when you can, not when you have to" once I'm in England. France is pretty much fine in that regard, I can follow blindly the first plan ABRP give me and I'll be confident I'll have no real issue with the chargers.

You are French so I will let you off. But in that video when he was at Spean Bridge where he stopped and went into that Fish and Chip Shop. He could have turned right towards the Isle of Skye, or left towards Fort William. Fort William from there is about a 15 minute drive. Its a big place, shops, hotels, bars, restaurants, I know there are Tesla chargers there so surely there are normal chargers. Instead he turned right towards the Isle of Skye, over a 2 hour drive and there is nothing along that road other than a couple of hotels (I think he stopped at these and tried to get a room) then you are just in the country side with nothing around. Its no wonder he had to sleep in his car. But really I think this was his plan all along he needed to be on Skye early and didnt want the 2+hour drive in the morning from Fort William.

Sometimes apps in a different country are a pain with what debit cards they'll accept / French apps might not work / UK apps not necessarily downloadable on french phones. Might be worth checking. I wouldn't want to make your trip in my Leaf (max 6.6 kW AC charging) if I had to rely on type 2 chargers but with rapid charging it was (almost) a joy. Sensum Communem or 'Common Sense' has recently been placed on the critically endangered list by a number of organisations around the world. Although once the main survival trait of human beings, allowing them to survive, learn, and prosper throughout this planet, it started to reduce in numbers as technology advanced. Those possessing common sense wouldn't place body parts into close proximity of dangerous animals, or into machinery or fire etc. Although the lack of common sense was mostly disadvantageous, there were exceptions, insofar as the revolutionary inventors who risked all to create early versions of what we see now, such as many of our transport modes, now with many of the dangerous bits mostly hidden away from inquisitive minds. This unfortunate decline was more recently observed in the inability of certain highly educated students to utilise basic things such as crossing roads safely, thus needing increasing assistance insofar as zebra crossings. These too were often found to be too reliant on operator observations, so in one particular case that I have encountered, it was replaced with a push button crossing, as this was thought to be simple enough for those devoid of the aforementioned 'Common Sense' to operate and use in a relatively safe and satisfactory manner (Durham City, New Elvet crossing replacement circa 2005). Sensum Communeum has been on a steady decline since around the 1980s, but this has accelerated in more recent years with the arrival of online social sharing platforms, allowing "alternative truths" to garner favour with the once old style media channels such as newspapers and television, that were once respected sources of information as the percentage of those afflicted with this deficit became prevalent throughout the industry. It has also led to a marked increase in the need for signage for every possible eventually that could cause harm or distress to them. Thus we arrive at the current time where this species, common sense, is on the point of critical endangerment and se must do everything that we can to ensure not only its continued survival, but an active conservation and expansion to the general population along with its reintroduction into society especially modern media. (No sarcasm here, honest... 🤔🤣)

He'll be on intelligent octopus given the Tesla, so it will be 7.5p x 22kwh = £1.65 On GO it would be £2.09 with no smart tariff / price cap £6.60 to fill battery once - Edit just realised you're asking re whole journey ; if he was using gridserve chargers 260 miles would be about 3 batteries worth of energy and if all on gridserve prices £45, but if gets home on empty after two charges petrol at 50mpg would be £34 so not favourable. But doing your annual commute of 10,000 miles a year on home charging would be £237 EV (assuming 9.5p off peak rate and 4m/kwh - it probably does a lot better than this for slow local commutes). Petrol at 50mpg and £1.46/L would be £1314. So you'd save over a grand a year on fuel. but yes - it isnt a great battery to be doing this long journey on. And to save money you do need a home charger. Edit 2 : I forgot gridserve AC chargers are cheaper they are 49p not 69p. so £32 if all energy needed from gridserve chargers. I'm sure Andys £25 is right, if he got better efficiency and therefore needed less kwh.
